I live about 2mi from the strip, and yeah I can see some of the casinos from my yard. Although typically locals tend to avoid the strip unless we have something specific to go there for like show tickets or work. Moved here many years ago, and I love it here.

I had a board game in the early 70s called High Stakes that was based on vegas back then, it was the same but different from monopoly which was based on atlantic city nj. I remember it having a miniature slot machine that you would earn spins on. My neighborhood friends and i would play both games all the time.

I live in Florida and went to Vegas for the first time at 21 in 2015 and have been going regularly since, I had no idea a lot of the places I’ve been going were under different names before or “recently” acquired. The LINQ and Aria were always great to get cheaper food or be able to sit there and gamble low money and get free drinks only paying tips.

I live in New Jersey. I went on "holiday" to Las Vegas once, for several days. I only spent about 2 days at the resorts and casinos, and spent the rest of my time visiting the Hoover Dam, The Grand Canyon, The NASCAR and NHRA races and other popular tourist attractions within a several hour drive from the city (Grand Canyon being the furthest from the city, in Arizona).

the Strip is actually in unincorporated Clark County, not Las Vegas. Las Vegas has a population of over 646,000 so you didn't need to check out suburbs to see where people live. Should've just typed in residential Las Vegas.

You don't have to gamble to have a fun time in Las Vegas.
Flying in, you see the Strip and it looks like a typical big American city's cluster of huge office buildings, and then you remember that these are almost all hotels.

Las Vegas was born in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. Nearby Hoover Dam was being built by the US government’s “New Deal” infrastructure program, the workers lived on sight of that project. People opened bars, restaurants, hotels & brothels to attract the “well paid” workers. Gambling soon arrived after the dam construction ended, enabling the various Mafia enterprises to develop the strip. Sin City never sleeps, and is close to Arizona & California, and of course the Grand Canyon. A worthy trip in its own right, summers are awfully hot in the desert. Enjoy your travels 😎

The casinos never close. The majority of the Strip is actually not part of the City of Las Vegas. It is unincorporated in Clark county. Downtown Fremont St is in the City of Las Vegas. Many locals don't visit the strip. They go do a locals casino which has its own couple large companies who own those.

Worked @ Caesars Palace when the crazy building along the strip began in 1992 caesars opened Cafe Lago in 2000, and Magical Empire in 1996. The new colosseum in 2003. New towers, employee cafeteria, room service, automatic uniform retrieval system, mammoth employee 8-story double parking garage with overhead walkway connection the transformation was fun and exhilarating

I moved to Vegas as a kid in the '80s when the Strip was basically run by the mob. I of course don't like the mafia but the Strip resorts had a more personable feel with the casino floor managers and the staff knowing the regulars on a personal name basis and handing out free tickets to shows and other freebies. You'd always run into other locals that you knew on the Strip which seems incredible now. Unless they work there, most locals avoid the Strip now since it's too crowded, expensive, and a pain to park your car. Sometimes locals will go to a show or a specific restaurant or club on the Strip, or take visitors from out of town to show them the sights. The total metro area has a little under 2.5 million people so, yeah, there's tons of residential neighborhoods.

I live in North West Vegas, about 12 miles from the strip. We locals hate going down there. There is a local’s casino near me, but I have no reason to go there either.
The only time I go down to the strip is for business conferences.
Everything is being built for out of towners; the wife and I have gone to T-Mobile ONCE to see the Golden Knights play, but that’s it. We locals didn’t want the Raiders to come here, but here they are.
Now we’re getting the A’s, which we don’t want either, but our tax dollars are sure as hell going to pay for them.
We have the worst school system in the country, but all our tax money is going to subsidize these corporate projects that we are priced out from enjoying (cough, cough, F1…).
    Ugh.

I used to live 1½ hrs from Vegas, in the beautiful town of St. George, Utah, but I didn't go there until years later, when my wife and I decided that's where we'd get married. We stayed at the Luxor, then at New York New York, which we preferred. There's even a rollercoaster on the roof.

We're locals and live about 10 mins from the Strip, we love just driving down the strip either during the day or night, it's beautiful, still kinda trafficky though, but very cool. Both MGM Grand and Caesars are both Resorts/Casino properties, they both have entertainment, casino (gambling), shopping, restaurants, etc etc. As of 2022-2024, the population of the city of Las Vegas is approximately 667, 282 and in the greater metro Las Vegas area the 2023 population was 2,899,000. It's so much more than just the strip/casino's here, there are beautiful mountains and lots and lots of parks, recreation areas, museums, entertainment/nighlife, etc etc.....and Yes, their opened 24/7/365

Vegas has a weird culture where, once a building is 60-70 years old, they replace it, and destroys it via explosive demolition. Even when the "bones" of the building are better than some new buildings.
Other parts world see the structure that's structurally sound, to be repaired, or restored. No matter how old the building is.

Case in point, the Oakland Athletics is scheduled to relocate to Salt Lake City, then Las Vegas once that new ballpark gets built.
The Vegas location is where the Tropicana Las Vegas (owned by Bally (BAW-lee) was since 1957. They're building a new resort somewhere else.

I LOVE Vegas. Usually stay at the Wynn/Encore. If you ever go, you'll be blown away by the sheer size of these Mega Hotel/Casino/Shopping & Convention properties. It's an amazing place, but being your big wallet. It's expensive even if you don't gamble! ❤ PS you should do a little dive into the decades of the Mob Era of Vegas. Now THAT was WILD.

I have been to Nevada, but never Las Vegas. I'm not much of a gambler and I don't personally associate the city with the type of cultural venues I would normally wish to visit. The place seems like a giant Hoover perpetually stuck in your pocket sucking out every penny. I'd rather travel abroad or go to cities with decades of historic past, art museums, interesting neighborhoods and less of a "plastic" atmosphere. I've been to Dubai, and it's true, it has a sort of Disney-like quality as well. I see Las Vegas as the city version of Trump's golden toilet. It's shiny and expensive, but it's still a toilet.
