UK faces bus driver shortage
Vložit
- čas přidán 23. 10. 2021
- A shortage of bus drivers in the UK is being caused by better pay being offered to drive HGVs, according to a union.
It's thought there are more than 4,000 vacancies for bus and coach drivers across the UK.
Some companies have been forced to cancel services because not enough drivers are available.

Isn’t that the same in every industry
No, managers in businesses like this get crap pay as well. A friend of mine is a shift manager in the workshop at a local bus depot an makes around £25k which is crap these days. A manager job title doesn't automatically mean good pay
Maybe if they paid a living wage they wouldnt have this problem
Brexit baby! Greetings from the EU
@@davidatkins3498 please elaborate?
@@tytzup5397 do I really have to? Open your eyes sheep!
@@tytzup5397 1. Tory hard Brexit ends freedom of movement.
2. Lack of access to EU labour exacerbates global HGV driver shortages in Britain.
3. HGV drivers are underpaid and poorly served in Britain, and wages should increase.
4. Haulage and logistics firms raise wages for drivers to try to entice HGV drivers. These firms tend to have a lot of money. Drivers leave other industries for newly offered, newly livable wages.
5. Industries that don’t have as much money cannot competitively raise wages, so drivers are lost and service suffers.
6. If members of the public directly rely on their services (providing petrol, public transport, food, medicine, etc.), they will face interruptions in service and/or increased cost.
7. This hurts the public if their wages do not also increase, especially if they already don’t have enough money to live. This will also lead to rapid inflation, again disproportionately impacting the poor.
So the hard Tort Brexit we got has directly led to this issue, alongside issues like COVID. But the notable differences between Britain and even Northern Ireland definitely makes Brexit seem the culprit
Exactly
Perhaps they have had quite enough of poor working conditions, sub par pay and abuse from the public
They do get a lot of abuse I don’t blame them for quitting

😂 😂 ok so let me get my head round this. So bus drivers are becoming lorry drivers. So that means courier drivers will become bus drivers, taxi driver will become courier drivers, normal drivers will become taxi drivers then there’ll be a shortage of customers as everyone will be in lockdown again.
in a roundabout way yes
They should be paid more. I worked as service engineer and its a headache enough driving around cities all day in a car. Its a skill to be able to safely drive a bus getting beeped at all the time, pulling in and out of traffic
@Lies Tricks Either way it is a hassle of a job. Get more on lorries, but always away from home
The working class has had pay and conditions crushed by capitalism importing an over supply of labour in for decades.
Armed insurrection is becoming the only solution against this corrupt system

Good job we didn’t give up our cars then!! See the potential problems relying on public transport?
Haven't looked back when I got my car. I used to get home at 6:30 everyday when work finished at 5:00, yes, 3 hours travel there and back.
Cheaper on the wallet too, money I can put towards a property deposit.

Well done for not giving up your car despite never being asked to... Ffs.
Companies need to start investing in people and train them, pay them and treat them better. For too long companies have been relying on trained people from overseas and now with brexit and covid restrictions with travelling the 💩 is starting to hit the fan. It seems in every sector there has been a quick fix to get trained people to fill positions from elsewhere. Invest in people because if there are no people to do those jobs then there is no money coming in to pay anyone's wages from the bottom all the way yo the top.
If they start paying better wages then they also charger the end user more to cover costs
Wish we had an msm shortage
In these days of Covid, is it any wonder a driving professional would rather drive alone in the cab of a lorry than with 52 people in a bus, especially when the pay is better as well !!!
It seems they don't want to drive in lorries either though lol! Greetings from the EU!
Ffs it's hardly a plague
Paying them more might be the answer. Otherwise I fail to see how things will change
Load of rubbish! I saw three buses this morning & they all had drivers! 😜
Lol i imagined the headless horseman going past driving the buss😂
Ahhh I spoke to a bus driver and the stage coach company have recently made it really difficult for people to remain driving, they changed the rules, charged them extra for training and made them personally and financially responsible for something (can’t remember what) last year!!! ALL BY DESIGN!!

