I'm struck by how honest Nouwen was about his weaknesses and failings. He didn't hide behind a veneer of piety and religiosity. He's the perfect conduit for the faith in our culture which prizes authenticity and truth telling.

I am a Malaysian Catholic. Whenever I get the The Herald every week, I would eagerly look up Fr. Ron 's articles. His is so good at articulating the deep human pyche. What I love about him is that he is highly impartial, unbiased, when he writes about stuff like suicide and mental illnesses. I wish there were more people, more priests like him. I had a very bad experience with a former parish priest because of my OCD. Every single priest should be educated on mental health issues, if that is not already the common practice. Otherwise, how do we go to them for confession? We would come out feeling worse off! God bless Fr. Ron with Good Health and with lots of Love, Joy & Peace! 💜💜💜🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I feel I have so much in common with Henri J. Nouwen. I wish I could have met him....coincidentally, I entered seminary to become a priest in September 1996, the month in which he died. Like him I feel constantly restless, not entirely at home in this life and not fitting in into any specific category...I experience so many contrary emotions and I also feel slightly artistic finding some solace in writing and poetry. Above all, I feel I am never complete....I feel there is something lacking in me. Could he not be made a candidate for beatification and canonization?

Contentment. Thomas a Kempis: Do not trust feelings. Bk. 3. ch. 33. Imitation of Christ.
"My son, do not trust in your present feeling, for it will soon give way to another. As long as you live you will be subject to changeableness in spite of yourself. You will become merry at one time and sad at another, now peaceful but again disturbed, at one moment devout and the next indevout, sometimes diligent while at other times lazy, now grave and again flippant.
"But the man who is wise and whose spirit is well instructed stands superior to these changes. He pays no attention to what he feels in himself or from what quarter the wind of fickleness blows, so long as the whole intention of his mind is conducive to his proper and desired end."

This is terrible- you’re feeling thoughts of creativity allows looseness and saying it’s okay to break your vows

Henri never broke his vows. It’s not ok. Fr, Ron was talking about the sensitivities of the mystic that needs balance with discipline.

I can’t explained why I object to this presentation but I found it a bit disturbing sometimes,

The Imitation of Christ, following Augustine, says if we reject Christ's actual teachings and the Fathers (and Mothers) we immerse ourselves in others (and trouble then looms) and in our passions. The problem with the romantic view of artists (I do not say Henri Nouwen) is that so many artists did not seek the Absolute but --- lets be frank --- the Orgasm. One need only look at Picasso's "relationships" with women.
BTW, Gotta watch those unnaturally prolonged inflections when speaking.

Of course, sleeping with everyone doesn't do anything for them. It's just mush.
