  • Kane Lyden has worked at the Mid North Budgeting Service Trust in Kaikohe for over twenty years. She sat down with John and told him the cost of living crisis that’s been hitting her community hard for three years is the worst she’s ever seen.
‘How often do you see people who struggle?’ asked John.
‘Every day,’ she replied. ‘Every day.’
Northland, stunning yet struggling, consistently tops New Zealand’s deprivation index by nearly every measure. In the lead-up to Budget Day 2024, John Campbell and his camera operator Clint Bruce travelled to the North to uncover the challenges faced by locals such as Kane, and to explore how the Budget might impact their lives.

ABSURD. Landlords get $3bn in tax cuts, there is no comprehensive capital gains tax, no inheritance tax and no gift tax in NZ, so the rich are massively subsidised by the poor who cant even afford to live in NZ. It makes me sick to the stomach. A society is judged by how it treats its poor. The government will deliver nothing for the poor in NZ in the budget and has already reindexed benefits and made the disability benefit criteria tougher.

Reading the comments is sad. It’s apparently the governments fault. People need to take self accountability and responsibility before they start blaming everyone else for their problems. Look in the mirror first and be honest with yourself, don’t be a coward and blame the government, that is just pathetic.

Thank you for the work you do budgeting. It must break your heart every day. People are dying, literally. Not to mention the crime rate overall in New Zealand because our government doesn't care about the peasants.

Ask a local farmer if they will sell wholesale price meat and make cheap meat packs. Sure a lot of small framers will do that And Milk make you own cost of living because the big investors do not care and price will only go up

Wow 😯 I live in Auckland and yes the struggle is real and I can only imagine the struggles around New Zealand 🇳🇿 why can the government prioritise the worth of living compared to tax breaks foreign aid large cooperations where is this making Aotearoa better for the below and average person for many you spend between 5-6 days at work for work, leaving one day for family? Children spend up to 7 hours a day at school that’s a total of a working week, the home for most sits empty during these hours all this to pay for costs of living

Landlords paying mortgages have huge challenges. So is it interest rates making rents unreasonable. If so what can the government do to keep banks in check including the reserve bank because we need better products from better people in banks please.no rotten apples.
