I actually really liked Hiyoko. I know, she has an abusive personality, which is unacceptable. But can you really blame her? She herself was bullied because of something she couldn't control, and she couldn't even see her parents very often. She had two choices, be like Mikan and be a 'wimp' or become a bully to drive others away. She clung to Mahiru because she was the only person she knew that was willing to care about her without any lolita complex undertones. Of course, shes not for everyone, and I completely understand why anyone would hate her. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in.

Wow I'm surprised to find others that like Saionji. I know she's a bitch, but her personality is pretty unique compared to the others in DR2. The community thinks I'm delusional for liking her.
I like her too she is cute and I like her persona.
D2 SPOILERS- You can tell that when a character mentions others in their free time conversations, that character will die before them. She did not mention Teruteru because he dies before her and it would have been a continuity error. But she mentions Akane, Gundham and Sonia who all outlast her. I have yet to play DV3 but I'll be keeping my eye out.

On the scale from D tear to SSS tear Hiyoko would be in B- on my list. Cute character, tsundere-style, kinda annoying, and a little smart. But... Nah, DR has tons of better characters.
Hiyoko may be insufferably cruel, entitled, and exploitative, but I'd say that's a product of her upbringing. Given some of the things she's mentioned, it makes perfect sense as to why she turned out this way. Can't really expect someone raised in an environment completely devoid of kindness and empathy to develop such qualities on their own. In a way, as much as she'd hate to admit it, she's a lot like Mikan.

I have mixed feelings about Hiyoko because on one side, in speaking her mind she's often in tune with the player's thoughts about certain characters and their personalities/relationships. She provided comic relief in the sense that she gets away with saying such awful things because of her cute appearance. But I do think she was unnecessarily harsh to Mikan. Not that I particularly liked Mikan, but why target someone who has no sense of self-worth and is hopelessly depraved?

I'm probably one of the few people who like Hiyoko. I do like how the beginning of the game just messes with your expectations when you first see her. I do like her design and I find her faces she makes on her sprites usually silly. I do see why people would hate her though and that's fine. I do like her.

I confess I was neutral, bordering on disliking her when first introduced to her in the game. Then in chapter 2 I sorta opened up to her and started to get used to her mean comments. Then in chapter 3, without realizing it, I was devastated when she died. I hadn't realized how much she grew on me D:

Hiyoko is a very mixed bag for me. For the positive, I actually enjoy how she can be pretty uncompromising. She usually means what she says, even though she does tend to spout out insults. She can raise good points about character's really negative traits, like Akane being a complete moron sometimes, and Kazuichi acting like a sycophant for Sonia (the latter of which is actually a VERY annoying issue for me since I like Kazuichi, and would have rather him growing out of his obsession with Sonia.) She became something of a product of her environment, becoming terrible in her own way due to some pretty abhorrant treatment that she probably wasn't lying about.On the other hand, Hiyoko is also a relentless bully, and incredibly mean to people constantly-getting to the point that it's unbearable. She can't stop hurling insults at people during the second class trial, even when she's placed in the hot seat, doing NOTHING to gain favor for herself. I understand her not thinking clearly, but NO ONE with any common sense would antagonize people who could get you killed. Not only that, but her crocodile tears are annoying-it feels like she just tries backing out of any real punishment anyone less forgiving than every person on the island would probably dole out to her. Lastly, she is an unrelenting bully, without ANY sense of self-awareness. Mikan doesn't do herself any favors by never even trying to defend herself or get help, but Hiyoko fails to see that picking on a weaker person is exactly what happens to her-she became what she hated and never realized it. She does tend to go too far as well, being outright cruel to characters. One example I can think of is when, apparently, Hiyoko flat-out said that Kazuichi was going to die for sure, and while I did get a bit of dark humor at her dying while Kazuichi survived, that does not change the fact that it is COMPLETELY horrible to say, especially given their context.The biggest problem Is really how she lost a lot of character development and died in Kuzuryuu's place. Frankly, both characters had done terrible things, but given general impressions on Hiyoko, I can't help but wonder if she would get proper development had she lived on instead of Kuzuryuu.

I actually love Hiyoko,
In Hiyoko’s Free-Time events, she reveals most of her backstory. She lived as the heiress of the Saionji Clan with her grandmother. Her grandmother, who was also the head of the school of traditional Japanese Dance, treated Hiyoko well but was incredibly strict. Hiyoko’s grandmother didn’t care about her at all and even refused to allow Hiyoko to see her parents.
People were jealous of Hiyoko because of her position as heiress. Because of this, they bullied her horribly. They poisoned her food and put needles in her shoes among other terrible things.
The one thing that Mikan and hiyoko have is that they both have really depressing back stories