2016:Coming over here and taking our jobs
2021:Not coming over here and taking our jobs😂
No one is asking anyone to come over. The Government fully intends to employ all British workers first - then see what shortages there are; and send a message to Commonwealth workers to help out.
@@pandasrules7536 Translation: The government fully intended to create a problem, and then ask people on the other side of the world to come an help them solve it.
These private companies need to start paying sensible wages, not Just above minimum wage all this bullshit they don’’t make money Look at the train drivers and tube drivers to bus drivers pay
Train and tube companies are subsidised so they can pay a decent wage without passing it on to the customer
@@stevec6427 No, they're subsidised to get as much public money into the private sector as possible.
This is really sad. Half of the bus drivers used to dress like CEOs of thier buses and call passengers by name. Sad to see this news.

Aaaaaany time now..... Maybe tomorrow?
Ah shut up nan
They should write to the Germans living in the UK with a Class 3 license again - maybe they want to drive busses after turning down driving lorries.
@Ready For Anything. Thats an old classification for German driving licenses. When making a car driver license, Germans used to get the so called Class 3 qualification, which enabled them to drive 7.5t lorries as well (as well as having an unguided one axle trailer of 1.5 times the weight of the towing vehicle; up to 18.75t in total in case of a lorry). It was part of the car license but the practise was discontinued in the late 90s.
Why the germans should drive anything in the UK while they get the double in Germany???????
@@ezzmuch2391 The bulk of Germans residing in the UK are there for better-paid jobs: doctors, professors, bankers, ... The idea that those would change jobs and become HGV drivers is hilarious. There is indeed also a demand for HGV drivers in Germany and other EU countries. And the conditions for the drivers are better (not only payment).
@@ezzmuch2391 Keep on dreaming!!!
Brexit doesn’t look like such a good idea now eh ??
It simple pay us what we are worth. During covid we were one of the sector’s keeping the country going.
My sister recently just trained up to be a bus driver and is ready to quit now due to abuse from the public.
Management get good pay and bonous while putting pressure on drivers. That's the main reason.
That’s because it’s the worst paid driving job. I make £14 an hour after fees on parcels and food deliveries . Bus drivers are lucky to get £12 an hour………
I actually love all these shortages and hope the people don't fold, the government just wants to bring in more cheap labour when we need to stand strong and drive up wages
Indeed. People realising they can make changes and getting stronger. Definitely with food. Scare tactics from MSM aren't working
Such an easy problem to fix. The only reason fuel prices in the UK are 50% or more higher than the US is because of the MASSIVE amount of fuel tax the government charges. Quite simply, all they have to do is reduce the tax rate on fuel for buses and cut their operating costs significantly so they can pay drivers more and even improve public transport in the UK. One simple subsidy.
As more people shift over to electric, fuel duty will keep rising to cover the shortfall. Sadly most people can't afford a brand new electric car.
There is one thing I can guarantee we will not be short on, misery journalists.
yes, because reporting reality is considered unpatriotic now. And campaigning to damage your country is not. UK is getting browner and browner by the day.
Correct. There's nothing great about Britain to report on. A lot more of this type of news coming your way. Greetings from the EU!
@@davidatkins3498 Why do I get the sense that if 67mill people lost their jobs, lost their homes, and starving, Europeans would watch and laugh. Absolutely vile.
Been double dipped ,is going to be the Biggest problem for the UK
There's absolutely no shortage of bus drivers. ITS A SILLY (DUMB!) SALARY SHORTAGE. LEARN THE DIFFRENCE
No surprise there, bus drivers are treated and paid horrible. They are given rubbish hours, long random shifts. One would have to have the patience of a saint to stop every 200 metres to let people on and off a bus. How mind numbing. Coach or Lorry driving would be better than that.
People should also realise that one of the UK's biggest bus companies, Arriva, is actually owned by Deutsche bahn, I wonder what they pay staff in Germany? A lot of our buses are German MAN chassis and a lot are built overseas, some London buses are built in Egypt!! Crazy.
The company must be saving a ton on fuel and maintenance as they have less buses and routes. This should be passed onto the remaining drivers
So bus drivers are qualified to drive hgv’s now
Of course they are if they have HGV license I hold both PSV and HGV
Anyone with a 7.5t ticket can drive the hgv tractor solo.
It's scare the pensioners day today...

