    Why do the veins show all over racehorses so much, opposed to regular horses? Is it just because they are muscular?

    • @PurplePoppyAnimator
      @PurplePoppyAnimator Před 5 lety

      Yep! Muscles can cause the veins to pop, and Thoroughbreds hot up and get excited very easily, after exercise or getting extremely excited, sweating up etc the veins can be seen "bulging" through the skin. This happens to humans too but on a lesser scale!

    • @jaciharris7735
      @jaciharris7735 Před 7 lety

      Well, American Pharoah probably has the extra large heart gene. I think Secretariat is in his maternal line and Secretariat had an enlarged heart. It wasn't the only thing that made American Pharoah great, but it helped!

      Jaci H. - just Google All Breed Pedigree
      and put in: Secretariat
      you will see he is a Grandson of the great Nasrullah (who was by NEARCO). Secretariat's Dam Sire was "Princequillo - One of four major large-hearted sires (also War Admiral, Blue Larkspur, and Mahmoud)".

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg Před 5 lety +1

      Jaci Harris Secretariat was as blue-blooded as TBs get!
      I've seen the misconception on the Net before, that he wasn't particularly well bred; I'm not sure where it's coming from. Possibly because many of his progenitors raced in Europe, and Americans are not aware of how important they were as runners or stallions. His sire Bold Ruler, who was American bred and raced, was the most successful sire in North America of his time, as well as a Hall of Fame racehorse. Bold Ruler was a 3X U.S. champion, including 1957 Horse of the Year and U.S. sprint champion the following year. Until Northern Dancer came along, Bold Ruler probably had been the greatest North American based sire of the 20th century; he was top North American sire 8 times, the most of any stud in the 20th century. Bold Ruler's direct male line was, as noted by sainglain below, Nasrullah and Nearco, both great racehorses (in Europe) and both outstanding sires. Nasrullah was a champion 2-yr-old in the UK; undefeated Nearco, a 3X champion in Italy, ranks among Europe's all-time greats. Bold Ruler's dam, Miss Disco, was a stakes winning sprinter, and the daughter of Discovery, 2X champion U.S. handicap horse. A Hall of Famer runner, Discovery wasn't very successful siring racehorses, but he proved a terrific broodmare sire: he was damsire of Native Dancer as well as Bold Ruler.
      Secretariat's dam, Somethingroyal, did nothing on the track, but that's not unusual for successful broodmares. Producer of multiple stakes winning and stakes placed horses, she was already considered a blue hen (top class broodmare) before she gave birth to Secretariat at the relatively advanced age of 18. She was well-bred, being a daughter of Irish-bred, American raced Princequillo. Princequillo was a successful, though not Hall of Famer caliber, racehorse, winner of multiple important stakes, and is generally considered the best long distance U.S. runner other than Kelso (courtesy of the large heart, mentioned below); his own sire, Prince Rose, is often thought the best horse ever to have raced in Belgium. Even more pertinent to Somethingroyal's value as a broodmare, Princequillo was a great broodmare sire. In addition to Secretariat, Princequillo was damsire of European Horse of the Year Mill Reef, U.S. Horse of the Year Fort Marcy, and Secretariat's rival Sham. Somethingroyal's dam, Imperatrice, was a stakes winner and a producer of 6 stakes winners, a blue hen herself from a line of blue hens.
      So Secretariat came from an immensely powerful sire line, and an immensely powerful female family. Many of the males up close in his pedigrees were great runners *and* great sires; five of the seven mares in his first three generations are blue hens. His pedigree had both speed (Bold Ruler and Miss Disco) and stamina (Princequillo), and was strong on both grass and dirt. Ron Turcotte, btw, thought Secretariat, who was turf champion as a three-year-old, better on grass than on dirt, a scary thought.