She should have survived instead of Akane imo. Hiyoko actually had character development potential. Akane is always just "there" and doesn't do anything usefull or interesting ever.
Same can be said for any of the "survivors" of DR2 except Hajime and Fuyuhiko. Would have much rather had Mahiru and Hiyoko than Sonia, Kazuichi and Akane.
IchCharacter I really like Sonia as a fish-out-of-water comic relief character, and she’s the only comic relief that survives to the end. I do have negative feelings towards Kazuichi and Akane since they didn’t have too much character development, but Sonia is definitely up there.
I think it's kind of stupid that most of the survivors of a survival game that was all about intelligence were the dumbest people on the island. Akane and Sonia are frankly retarded, in spite of Sonia supposedly being a genius that knows over 30 different languages. Seriously, she almost never did anything useful, though she should have been smart. They should have toned that way down and not exaggerated so much. Generally the characters felt like the writers had taken actual characters and flanderized them to hell and back until only three traits remained that were constantly repeated throughout the entire game, never changing.
Comic relief characters are generally not a good idea, if that's pretty much their entire character. That goes for Kazuichi, Sonia and Akane, all of them are mostly comic relief and don't actually contribute much of anything to the general plot or solving the trials, as far as I remember. Same could arguably said about Nekomaru and Gundham, outside of the 4th trial, they also pretty much fell into the comic relief category and were incredibly flat. There was just way too much of that in DR2, for my taste.
Pure comic relief characters are also fine, sure, but you don't want 1/3rd of your cast to be comic relief outside of the comedy genre, more often than not. The cast also lacked any really intelligent characters like Celestia, Togami (he still had his retarded moments, but far less than anyone in DR2) and Kyouko to balance the scales a little bit. The only characters that seemed to have somewhat functional brains were Nagito and Chiaki, in spite of Nagito being insane. Then there's the development issue, considering that only Peko, Fuyuhiko and Chiaki had decent character arcs, Hiyoko's being cut short before it even really started.
I think Danganronpa THH handled this much better, instead having only two characters that could actually be labeled purely comic relief, Hiro and Hifumi. Everyone else had more to their character and the arguably smartest and most competent characters survived the game as well (Byakuya and Kyoko). There was also some very interesting character development, I'd nominate Hina for my favorite character arc in the entire series, though I could get why some people might hate her for the 4th trial. But say what you want to, all of the characters in that game were constantly moving and had more to their character than just one aspect.

You know Hiyoko may be my favorite dr character. She's just super interesting to me, and honestly she's one of the ones that Im most interested in a possible post game arc. She kind of got killed in the middle of a character arc, and in the post game not only do we have all of the despair stuff to deal with, but also the jump in time itself. Everyone is going to be waking up in a body that's been torn and beaten, but Hajime and Hiyoko probably have it the worst in that regard. There's already lots of famworks covering post game Hajime stuff though, so I find Hiyoko to be more interesting to think about. Also unrelated to post game stuff but I feel like people forget that it's heavily implied that people have actually tried to kill Hiyoko before? Like holy shit dude people seriously downplay how horrible Hiyoko's childhood was even when they admit it was bad. Hiyoko's behavior is not ok, but you can't deny that she her being this way is completely understandable in combination with her really fucked up life.

One thing which is easy to notice throughout all fandoms is that there usually a character like Hiyoko where they can come off as rude and can be hated a lot. But most of their hatred come’s from a sad tragic past which scared them into becoming the character they present towards others. Hiyoko tried to make a few steps in the right path when she was warming up to the group and forgave (I think, I forgot) fuyuhiko. Yet due to the writing being really..bad-ish since Pekos sacrifice for Fuyuhiko was to good for Fuyuhiko to die in chapter three it got rewritten for Hiyoko sadly. She was making progress but it got cut short. It’s sad but we can only make our own rewrites. That’s all lol

I want to say this right now but, I'm a Hiyoko kinnie myself but pls don't defend her by using her backstories.
I know that her story was sad but I know that doesn't justify her actions, but at least it explains it . I like her because I relate to her backstory. I don't know why but I kind of have some enthusiam on mean characters lmao.
And while I'm reading the comments/replies, I think Kazuichi should've died instead of Hiyoko. I heard people want Sonia to be the one to get killed but she deserves to be a survivor because of the whole Gundham thing, same with Akane & Nekomaru. Yes, I know were useless the whole time but at least they had a 10% character development unlike Kazuichi drooling over Sonia all the time.
Despite me liking Sonia, she helped a lot on chapter 5. Not gonna lie, without Hiyoko the game feels empty.

hiyoko is HIGHLY underrated and given WAY too much hate. she’s one of my favorites in this game and it makes me so sad to see how much hate she gets. AND i’m a mikan kinnie,,,, if i can like her. y’all can make an effort to understand her alskjs (but seriously i feel like hiyoko just needs love)

I can't like her.. but the writers did a great job writing a hateable character. I understand her bullying, but why does she need to kill the ants and crabs? And she always needs to throw an insult on every character.. Though her relationship with Mahiru is cute and it fills up her loneliness quite well.

At the same time, I'm not surprised Hiyoko was targetted by her. She entered the music venue while Mikan was prepping her murder against someone else. ...so it's not like she could be left alive. Even if Mikan and Hiyoko didn't meet up like that, I'd *still* not be surprised considering Hiyoko's treatment of Mikan.
This is one of my little nitpicks regarding the 3rd trial, some details of the case are just either lazily held together or just flat out ignored, for example what was the murder weapon used to slit hiyokos throat? how did mikan even manage to kill hiyoko so quickly? i doubt she would've just simply let mikan trot right over to her and slit her throat you would've expected her to atleast try and fight back if she had saw it coming

Just putting this out there. Hiyoko is not a bad person at all, despite being a huge bully. It's the way she was raised that made her who she is today. It's not her fault she can't tie her own kimono without Mahiru's help. She actually depended on Mahiru a lot, and she was a better person with Mahiru by her side. If she survived, she could of easily grown into a lovable character, I'm sure of it! Hiyoko isn't a bad person at all, she just needs some love.
