How to Fix Broken R2 Button on PS4 Controller (Cleaning Solution)

- In this video, i show you how to fix the broken R2 button on a PlayStation 4 (PS4) controller. The issue is whenever the button is pressed, the R2 button is not recognized; however, all the other buttons work. This is a really simple fix. Here are the time stamps for the video. Enjoy!

I spent the last two days searching for videos to figure out how to fix my r2 button tried so many videos even put tissue on the trigger etc, this was my last hope and there was a residue all over the motherboard . you saved me 60 bucks.

This even helps to fix circle, square buttons etc. Clean the connection and it should fix everything!

Oh, this make sense as to why I have seen people asking about ps4's in your newer comments. I remember I took apart my PS2 when I was like 10 years old and was never able to put it back together.

Lol same man. Fixed mine a few months ago and my mom saw me fixing it and joked that I'd just end up with a controller torn apart and in the trash like when I was a kid.

Yup, swapped the rubber piece and it worked.
Great vid Alex, will have to do this at some point for my R2 button. Have had the original two controllers since 2014 so no wonder they are starting to go lol. Have one that doesn't charge well, and the other which is perfect apart from this R2 issue.
One thing for people in, if you go to accessibility settings on PS4 you can remap any of the buttons. My R2 works, just very bad for racing games, so I just remapped R2 for R1 in the meantime!

Hey Alex, I hope you can help me: my dualshock 4 controller doesn't pair.. It only can go in pair modus and charge. If I press the ps button it does nothing. And also it randomly turns on my PS4. I putted the ds4 in my PC and looked which buttons worked. They all work except the ps button that keeps pressing. But the ps button doesn't looks like it pressing.. Do you know what I can do?
I got a JDM-040 after i replaced a new conductive film and cleaned up the button connections with Isopropanol (70%) all buttons are working now. But there is a verly very thin scratch on the button connections besides a contact on the motherboard (not on the contacts). So my problem is that L2/R2 is always active. I checked html5gamepad and it's always on 1,00 (active). Do you know how I can repair this? I have removed the silicon wafers and R1/L2 is still active without pressing something. Would appreciate it if you can give me an answer.

You didn't show how the film came off or went back on. Guess I'll have to figure it out.
(i just followed your yellow light video and fixed my power button) Now my L2 isnt working.. ive checked the film etc.. i have a spare controller but its v1 and the controller in question is v2, could i use the same film?
I don’t think so because the films are different and don’t connect at the same places as v2.

Need some help, my L2 doesn't work on my ps3 controller. I cleaned EVERYTHING inside the controller, put a piece of foamtape under the contact strip. Swapped the L2/R2 plastic trigger and gel pad for the contacts. Even left the L2 trigger off and pushed in the contacts manually and still no go. Solders look good and every other button works fine

Just so you know the PS4 controller also works on the PS3 so if you have a dual shock 4 you can use it
Hello guys i have a scratchy sides of my R2 maybe that's why its loose and even if i press down the wafer it doesnt work one of my wafer works with the L2 and the other one i have to press really hard but with the R2 both dnt work plzz reply
I could not run in assassin's creed iv black flag because of the triggers not going to 100%. You can glue a thin piece of plastic inside the triggers to fix that issue.

It doesn't need to be clean. The film you took out and cleaned was just slidening up so I just pulled the film down a bit with tweezers and my R2 is working again.
My brothers controller is swapping L2 and R2 randomly when pressing it be or the other. He tries to drive on gta with R2, but it will instead cause L2 to respond to this if you get what to m saying. We took it apart to fix a broken analog stick and that worked out, but now the triggers are swapping signals if he pushes the up a little bit. Anyone have a solution?
Just so everyone knows the acceleration being limited on turning is traction control
I've got 2 DS4'S thst both on the same day have started acting like the R2 button is being continously held down, even though it's not physically sticking. I disassembled both pads today and cleaned all the little silicon pad things and electrical contacts, but no dice. Both pads still behaving as if the R shoulder trigger is being pressed, even though physically the springs and buttons are in working order. I even tried cleaning where the conductive film connects to the motherboard. Really annoying, I thought I might be able to at least salvage one of them... Have you got any bright ideas for anything else I could try? EDIT: NVM, managed to sort it. I bought some replacement conductive membranes for them both and that fixed the issue. Well worth doing, a few pounds spent to fix it myself vs spending nearly £100 on 2 replacement pads.
I'll give yours a try to see if that helps mine, only had the controller 3 weeks and R2 as well as R1 were pressing by themselves.

Hey Alex, I have a similar problem. My L2 button is ALWAYS activated, I already took the thing apart, cleaned and checked everything, even changed the button foil from another DS4 just like you, and I still have the same problem :/. Even when I take the button AND the white rubber thing under the button completely off it is still activated. I am really losing my sh*t over this. Do you happen to have an idea how I could fix 😅

Yea it could. I would try to clean the entire film, and also the copper connection between the motherboard and the film.
Hey bro. I have the same issue, I've opened my controller and removed my R2 button and also pad under it, but it still acts like its being pressed. Did you try this method of cleaning the film? and did it work for you?

hey alex. i have tried exchanging pads, cleaning the connection points though its clean only, even tried a new conductive film on left side, but L2 still does not give any response. i am at loss of ideas now!

Alex So listen and see if u can help. So when I try turning the controller on it’s won’t so I pull it down and went inside and when my hand was touching the green surface my PS4 on screen was just doin a lot of stuff on screen lie the censor was goin off and on like idk?
@@CornInMyPoop you might have been shorting out the buttons by touching it, but that shouldn't happen so easily. Maybe you might need to clean your motherboard. you might have a defected motherboard, but I'm not sure. I can't really help you out, sorry.
Alex it’s oki man. I was able to clean it up but my right stick keep goin upward in games. It’s something with the stick for sure but Owell thx for tha help

Check the motherboard. Maybe there is a trace that is damaged.

Okey here is my problem, i broke my ps4 Controller in half sometime ago when crash bandikoot triology came out, i put IT back together and i worked fine until last weekend, suddenly the L2 is activated all the time, and then R2, i tok the Controller apart and everything looks fine, but i removed the gummi activating the triggers beneath l1/l2, r1/r2, cleaned the circet board that activates the buttons including L and R buttons, but IT did not work, i also tried playing a game while i removed the gummi and experimented but no mather what i did L2 and R2 was still activated so i think i f*** up the motherboard of the Controller? Any tips? Yeah im about to buy a new controller😂👌

It's not bad taking it apart once you know where the 4 tabs are. Even if you break the tabs itll hold together fine from the screws.

Yep. Near 100% pure alcohol concentration is best. You may get it as ethanol or dehydrated alcohol.
