I worship the god TAEMIN as well. I'm a devoted ARMY (excellent dancers to be found in BTS), but I am not so delusional as to say /anyone/ in KPOP is a better dancer, or just a better performer in general, than Taemin. He is the IDEAL IDOL...period.
This dance was choreographed by:
- Bailey Sok: screaming because I used to watch her dance when she was like 10, she's 16 now and this is her first time choreographing for a male solo artist
-Kasper: a famous Korean choreographer who's basically choreographed most of SM's songs, particularly EXO. He's also the choreographer of "Criminal" alongside a famous Japanese choreographer Koharu Sugawara, who's also choreographed for Taemin as well (Goodbye and Move)
- Ian Eastwood: who's choreographed for Shinee before for their MV "View" and has worked with other artists both in Kpop, like VIXX, EXO's Lay, Kris Wu as well as artistic like Justin Bieber, Hailey Kiyoko, Tori Kelly, Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino, and Zendaya. This isn't his first time working with Taemin as well as he choreographed Taemin's "Danger" back in 2014.

@@SeatinReacts No problem, I just love that so many people are recognizing Taemin for his abilities and his hard work. He doesn’t get nearly as much recognition for his work as he should be getting. Also, totally forgot about Kenone Madrid who is also a choreographer and has choreographed for kpop groups like BTS.
You also for forgot Keone, he helped choreograph this dance as well! One of the greatest dancers of all time! He’s married to Mari and they were the leaders of choreo cookies and other amazing groups and were apart of world of dance!
Such a crazy contrast to Criminal. Idk that anyone other than Taemin could've pulled this off tbh. So happy to see Minho discharged today, can't wait for SHINee news

I love the fact that he is all about his artistic expression (which is just becoming more and more Taemin as he gets older) and not about pumping out what he thinks will be popular. And that's WHY he is so loved by fans and the industry. Thanks Taemin, for bringing us the Art.

Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two performers in the industry (Kai from EXO taking the other top spot), he was made a member of SuperM.
Fun fact: The female voice you hear in the song is BoA. She is a solo artist also under SM and she is Taemin's highly respected senior who debuted with SM in 2000 at the age of 13 and, now after 20 years, she is known as one of the senior-most members of the industry. BoA is legend. Check out BoA's "202020" documentary that was just released by SM to discover what makes BoA so special and why it is so fitting she was included in this song.
As you may know, Taemin debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Idea" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. "Idea" is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. ‘2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of "2 Kids" as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
Some think, and I agree, that "Idea" is a metaphor for the way Taemin sees his career. He loves what he does, almost to the point of obsession -- like "my messiah" he is drawn to it and can't help worship it -- he practically needs to dance and perform to survive. But, at the sametime, it pretty much controls his life and living as an Idol means everything he does is done in the public eye and he will never be able to live a normal life -- his "dangerous dream that is engulfing him and "swallowing him" up. The stress and constant demand for perfection he feels may be "slowly Killing me," etc
I particularly like the verse that says, "The blue light, When you and I face each other, Stained in it, All one's feelings, It's an infinite range, In my world, Most dazzling,The absolute value of you, My my IDEA." These lines seem to be talking about Taemin's fans. SHINee's fan color is pearl aqua blue, so the blue light you see in the MV and the blue light he talks about in the lyrics of "Idea," makes me think he is referring to the impact and influence the fans have had on everything he has done in his career. And although he loves and appreciates us, it has not come without a few sacrifices and negative aspects as well. The mutual love and respect between Taemin and the fans also has added a lot of extra pressure on him because he always wants to give people his absolute best and he is constantly trying to live up to an impossible standard of self-imposed flawlessness.
So with every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed to the point he was suffering from stockholm syndrome; he fell in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is essentially inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. So in other words, even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself) he still can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt him, etc. :D "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does, and his strive for perfection is what has made him the industry's top dancer and one of the most popular and well respected artists.
Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Idea," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.
And, as the youngest member of SHINee, Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With more than 12 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he has only gotten more magnificent over the years.
Now after 12 years Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him. He is a legend among legends.
The funny thing is, although Taemin is ultra confident when on stage, when not performing his personality is the complete opposite.That's what makes him even more lovable and why he is so popular.
When on stage Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he becomes the most powerful and magnificent performer that commands the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance.
When not on stage, Taemin, is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL.
SHINee is known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee is the group that really set the standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups work to reach.
Most people fall in love with Taemin for his dancing but when he shows his goofy personality, you can’t help but love him more.

