Honestly this is the best CZcams channel to educate you on the many Honda models out there for sale. I wish we had someone like Carl as our local dealer because i trust that he has his customer's best interests in mind and wants to sell them exactly what they need and NOTHING they don't. He is also extremely educated on his product line which i can't say for most shops. I bought an HRN216VKA since it was the lowest on the price line without going to a straight push mower. I love everything about it accept the handle mechanism to drive the mower. My thumbs take a lot of abuse and looking back i should have spent more and gotten the model with the Orange lever within the HRN series.

3 years ago I bought an electric start hrx217 with the select drive and if it holds out,I'll never own another mower. I mow my lawn,my daughters lawn,my sisters lawn, and my sister's neighbors lawn. It's always left the lawn looking beautiful. I've mowed them wet, when I'd skipped and the grass was to high, and I even use it to mulch leaves in the fall. It sets in my shed from the 1st week of November til the first mow at the end of march and always starts right up. It's getting a tune up in a week or two and a new set of blades. By years end ill check the belt and maybe replace the drive wheels. It's been a great mower from a quality standpoint and the selectable mulch/bag/discharge works great. When you have it set at full on bagging it leaves nothing at all in your lawn. It looks like it's been vacuumed. Well worth the cost.

I bought the so called holy grail of Honda mowers-the mighty HRU 216 “Buffalo “ last week. My lawn was a bit thick after not mowing for 3 weeks. I had the deck set at its highest level, but it just couldn’t do it and burnt its clutch out in less than an hour. I had to complete the job with my old Ferrex mower I bought from Aldis for $169 - 10% of the price. Took it back for a full refund this morning. Dealer was very nice about it - can’t fault them.

I bought my HRX 217 HZA from a Shop like yours. They were out of the HYA which is what I really wanted. He gave me a bit of a discount to take the HZA so I jumped on it. And unlike the box stores, I got 0% financing directly from Honda through their credit card. The box stores won't take the Honda credit card, and I had to drive 20 miles to find a dealer that did. I bought a spare set of blades so I can drop a set to the local shop to be sharpened, I still have a set on the mower, and I just swap them whenever the sharpened ones are ready. Wouldn't you know it, that I occasionally do now have issues with my shoulder and the key start that the HYA doesn't have, has actually come in handy. 4 years later and the battery is still strong enough to start the mower.

Hi Carl. I've done a bit of research and I want to break into the HRX series for the lowest price possible. To my surprise, the hrx217vka is more expensive than the electric recoil vla model. Do you have any insight as to why that may be? Should I stay away from the electric recoil system and is that why the price is higher for the standard recoil?

Hi Carl, Excellent video ! I am in the market for a new mower to replace a non-self-propelled mower that must be at least 30 years old. I would actually prefer to stick with a push mower but they don't seem to make them anymore except for very low-end models with small blade diameters. I have 1000m2 to cut, so I need a good mower and I want something to last. What no one ever mentions is whether self-propelled mowers can still be pushed without damaging them? Or if pushing a mower that is supposed to be self-propelled creates additional "drag"? Of the mowers you present, is there one type of transmission (smart drive, select drive, or hydrostatic) that is going to be a more comfortable transition for me?

Need help please! I just bought an hrx217vya with the blade stop feature. I mowed with it for the first time today and it works greats but the blades would disengage periodically causing me to stop , press the yellow button and engage again. What could be the issue? The second question is if the throttle lever should go all the way forward? There is about an inch that it could move further but it stops near the rabbit picture. Please advise. Thanks

Bought a new Honda HRX217HZA (electric start, 21") gas hydrostatic w/roto-stop. Followed the manual (probably my 12th mower). Electric start worked twice, then battery appeared to be discharged (just like the maual said it would). Tried the pull start: not going to happen> would not budge. Thought could be a hydrostatic lock or cracked ring or frozen/locked blade clutch or ???Pulled the spark plug. engine spun easily. Put the plug back in, locked still. Since the mower didn't come with a charger, had to order one and still waiting. Would like to get the mower running. Any thoughts on why it is locking up? I did a search and found that model online at a big box store and in the reviews with 1 or 2 stars only, there were MANY others with the same issue. Also, even though it only ran for about 5 minutes, there was more engine vibration than I would have expected and the throttle surged the entire time. Any ideas; or, should I just return it? Thanks in advance.

