    Its very popular but not so much hot composting.
    I looked into getting a hotbin but it had to be shipped from England at a cheap as chips price of $1200.00 😮
    I have a bin called an aerobin. Bigger, insulated plastic with a tube up the middle to let in air. Not as good as a hotbin, but will get to 65 degrees with a large lawn mix!Cheers, Garry.

      I have seen them. It’s a shame you can’t get a HB cheaper than that.

    And you are so right this HB composting is sooooo addictive ! I’ve watched 5 of your videos and it’s now 3.36am and I’ve gone outside - with the torch and opened up the valve at the top 2mm as you say . Mine is looking rather wet inside so guess what I’ll be doing when I get up tmrw . . . Adding plenty of shredded paper and bulking agent of course!

    • @BeanieComposter
      @BeanieComposter  Před 2 lety +1

      Wow what can I say. We have all done it. What temperatures have you had it up too. Where are you from and how is the weather with you. Good luck and thank you for watching keep us posted how you are getting on with it.

      @@BeanieComposter Hi there Beanie , yes your videos were great - spent the day completely emptying & dismantling my HB ! What I’ve learned today is to understand your HB first ! Never realised there was a piece at the bottom with holes in it - mine were completely filled in with soil so no air flow ! The temperature did get to 30 but had dropped to 20 over the last week or so . Having taken all the compost out I can see what’s the problem . The smell was horrendous ! Grass cuttings all matted together so probably too much in one load - never again ! What temperature does your gauge on the lid show when the long probe reads 60 ? I’ve ordered one to go inside but until it arrives I have to work on just the lid one. I’ve cleaned mine all up and it’s ready to start again . Im going to discard what I’ve taken out as it’s so clumpy I think it’ll take ages to get it back to something workable so I’ll put it on the bank of my garden - it runs sling a Country Park with a Brook running alongside my garden so lots of critters will benefit 👍 So to start off what’s the first layer I put in please ?

    • @BeanieComposter
      @BeanieComposter  Před 2 lety

      @@gailkelsing So put some fine twigs in the bottom first. Then just mix garden waste, grass clipping , veg peelings plenty of shredded paper /cardboard and plenty of bulking agent. Make sure it is well mixed. See videos for ratios. You need to fill to above the door hatch to get thing hot but don't worry if you cant you can just keep adding waste every other day until you reach the door hatch. The lid temperature is not a good sign of what the hotbin is as it depends how much waste is in it. You will feel it is warming up. You really need the temp dial inside. Hope this helps you out just remember you were probably adding the correct things but it is vital you have plenty of bulking agent for air flow and paper/cardboard for the moisture. Also make sure it is mixed so the air can flow. You did the right thing well done and good luck. Let us know how it is going.

    Thanks so much for another great video.Today I emptied the bottom section of my hotbin for the first time and I was so excited to see what all the hard work has produced.Needless to say I was not disappointed and have followed your instructions in the video.The difference to the quality of the compost once sieved was amazing and well worth taking the time to do.i saved all the bulking agent as well to reuse so that was a really good tip from you.Ive bagged all of the compost up and will leave it for another 4 weeks before I use it as I emptied the bin after 8 weeks as it was full.I think it could do with another month to just compost down a bit more.Really appreciate you and your beautiful wife taking the time to help all of us novice composters.Best wishes Liz.

      Hi Elizabeth
      Thank you. I'm glad you are enjoying and getting good results. I think if you can sieve it it makes a big difference but it is time consuming. It is also amazing how much you take out if it was your first then normally the next lot tends to get better as it has already been breaking down so be good to hear how your next lot compares. Thanks for watching and the lovely comment.

      @@BeanieComposter Thanks for your reply and yes I agree that the next lot will be a bit better.I never realised how much hard work sieving the compost would be but I still think well worth doing.im keeping bags of the leftovers from sieving on one side to break down longer and the finer compost is really worth being proud of.I have to admit to being totally obsessed with this composting now and I have to say the leachate is really great.i have a worm factory with the tiger worms but the plant food created from the hotbin is absolutely great.The old fashioned climbing roses I grow in my garden have never produced flowers as good as they have done this year.My beautiful roses have flourished with the leachate and my Charles de mills,Constance spry and Gertrude Jekyll climbers have never looked better.wish I could send photos.

Never received the internal thermometer with mine so think I’ll have to get one . Great tips and advice . @BeanieComposter  Před 2 lety

      Hi Gail The hotbin can go in shade or sun. The material it is made from gives it its insulating properties that mean even in shade it will work just as well and putting it in full sun will not make it work any better. Yes it can be tucked away ours is by the back of the garage.

      @@BeanieComposter I'm Norwegian, and hot composting seems to increase in popularity. Local authorities around the country offers a bin for free (£75ish deposit), so I took one. In addition, I purchased one for around £200, which is a completely different design.
      The one I got from the authorities ("KompostBjørn") is somewhat similar to your HotBin. It also came with a device that looks like at spring with a crankshaft, which enables me to drill down and drag up older material.

    Hi there Beanie instructor,s , hope all well in the rain down there still no rain and I am wanting some hopefully we may get som this week but not a certainty but getting cool for all of us . But my composter steaming yippee and now just slightly letting the wet cuttings dry a little ,were I was getting lots of leachate every day that’s slowed down a little and it all feels damp in the bin and steaming running just around 60 /63 so I’m happy with that have next feed ready to go in just finished in the house . And a start in the garden was at B&Q for a riddle in the hope I do actually get some compost to serve out was down there at 7;15 am this morning and it’s fatal cause got some trailing petunias really nice ones & and some trailing pelargoniums at cheap price for four plants it’s fatal can’t walk past any plants can put in hanging baskets , had a big fat hedgehog plodding around the garden at dusk so told it to eat plenty of slugs whilst it was here fingers crossed the composter keeps hot , I will be devastated if it suddenly goes cold and wrong . Sorry I did say I’m left handed and because of the motor disease my left hand shakes a bit and I’m always rushing to get back in the garden so hope you can follow all I write it’s fatal pressing full stops and commas as can get 10 of them at one go . Morning Beanie team I think I may have a problem , I had some one call bye to see my garden even though we are in lock down we are allowed to meet out doors practicing masks and distancing . They were really nice and said my garden was amazing even though my lawn is mostly moss they said the lawn what lawn the garden has so many things to look at don’t see the lawn , I grew another foot so pleased but I was due to feed the composter so tipped the ready mixed feed an was not until late last night realised I had tipped the lot in that was enough for 2 feeds . Right shall I go today and take some out ? Or as long as temp well up just leave it and miss the Friday feed what would you do . And hurray we have had a tiny bit of rain not much and not for long , the Hedgehogg seems to be doing ok now that’s just another thing that I will be worrying about now will it go back and forth over our little Rd at night or should I shouldn’t I feed it if nothing to worry about, I find something I did give it som crushed cat biscuits and a tiny bit of cat wet food and have now got several dishes of water dotted around the garden for it oh my life worry to much . And go on to much about everything 😂 love to u three Jean X. Ps when I’ve stopped going on see all the mistakes but just leave them and press enter sorry

    They sell compost in bags that sit for a long time. If the bag is sealed with moistened compost is that okay for long term storage?

    • @BeanieComposter
      @BeanieComposter  Před 2 lety

      I do not see any reason why not. I store some of mine for a year and it is perfect when I take it out. As long as you have air holes and it is moist then it should store long term. Most of mine that I remove will have worms in it so they will happily carry on breaking it down.
