I thought it was just the opposite. It's more likely that she was wondering if he really was a bisexual, rather than him being a heterosexual and was just experimenting (in the hedonistic 70's) because of the artistic underground places he hung around as a young man in the hedonistic 70's (even then, it was overwhelmingly women). Bowie later explained that's exactly what and how it was, and that he had no regrets nor have any desire to deny or cover it up. Then in 1983 Bowie publicly announced that he's "Totally Heterosexual"(probably to ward of men, lol), and he's had 2 long term relationships with women (early 80's Susan Sarandon, late 80's Melissa Hurley) before meeting Iman in 1990 soon after breaking up the engagement with Hurley. Of course, we all know that David had been in a monogamous relationship with Iman ever since, until he died.
Bowie claimed he was heterosexual once in a Playboy interview, yes, but later in life he also indicated he was bisexual in an interview with Jonathan Ross. Bowie always preferred keeping his sexuality ambiguous, as he didn't like the concept of being labelled, especially in such a fluid thing as sexuality. Perhaps he was bisexual, then heterosexual, then bisexual - perhaps he was bisexual all along - perhaps he was gay, as he said in an interview in the 60's, then bisexual the rest of his life - sexuality is fluid, and Bowie was well aware of this.
@@idiot685 Didn't he once say he was a "closet heterosexual"?! I think part of his "I'm gay" announcement was to shock people, although I'm sure he did dabble a bit at that time. But he was a bit of a lothario from a young age - that speaks louder than anything else.
He never ever was any such thing as "bisexual", let alone gay.
Melizma Tea he had to pretend to be straight for a period of time because he kept on being pestered about it for so long and he said he felt like no one was even listening to the records anymore. He had to go back in the closet for a while, that's why he said he was straight in a few interviews in the 80s-90s. Also, that quote is so misquoted it's horrendous. The full quote is this: "It was a mistake to come out in America as it affected my sales." But people keep on shortening it to "it was a mistake to come out."

@@peanutgallery2417 I read way before it was in his wikipedia page under the sexuality subsection. I guess it was from a Rolling Stones interview. That's all I know but he declared his heterosexuality later in the 80's any way. I don't know about the exact statement though as I said I read it in his wiki page.
@@w.3009 idk man, it's just hard to believe a random youtube comment (citing a wikipedia article they read years ago) when i've seen numerous sources of him saying, even in his old age, that he is bi, or at least queer. and that his music hints to it. and that biographies of him hint to it. and that he seems very persistent on it. and that his overall image certainly suggests it.

@@chri5o317 I think this perception is an artefact of the selection process of media over time where slowly more and more of the bad stuff is filtered out in favour of the good, leading to an inflated perception of certain characteristics of the past like articulation or outward presentation or even the quality of music.

You can get the best of him by being gentle and soft with him, but if you scratch too much on his back, he gets his claws out and reminds you that you can't catch everything about him and control him.

RIP Mavis Nicholson , who died Sept. 2022 aged 91. One of Bowies best interview's. You can tell that he was enjoying the interview until the question on bisexuality - then he becomes more defensive, although never disrespectful or rude .

Semolina Pilchard yes, he was also too polite to correct presenters when they got his name wrong. At one point when he was asked how to pronounce it he told them they could pronounce it how ever they liked.

Best interview of David Bowie 've ever seen. Nicholson was very respectful and asks "deep" questions. David Bowie honoured that with openess and sympathy.

true he is annoyed, because at that time (in the process of conluding his divorce) it was not a nice subject. But you can't deny there was a time when that sort of question and the nswer would bring him a special status. Plus that is who he was, and he used that in his characters creations --public persona. So nothing wrong, and she did not insist.

+Mithrandir when Jonathan Ross asked him he was still abit evasive but couldn't stop Ross' question. I don't think I saw him discuss it much in interviews - not that I'm much interested in it & I still think people want others to be binary sexually. Also, nice to see an interview without a whopping crowd.

Now it would be seen as presumptuous to ask searching questions on a television show. The host provokes a series of jokes for the studio audience to laugh at, the guest is asked about their next tour/book, and no one is any the wiser. Mavis Nicholson was unusual even then as a sympathetic confidant with whom celebrities could be honest without compromising themselves.

