  • A shortage of bus drivers in the UK is being caused by better pay being offered to drive HGVs, according to a union.
It's thought there are more than 4,000 vacancies for bus and coach drivers across the UK.
Some companies have been forced to cancel services because not enough drivers are available.

@@tytzup5397 1. Tory hard Brexit ends freedom of movement.
      2. Lack of access to EU labour exacerbates global HGV driver shortages in Britain.
      3. HGV drivers are underpaid and poorly served in Britain, and wages should increase.
      4. Haulage and logistics firms raise wages for drivers to try to entice HGV drivers. These firms tend to have a lot of money. Drivers leave other industries for newly offered, newly livable wages.
      5. Industries that don’t have as much money cannot competitively raise wages, so drivers are lost and service suffers.
      6. If members of the public directly rely on their services (providing petrol, public transport, food, medicine, etc.), they will face interruptions in service and/or increased cost.
      7. This hurts the public if their wages do not also increase, especially if they already don’t have enough money to live. This will also lead to rapid inflation, again disproportionately impacting the poor.
So the hard Tort Brexit we got has directly led to this issue, alongside issues like COVID. But the notable differences between Britain and even Northern Ireland definitely makes Brexit seem the culprit

For too long companies have been relying on trained people from overseas and now with brexit and covid restrictions with travelling the 💩 is starting to hit the fan. It seems in every sector there has been a quick fix to get trained people to fill positions from elsewhere. When making a car driver license, Germans used to get the so called Class 3 qualification, which enabled them to drive 7.5t lorries as well (as well as having an unguided one axle trailer of 1.5 times the weight of the towing vehicle; up to 18.75t in total in case of a lorry). Such an easy problem to fix. The only reason fuel prices in the UK are 50% or more higher than the US is because of the MASSIVE amount of fuel tax the government charges. Quite simply, all they have to do is reduce the tax rate on fuel for buses and cut their operating costs significantly so they can pay drivers more and even improve public transport in the UK. One simple subsidy.

In the United States most agencies I know have either had to cut service or make last minute trip cancelations which sucks. In my area one agency started by cutting service but is canceling last minute more than another agency that didn't cut service substantially.

Another thing people should realise about bus companies is the tendered routes, this is were a route is deemed necessary but not financially viable, the local authorities put them out to tender, the lowest bid wins, companies can charge £80 per mile, one route I was on did 100 miles a night per bus , they had 3 buses on all day , work out just how much that is, all paid for from your council tax!