I came across your video and made a decision of purchasing a Honda. It's a shame, you're not in Florida. I had nothing but issues with it, unfortunately. Purchase the top of the line unit HRX217 HZA (electric start) .... The electric start would work maybe 5% of the time, needing me to pull the rope, in which is sooooo hard to pull. Contacted the dealer and, they where able to replicate the issue. mind you this is the 2nd week... they gave me a new one and guess what?! same thing happened. They told me that its a bad Cam shaft, and I have to warranty it, and will have to wait for about 1 month. I ended up returning it. Am I just that unlucky? anyways, I'm still thinking of getting one without the electric start. Thanks for a great comparison guide.

In the market for a gas mower at the moment (really for my daughter), I always heard Honda were one of the best, but I have been finding just as many bad reviews, along with good ones. But who wants to spend well over $500 on a mower to have issues. Cheaper mowers, get what you pay for but residential mowers up to $1000.00+ and still having problems well that's crazy.

Should post a link of the differences between HRN & HRX series (mention 4:55) is it just the deck material, steel vs NeXite. If so, you could have just mentioned that and then reference the vid for more detailed info, along with link. Nevertheless, great quick explanation of the differences in model suffixes. And crazy there don't seem to be a local dealer such as yourself that sales Honda mowers, so can put my hands on it. Just the box stores and they are all on the top shelf...Why are lawn mowers on a shelf. I would think this is something a customer would at the very least kick the tire a bit before buying.

Just watched this video. I am thinking about the HRN216VLA. After watching your other videos it seems like the different models do start on the first pull and I am wondering if I could get by without the key start. If I found an independent dealer, would it be possible to try the pull start model so I can see if I can do it? Just figuring as time goes on, my shoulder is not going to be getting any stronger. My model mower is HRR216VKA.
Honda knows that it has an inherent fault with the rear wheels that rust & ruin everything prematurely
And they would not cover to fix my problem because it was out of warranty by a week
I am on a disability support pension for 25 years now & I bought the mower for the self-drive so I can mow up the inclines in my property
Honda super-seeded that model of mower quickly as it didn't want to sell a dodgy mower to its customers

I just don't get it I guess. Never understood why all the bells and whistles. I'm just trying to make the grass in the yard shorter after all. The last push mower I bought was in 2000. It was a Murray 20" cut with a Briggs & Stratton 3.5hp flathead, side valve, no frills engine and it's lasted 24 years and cost $99.00 brand new. If I had been smart at the time I'd have bought two of them and kept one new in the box all these years later. The engine on my old one still starts on the first pull, it's everything else on it that's shot. The deck is rotted out, the kill bale switch's cable broke after the first 5 years so I bypassed it and had a 1970's style then (the kind you shut off by using a screwdriver to ground out the spark plug). Honestly, I never minded that as even when it had that kill switch handle I bypassed it by slipping a zip tie around it and then sliding the zip tie around and down the handle when I was ready to kill it. In all those years besides changing the oil and plug out each season, I only went through 2 new air filters (since they were foam and you just washed them out and oiled them down each season), 1 new primer bulb and 2 new diaphragm gaskets. That's it. I think instead of wasting my money on one of these things I'll just see if I can't find a mower deck and just bolt that old Briggs to it and keep going.

5 years ago I started a small lawn care service as a supplement to my retirement and make some extra coin little did I know business would take off. I started out with a Toro Personal Pace that lasted 1 season so I bought another Toro Personal pace with a Honda Engine I got 2 seasons out of the deck the engine is still up and running on another deck so in 2019 when HRN216VKA Model hit the floors I purchased one It is now on it's 3rd season and still running like a champ only issue has been the wheels as they tend to wear quickly if you use them for light commercial/residential use. So I bought a new set of wheels and replaced them so whenever I go to replace them again I automatically order another set for spares, I change the oil and Air Filter once a month the blades, and spark plug I do twice a season and drive belt at the end of every season. Damn good mowers that Honda HRN has bought all my Stihl equipment because of its reliability. Well yesterday I bit the bullet once again and decided to spoil myself with a HRX217HYA I think I will use this one on my higher end customers yards and use the HRN on the harder to mow jobs. I have modified the HRN with a water bottle holder so I can keep hydrated out in this Texas Heat I used a water bottle holder from a mountain bike and riv nutted to the handle works awesome and don't have to walk back to the truck to get water.

I actually like the smart drive better I don't have to reach down and readjust a dial it. The smart drive is great want to go faster push down more need to go slower let off of it some. I think the perfect mower for me would be the VKA with "smart drive", a yellow button, and electric start as a commercial grade mower. Unfortunately it probably doesn't exist.
