I actually like him in interviews. He is engaging when he is being asked questions that engage him, and is indifferent or spaced out otherwise. We treat actors (and artists in general) as if they are our toy monkeys. It's not enough that they create art, they have to entertain us everywhere else. The have to promote. They have to please us. They have to be likable. They have to fit our expectations. And if we feel like they are faking it, we get angry for them being fake. But if they act true to themselves and that happens to piss on our expectations, we call them on that too. It's like, all this guy ever wanted was to act. And he does it pretty damn well. He never signed up to be a people pleaser, why criticize him over that? I wish all actors did the same. They really don't owe us anything beyond doing a good job at playing their roles.

I actually like him in interviews. He is engaging when he is being asked questions that engage him, and is indifferent or spaced out otherwise. We treat actors (and artists in general) as if they are our toy monkeys. It's not enough that they create art, they have to entertain us everywhere else. The have to promote. They have to please us. They have to be likable. They have to fit our expectations. And if we feel like they are faking it, we get angry for them being fake. But if they act true to themselves and that happens to piss on our expectations, we call them on that too. It's like, all this guy ever wanted was to act. And he does it pretty damn well. He never signed up to be a people pleaser, why criticize him over that?
I wish all actors did the same. They really don't owe us anything beyond doing a good job at playing their roles.

I have seen him in extended, thoughtful discussions online. He is an intelligent and reflective man who clearly hates having to go from TV show to TV show to promote the movies that he loves.

I feel for him. Vapid conversation is difficult for introverts. Also, introverts need time to come up with replies and don't tend to be quick-witted. I've noticed in other interviews when he's left alone with time to talk about his acting or characters, he does just fine, and his sharing is deep. I'd so love to have a one-to-one conversation with him.
