We were on US 95 headed to Idaho and we missed our turn in Fallon Nevada. US 95 takes a left turn in downtown Fallon and we missed it and got on the "Loneliest Road" and it was getting dark. We kept driving along and something was just off. We started seeing Jackalopes along the road and it was getting colder and colder. Finally after about 50 miles there was an elevation sign, 4000 feet!!! This was all wrong and there was no gas station in sight and we were low on gas. Now it was getting kinda scary. We finally saw a sign and found a gas station in the dark. It was the only thing lit up in the dark. An Indian lady who was working the cash register smiled and said, "I guess you are lost". She said she got a lot of lost people who missed their turn. We were just relieved to get some gas. She said go north to Battle Mountain and you can go back to your highway. We thanked her and headed north. Lesson learned: Don't forget to turn left in Fallon on US 95. It will get real weird if you don't! We will never forget our experience on the Loneliest Highway but we are richer for the adventure and experience!

Sand Mountain is where I grew up camping, riding quads and sand buggies. Trying to race one of my brothers up the face of the hill and being scared out of my mind! We used to try to dig to China we would spend hours digging. Spent many Easters hunting for eggs in the sand, and tons of Halloweens going around to campers for candy and then partying as adults singing and dancing late into the night under the beautiful stars. Or going night riding and getting stuck lol! It's an absolutely unique and incredible work of nature and I miss it oh so much! Thanks for sharing

I used to work all over NV and grew quite fond of that "loneliest" road. Working as a consultant for the mining industry took me even further back in them thar hills. Always enjoyed it, simple precautions make the trip much more worry free. Legend has it that those circles drawn out on those petroglyphs were actually a native Americans depiction of that lake drying up. Great trip. Like you said:"So much history." See you on the next one.

I think the most telling detail for me was the bar/restaurant that used a diesel generator for power. That's definitely isolation!
The petroglyphs were very cool, and I'm thrilled that no one has damaged them.
I want to visit this place among many others when I replace my current vehicle with something newer. I love my 22-year-old car, but there are limits to where I can trust it. Thank you for showing me what I'm missing in the meantime!

It's not so lonely on Hwy 50 when you have Russ as a tour guide! You got to Sand Mountain at the perfect time--before the OHVs started buzzing all over and right as the sun started hitting the top of the dune. By the way, if you like petroglyphs, the Ridgecrest Petroglyph Festival is happening the 5th and 6th of November. Besides the festival there are some neat things to see in the area like the Trona Pinnacles. Happy Trails!

Thanks. Haven’t been there for 20 years. I was disappointed cause prior to doing “The Loneliest Road” I did Route 6 pulling a travel trailer Coming from Mono Lake to Utah in 1985. I remember watching a jet vapor trails from horizon to horizon for 40 minutes. Assuming they were going about 525 mph, that’s about 350 mile visibility horizon to horizon without a single car passing me for those 40 minutes. Going to do it again next year and I probably will find the traffic has grown in the past 37years along that stretch by a lot. I know where I live traffic has grown plenty.

Northern Nevada is something of a "Mineral Country" ... I'm sure you would like exploring the "MALPAIS", east of Gallup and south of Grants, New Mexico along Interstate-40. There are immense lavafields that cooled eons ago but the Spaniards could not cultivate these areas or raise cattle, so they called it "Malpais" (Good for nothing country). Did you know that Nevada has more mtn ranges than any other state. Nevada also has 360 + hot springs in the state, Being in the Great Basin, only a handful of rivers leave the state and reach the Pacific Ocean. The rest end up in a lake or a playa (sink). Lots of water underground in Nevada. Really enjoy your videos.

Awesome video, Russ! In regards to the petroglyphs, a lot of the dating of them, is guesswork. People that do this, carbon date things they find at dig sites, and go from there. There is a lot involved. In your previous video(Wendover) in the surrounding area, Archeologists believe there were people living around there over 13,000 years ago! Particularly at Hogup Cave! The Great Basin has a very long and ancient history! Thanks for the tour!