A gentleman and a gentle man. Touching to see what a contradictory mixture of confidence and nervousness he was at this stage. He was obviously a very private man who didn't enjoy interviews but Mavis Nicholson's non-threatening style seemed to bring out the best in him. For contrast, watch Russell Harty's interview with Bowie - it is so inept, patronising and disrespectful to the great man, it sets your teeth on edge!

You know it's funny, when Russell Harty died I totally swallowed all the glowing plaudits he received from the great and the good about what an amazing TV interviewer he was. It's only recently, watching his interviews on You Tube, that I realise what a patronising, over-rated numpty he was! I suspect his big career at the BBC owed a lot to his promotion by the gay mafia there.
+glamdolly20 no not true. Harty was well respected in the UK during 70s and 80s. His interview with Bowie is fantastic as both he and Bowie make fun of each other and egg each other on. Looking back at old clips of him, as we are able to do thanks to You Tube, I don't think his reputation as a great interviewer holds up at all. The great David Bowie clearly didn't rate him either and I'm astonished you think he did, after watching that toe curling interview Harty did with him back in the 'seventies. It was Harty who didn't get it - he really thought Bowie was a flash in the pan performer and at one stage even asked him if he felt threatened by the success of the Bay City Rollers! It's a shame about the "are you REALLY bisexual" part, shows some of the arrogance of the time, but apart from that it's a wonderful interview! It takes skill to be able to be able to draw someone like David Bowie out a bit. Even in that part about his bisexuality she still remained respectful and moved on from the question, unlike some interviewers today would do. What a talented lady!

I’m bi and people ask me if I’m actually just gay and just don’t want to admit I’m gay all the time. When I tell you I’m bi, I’m BI. I’m not gay or straight. I like both, I’ve caught feelings for both. I don’t know how and I don’t know why but I can’t help it.
It’s a shame cause people still have that ignorance. Especially towards bisexual men, if they love women but also love men oh they HAVE to be gay. It’s very irritating.. and bi women get it the other way around, they’re mostly seen as straight. Why can’t people just accept someone sexuality for what it is and stop trying to change it.

Such a gorgeous man inside and out
His clothes are amazing. The way he looked and dressed matched his music. He was a visual artist as well as a musical artist in that way. I guess that's generally true of the great rock stars.
This interviewer is one of the better ones I have viewed talking with Bowie. She gives him time to speak, asks questions that bring out interesting answers and doesn't use the whole thing as a massive ego trip. The worst interviewers won't shut up and speak over the interviewee as they fondly imagine it's all about themselves rather than the subject. Granted this interviewer is a bit forgettable but it is the subject that's supposed to shine!
I agree Hannah, but when you look at the likes of Graham Norton having a couch full of guests on at once, each waiting for HIS/HER turn to speak, Mavis DID do a brilliant job. David was allowed to shine, because of the way she treated him and the interesting questions she asked him. Not the 'what's your favourite colour, David?' Interviews full of useless sh*t. She gave him a chance, he grasped it with both hands and yes, he shone.
Interviewers were very much like Mavis Nicholson. They actually allowed their guests to talk. Probably the best interview he ever gave. Amazing given he lived and worked for another 37 years and did so much. But no other interview he gave in the next three decades plus comes close to this.

This is a good interview on the whole - much better than the likes of the Graham Norton/Alan Carr style of today.

Only through Isolation, do you begin to discover yourself. You are at the height of your creativity when you are in Isolation.
He has also said that to be a writer, you have to be a social animal. You can't create in a vacuum.

Normally when a celebrity goes I have no real reaction. Sure, it is terrible when someone dies, but it happens all the time. But when David Bowie died, it truly shocked me. Man was a legend, rest in piece David Bowie

+Stephen Fermoyle I can relate w/ you, though it was in HS in the 70s when most of all of my art projects were Bowie themed. I was fortunate (and determined) to actually give him an india ink drawing I made of him at a 1978 Chicago concert. I got his autograph a few years later at a nightclub. Indeed, he will always be in our hearts.

