Not trying to bash, but it can't be the infamous lower ball joint failure if they were aftermarket. Happy you were uninjured. For those reading, if you hear unusual noises, don't ignore it, have it inspected. Treat your rig with some respect. Those wheel spacers didn't do you any favors with the added stress on the LBJ, but it does make it look nice. Its a damn fine looking 3G4R. Pushing 300K on my 99 and she drives like new after replacing the ball joints and control arm bushings all the way around. Looking forward to seeing the walk around.

I towed 2 Toyota pickups the other week for this, happened to both of them getting off the freeway. one was a 98 the other 00. my 2001 ls430 had really bad balljoints when I got it, first thing I did! glad you're safe!

Had the lower ball joints done on my '98 4Runner a couple of months ago. Had the radiator changed today, along with the rear diff breather. All preventative on a totally stock vehicle. I'm right at 200K and I'm wondering if I should now follow in your footsteps with the lift and this front end work. BTW--I bought a '94 Miata 'R' Package (white, black trim) new off the lot in September of '94. Selling it in '96 was absolutely the worst car decision I've ever made. Selling my '98 4Runner would be the second worst. Watching this space carefully...

Lol my passenger lower ball joint JUST popped out as I was driving it into the shop for an inspection. Needless to say, it failed.😂

Lmao, convenient place for it to fail at least.

What caster degree did you end up going with? I have a slight rear fender rub when in reverse at close to full lock after switching to 33"s.

How many miles were on your 4runner when you had your L.B. failure? I have 194,000 miles on my 2002 4runner 2wd. It really never sees off-road so would you still recommend me changing my lower B.J.?

I would just jack the truck up and inspect the joints, check for play. If there’s any play or visual wear change them.

So you got to have a press to change your ball joints?
