Do you have any idea why this happened? I want to make this work. I love the technique and look!

Maybe that's the right answer!
1.
The cause is that the clay was not moist enough.
↓
Try rolling the clay on a wet towel when making the strings.
Spray a little water on the clay when gluing the strings together.
Another possible solution is...

The shrinkage of the clays is too different.

Use a different combination of clays.

Not enough pressure was applied.

When gluing clays together.
When stretching to make a board
Apply firm pressure.

Drying was done too quickly.