Public transportation is a failure.
I went to an interview at Stagecoach about a month ago (I won't mention the depot). The depot manager was probably one of the single most unpleasant men I've ever met. He essentially spoke about the "golden years" of bus driving. Said it all over now and asked if I'm sure I'm cut out for it. He then spent a further 10 minutes saying how much he hated Stagecoach, and he was soon leaving to go to another company (God help arriva bus).
I since moved into the education sector as a maintenance officer and get to drive a minibus a lot of the time, so best of both worlds.
Nothing to do with the salary's. As a driver myself it's more along the lines of the way we are treated by the public. I still drive as I love driving a bus however the public are extremely testing. So much so I just talk to passengers that talk to me.
Here we go again with the storage 😒🙄
Did that job for a few months. Lots of responsibility, stressful, shifts and long, usually irregular hours. Also not a healthy job due to the lack of exercise. Pay not much for all that.
A friend left his bus driving job after 22 years to do HGV. More pay as mentioned in the video, but also better hours nd no weekends.
Lets see if the public rush out and panic travel on the bus
Interesting how your problem is drivers going from buses to lorries to earn more money.
Here in Brasil we are facing a big shortage because city bus driving has become a job few people are able to do. It's just too stressful.
It's becoming common to hear from a bus driver it's doing 10, 11, 12 hours shifts, sometimes even more. 😮
And I loved driving the bus. I just got too pissed off by traffic. The other drivers are frequently very unrespectful with buses. 😕
Why is there suddenly a shortage off staff all over the world, whats the cause
Retirement is a common reason, as it was mentioned some Haulers left due to retirement.
I have also heard dentists are retiring along with other professions predicted to leave, such as pilots, accountants, surgeons and engineers.
Alot of these trades, businesses are unwilling to employ the new comers due to inexperience, however the experience market is about to dry up, so they will have no choice.
My GF is studying accounting, and we are expecting the market to dry up by the time she finishes studies and gets a small amount of experience under her belt.

The price of a bus ticket to town is ridiculous. Cheaper to take the car and park. I wonder what percentage of ticket price goes to foreign travel consortium's?
This is problem of management.
The bane of the UK is very bad management quality and short term thinking.
What about the shortage of shopworkers and NHS staff? Nah just want to create a stupid headline every industry is short in some form
£10 an hour is a garbage salary.
When will these shortages end?

Its not just about pay the companies treat all the drivers contempt I would never go back to it . I just do national work now. Lgv or pcv . Same crap more money.
Guess what, fuel prices are also rising for the trucking industry.
They don't get paid e ough either..
.but supermarkets are offering silly up front bonuses to head hunt bus drivers at the moment.. so eve if the bus driver breaks his contract and has to pay for his training.. he is still quids in

Again poor wages and poor conditions. Buses are becoming junkie taxies subsidised by the government. Normal people fear to use buses. So how must drivers feel!
Welp, I see the U.S., and the state of Maryland is not alone. Drivers need to make a decent living, bottom line.

Well the amount of buses on the rd I dont get why they're always late!
Where I live the buses are held together with the drivers will power and the mould and mildew are worthy of a place in kew gardens is it any wonder that a company that operates in this fashion has to look hard for drivers.?
Good thing i live next to a train station

It's a completely separate license, but fair enough.
Large vehicles behave in similar ways, easier to pass the test.
If only we had a shortage of middle class over opinionated toffs
Quick! How can we blame Brexit for this?
By pointing to the very obvious shortages of personnel caused by Brexit, perhaps?
Or is Brexit still sticking it to all those elites?
In the United States most agencies I know have either had to cut service or make last minute trip cancelations which sucks. In my area one agency started by cutting service but is canceling last minute more than another agency that didn't cut service substantially.
An aging workforce is a huge issue here. And yes the trucking (lory) competition is real here too
Maybe i shouldn't say this but there was no shortage of bus drivers before the Brexit vote! there was plenty of Polish bus drivers then.... everything seems to be going down hill lately doesn't it?

With the pandemic I think alot of people re-evlautated there lives and readjusted to something that's better for them and their families. Especially if they work unsociable hours and don't spend time with their families. Employers need to catch onto that.
It is very expensive to learn to drive a bus and at a significant cost to the individual for the chance of getting a job at the end of it.
Trent Buses used to train for free .. I presume there was a contractual obligation.

But there isn't a shortage on bus simulators trent Barton bus sim has lots of drivers with more buses.
Another thing people should realise about bus companies is the tendered routes, this is were a route is deemed necessary but not financially viable, the local authorities put them out to tender, the lowest bid wins, companies can charge £80 per mile, one route I was on did 100 miles a night per bus , they had 3 buses on all day , work out just how much that is, all paid for from your council tax!