Instant subscribe here! He is imo the best male dancer in kpop, his technique is perfect and his style makes him unique. In the video he is somewhere between hell and heaven. Also he is kinda protraying his old self and his new self. He said this is related to Plato's theory of Forms where he looks for his "identity", that's why IDEA is pronounced in that way (greek). Therefore, I think, in the video he is in this between where he can portray his ideal self/identity/ego. His brain is so big, and he comes with the best concepts. In my opinion that's what makes him so unique.

The thing I like most about Taemin's performance is that he is A) perfectly exact. Does what he needs to but doesn't overdance or get out of rythm because of a turn gone long or something BUT B) he doesn't ever sacrifice emotion and the emotion of the song is perfectly conveyed, and he vertainly doesn't underdance either. Exact Emotional Perfection, that's Taemin.

I became Taemin fan since I was him in a movie - Final life. He is an amazing dancer but also a good actor, his duality is insane. He is anime character really. He's very cute but unexpectedly he transform into dangerous :)

Yo have you checked out Taemin's stage performance for Black Rose? What you described as the 'hand clawing' is also harkening back to Black Rose. The storyline behind the NGDA albums is really so brilliant and ingenious! I love how deep Taemin's concepts are!! .....I'm going to attempt to give my thoughts and understanding on the MV, but pls feel free to drop your own thoughts!
So, this time, Taemin said Act 2 is about finding his identity (this is especially reflected in the final song of the album titled Identity) and this storyline of him finding his identity can be seen as continuous from Act 1 into Act 2.
The title song of Act 1 - Criminal - was based on stockholm syndrome. In the MV he was both the suspect & the innocent. I think, for Taemin, this can refer to his life as an idol, his art and career etc...
In Act 2, Taemin talked about how IDEA (title song) is influenced by Plato's Theory of Forms - which is a philosophical theory/concept about the existence of 2 different realms: the physical and the ideal/spiritual realms. I think Plato basically says that the physical realm is full of imperfections (perfection cannot exist) and there exists a more real, perfect, and ideal realm beyond the reach of the physical realm, which contains perfect, eternal entities called forms or ideas.
With that being said, I think Taemin's IDEA is basically about him trying to reach his perfect, "ideal" self & thus, creating a new, improved "ego" of himself in the process...
In the MV, we get glimpses of heavenly and hellish versions of Taemin. In the beginning, the white set is depicting heaven - but here we see that the other heavenly beings were looking at him strangely since he is not dead (the MV director mentioned smthg along these lines) and this is the continuation of Criminal where Taemin is deluding himself into believing that he is happy living this lie (stockholm syndrome with himself).
But then, he starts seeing glimpses of reality and hell... he sees that he is living a lie and that he has been deceiving himself.
The forest scene also shows multiple Taemins where it seems like he's trying to search for a way out since he realized that he is a prisoner...
The staircase is in between heaven and hell is where his ideal form exists.
In my mind i imagine that by the end of the MV, his new ego realizes that he cannot achieve perfection in the physical realm and accepts this fact. He then manages to find a way out from the prison that was his old criminal ego through the help of IDEA.. and he reaches a middle ground...
Taemin mentioned in an interview something about wanting to create a new "Taemin" & break free - this is like he wants to become one step closer to his perfect ideal form so I think the final scene shows him breaking free and moving on with the intention of reaching as close to his perfect/ideal form as he can.
