  • "(Chapel Hill is) one of my favorite places on the planet!” - James Taylor
Chapel Hill, NC (March 14, 2022) - A new Visitors Center in the heart of Chapel Hill opens this week, featuring tourist information and recorded greetings from famous North Carolinians (both native and adopted) such as singer/songwriter James Taylor and Governor Roy Cooper.
The Chapel Hill/Orange County Welcome Center is located at 308 West Franklin Street, just blocks from its previous location in the Bentley Building. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with Saturday hours beginning July 1.
Central to the new space is a 10 ft. tall LED screen showcasing a recorded welcome message by James Taylor, who grew up in Chapel Hill and calls it one of his “favorite places on the planet”. In a nine minute video which includes a performance of the song, Taylor tells the story of events leading him to write “Carolina In My Mind,” penned while he was in London reminiscing about his beloved childhood home.
Taylor also provided the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau, which operates the Welcome Center, with an autographed album cover perfect for visitor selfies.
Singer-songwriter James Taylor was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1948 to Gertrude and Isaac Taylor. Taylor’s family moved to Chapel Hill when he was three years old. His father served as the Dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill medical school from 1964 to 1971.Taylor grew up playing music with his four siblings, Alex, Kate, Livingston, and Hugh.
In addition to Taylor’s video, the Welcome Center also features recorded greetings from:
    · North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a graduate of University North Carolina Chapel Hill
    · Author Sarah Dessen, novelist, resident and UNC alum. Two of her books were adapted into the 2003 film “How to Deal” with actress ‪@MandyMooreMM‬.
    · Comedian and resident ‪@OfficialLewisBlack‬
    · UNC Tar Heels Football Coach Mack Brown
    · Former UNC Tar Heels football player Phil Ford
    · Former UNC Tar Heels football player and resident Marcus Ginyard
    · Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger
    · Carrboro Mayor Damon Seils
    · Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver
    · Orange County Commissioner Chair Renee Price
Along with a continuing loop of photos and videos showing off the sights of Orange County, free materials are provided to help visitors better plan their time in the area.
In 2019 (pre-pandemic), nearly half a million visitors attended area attractions and tours.
    About the Welcome Center
The 4,000 square foot Welcome Center is in the heart of Chapel Hill at 308 W. Franklin Street, across the street from The Graduate Hotel. Limited onsite parking is available for guests. A nearby parking lot operated by the Town of Chapel Hill is located behind Chipotle Restaurant.
The Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau is a division of Orange County and is funded through the 3% occupancy tax charged for hotel stays in Orange County. The annual budget is $1.8 million.

James, I am not from Chapel Hill, but I’m from North Carolina, born and bred about 60 miles from Chapel Hill, on a tobacco/cotton farm. I am proud of our state and proud of a bunch of my folks that went to college in your hometown. It is a special town! Can anything beat that Carolina blue sky. Love your work. Always been proud that you are from NC!

My Grandmother was a librarian at Chapel Hill and lived on E. Franklin Street. Now it has gone full circle and my kids are there. It is a very special place for so many folks. For me as kid in New Orleans your song was a cue for me to head to Montreat. Now i live near there.

Living in the Morgan Creek neighborhood now and have woken to the water rushing down the creek behind our house for the past two mornings. Often think of you as we stare up the creek while standing on Elephant Rock🌅. The laughter of kids still rings out in the woods as they run and play down on Copperline.

I live about an hour east of Chapel Hill. Back in the mid 80s, I got married and we headed to the West Coast in a Ford Escort with all of our belongings and Madison, our dog. We had just gotten married a few days earlier and as I waved goodbye to my family and we began our five day trip to California, your song, “Carolina in My Mind” came on the radio. I started bawling. Turned out to be an omen of sorts. We had a disagreement three years later. He felt like he should be able to have a girlfriend, and I disagreed. Returned to my home and a few months later, I met my husband of almost thirty years now. Carolina never left my mind and I was often asked about our state while living in California. I worked for a famous person near LA and they would listen as I told stories about the land of the Longleaf Pine, the Old North State.

Love James and NC. I have lived here for 30 years, and l love it., but ..... Chapel Hill residents tried to ban leaf blowers ten years ago. Leaf blowers. Because of money, the bucolic town James advertises here hardly exists. Most any place can seem nice when you have money to spend. That's what remains of Chapel Hill these days, unless one is lucky to have family or friends to visit who recall a sweeter time.

Thanks JT. Never been to Chapel Hill yet.
My Dad was a professor at the University of Georgia Athens. Where I was born and raised.
Had most of your albums and got to see you in Knoxville Tennessee 1981 with the Section. Might try to catch you again as I hear you're coming this way.
