I can’t believe I haven’t heard this before. Trippy!
there are actually 4 known versions now...with the latest 2011 reissue of Sunshine Superman, we get to hear an alternate and longer version of this, which is the very first version, an absolute stormer recorded in April 1966.
It was done again in November 1966 according to the info on the 2005 reissue of Mellow Yellow, another cool version...then we have the one released only in 1969 on Barabajagal. and yeah, lyrics certainly played a part for this not being released...
This legend still impresses me, very underated. Let your children listen to this man.
Terry Reids version kills it!!
One of his best!!!!!! Driving bass is magic....
Thank you dear Lama ;) Love this version, with dedication to all beings.. tashi delek..
love this version! cheers for posting!
Thanks for sharing. It answers a lot of questions I had about this song!
@doglips1958,
This is the first version from the Sunshine Superman sessions that first appeared on the Troubador 2 CD collection from 20 years ago now, man...time flies! On the latest deluxe reissue of Superman you'll find an alternate longer version as well. A third version was recorded and found as bonus tracks on the most recent Mellow Yellow reissue.
The song however never appeared officially until 1969, in its fourth version (rec 1968), on the 'Barabajagal' LP.
That's where I first heard it too! Oh Donovan, this is a amazing recording/song, could the girl been older though? This might have been written when he was still a teen himself. He was very young when he made it big!
Wow! Cool. Thanks for posting!
this is my fave version, the bass and the organ drive it along
hadn't heard this version. dig it.
laid way back in my wayback machine, ready for vaping
Wasn’t banned. Just unreleased until much later.
8 people don't like this?...are they deaf...Lol...it's real good
that's great! Hilarious, really. makes my lungs hurt just remembering those days.
"Sorry, you can't say 'get high' on a record. Drooling over a 14-year-old girl? No problem!"
only 14? Jesus...
yes,yes I luv this superlung's song ,,,, ;)
I like this version :-)
Check out Alien Crime Syndicate version of this.
So basically, they changed the words because it was too drug influenced and the version they ended up with makes Donovan come across as a nonce. Should have just left it like this.
Donovan leitch. Would please release the album 'love is only feeling' on cd!!! Thank you.
i don' t why people are saying Terry Reid 's version is better, its almost a completely different song than this one.
This isnt rare
or banned
it was just an outtake from an album that was re-recorded for a different album
I thought it was banned by the record label, and that Donovan intended it as a single.
Seeing as when he finally released it on the Barabajagal LP he changed the lyrics to 'Supergirl' and 'painting sky with her classmates in school', it was probably being blocked by the record lables because of the references to drug use. It was a very conservative time and nobody had written songs like this before
@@sonoflung 'she knows how to draw' was taken as reference to oral sex, giving point to the 'superlungs' title.
@@rays3398 not at all... 'draw' is in reference to "taking a drag" or "drawing" off a spliff, which is where 'Superlungs' fits in.
@@sonoflung this was 1969. It wasn't a "conservative time" and there had been a lot lot lot of risque and drug related songs before this... like The Doors' "Light My Fire".
As I recall from ,any years ago Donovan wrote this for Terry Reid.
I might be the only one 1998-born peep listening to this.
Ima kms
'96 is the best year. It can be translated into '69 when you flip it over, under, sideways, down.
Man I wasn’t even born in the 20th century. It’s not that unique my dude. Plenty of people listen to Donovan
Yes , it is the same song. Donovan wrote it but Terry's version is much better in my opinion..they were friends and shared the same record producer, Mickie Most. Terry also does a version of Donovan's "Season of the Witch"
Astronomy domine intro!
Is there any connection with a certain Terry Reid, who had a whole album of this name?
Was it banned because of the connotations to smoking pot, can anyone verify that, thx and cheers in advance, love from 🇦🇺👍
like the barabajagal version much better
I had never even heard of Terry Reid before. Having listened to his version, I definitely consider Donovan's version to be nearly infinitely better.
This needs a matching video of super lunged females to match its lyrics
Doesn't sound like Donovan, actually.
Anyone who was into rock music at the time thought that Donovan Leech was a talentless poseur; no reason to re-evaluate that. This has no comparison with Terry Reid's rip into it - which stands up today as well as the time it was released.
Donovan is sick and this song is grotesque.
Donovan leitch. Would please release the album 'love is only feeling' on cd!!! Thank you.
That would be ok of course....nice album but spectacular at all. Why do you crave that one ?
This version is lightyears better than the one on the Original album....with the organ solo and the terrific outtro.
yes!
you are not wrong