Great interview, her gentle but probing style got him to open up. He seems quite shy and nervous but so charming and articulate.
I really miss chat shows that are not overblown bullshit. I need a few glasses of wine to endure the style now where the guest has to try to get a word in edgewise in between the hosts stupid jokes and inflated ego.
This informal style is so interesting and stands up to scrutiny even now 37 years later.
I notice how Mavis called the movie "The man who came to earth" it was "The man who fell to earth" ,David was too polite to correct her.

@@strumbolli that was Russell Harty 3 years earlier, who was the interviewer representing the BBC. It was an interview which Bowie refused to reschedule to accomodate the broadcaster's request to allow them to show live coverage of the mourners at Franco's funeral. Harty's cynical interview style was obvious and resulted in Bowie correcting him, foregoing his usual polite manner with interviewers. The fascist dictator's british sympathisers got no live show, thanks to Bowie! :)

Mavis Nicholson the great but now retired Welsh TV interviewer doing what she did best. Allowing the interviewee to breath and expand via thoughtful and insightful questions. I grew up with this womans fantastic lilt on Welsh TV in the seventies and eighties. I have seen a tonne of Bowie interviews this is the best for me, two superb speaking voices. A joy. RIP David

I've been watching a lot of old David Bowie's interviews and most of them were uncomfortable because the interviewer seemed so judge mental of him. However this woman seemed very warm and understanding of Bowie. I loved this. He's a very articulate and confident speaker with a calmness to him. I can listen to him talk for hours!
I've never seen an interviewer as lovely as this woman. She drew Bowie out and asked him deep questions while still being respectful. When he seemed uncomfortable about the sexuality question, she backed away.

To hear him sing, to listen to his words is special but just to have been in his presence must have been so good just because he is...because he was...so special. I miss him just being in the world at the same time as me. I was lucky enough to have been in existence at the same time as him in this world.
He was of this world yet beyond this world. So well-spoken, so aware, so able. His love for Iman, his children and his craft is / was pure, genuine... True.
The world lost more than it knows when he died. I miss his spirit and his being.

This is the best interview I've ever seen with David Bowie. Many kudos to Mavis Nicholson for revealing what might be the closest thing to the real David Bowie.
4:08 Him talking about love makes me think about his love with Iman. She says that part of her left with him when he died (it’s crazy it’s been 6 years now) and the photos of them show what real love looked like.
What an unassuming young man. He gave some pretty intelligent answers, was quick witted with the questions Mavis sprung on him ( assuming he wasn't given a list of questions beforehand,) and was honest when speaking about his private life. Let's face it, we, as fans of a celebrity, can have an insatiable appetite for knowledge on our favoured star's personal life, which MUST be such an intrusion, a total stranger (not Mavis-she was more into sensible and serious stuff) demanding to know any amount of trivia on David's private life. What right do we have? He (David) was charming throughout the interview.
I’ve always found David Bowie’s voice not only very sexy, but also soothing. His voice can have an affect on me like asmr. Not only his singing but also hearing him talk in interviews. If he’d ever done an audiobook I’d listen to all of it even if I wasn’t interested in the book itself. Just the sound of his sultry voice soothes and/or tingles me. I wish he was still around.

This is one of Bowie's finest interviews. Mavis Nicholson was the right interviewer asking the correct questions calmly and as though it was a conversation between them rather than in front of cameras. The questions appear unscripted as the delivery of questions is calm. Bowie has returned to the UK in the wake of the release of his final Berlin LP 'Lodger' and I suspect 'Boys Keep Swinging' was riding up the charts as the lead single at the time or at least about to. I remember this period very vividly as Melody Maker had issued a 'Book of Bowie' publication in June 1978 detailing nearly every aspect of Bowie's musical career to date and of course mentioning that famous declaration in the early 70s regarding Bowie's sexuality. What I admire about this interview with Nicholson is Bowie's honesty - he was a master at PR of course.

Everyone’s so focused on the interviewer asking about his sexuality, but can we take a moment to appreciate how great the rest of it was. He has such a calming voice and such interesting answers to her questions. Also the lady seemed to be like a great person besides that one part.
I always thought Mavis Nicholson was an excellent interviewer, very underrated, she asks intelligent questions and shows a great deal of empathy.

What an artist. What a man. Watch at six minutes in, she tries to question him, to belittle his sexuality, he shuts her down carefully and politely then carries on being rather ethereal and deep in his answers... Like it’s nothing. Incredible.
