Whitechapel "Hickory Creek" from "The Valley." Directed by Mathis Arnell - www.naughtymantis.com
    "Hickory Creek" lyrics:
It’s so hard to let go
You can hear me but I’m invisible
But if you dig out your eyes, maybe pain will subside
The worst that could happen is you never see me again
But the worst is yet to come, my friend
This path I walk is comforting
But now I’m left to sing this song alone
    I’m fading faster now
    I left so long ago
You never noticed I was gone
Now that you don’t have eyes, maybe now you’ll realize
Within your own head, you’re creating these lies
For what it’s worth, you’re still beautiful
But beauty lies within the eyes
This path I walk is comforting
But now I’m left to sing this song alone
    I’m fading faster now

When I first listened to this album, I was really curious about the meaning behind the songs. I found articles that explained how these songs were about Phil's personal life. Like the song Black Bear is about his step dad, who he blames for his mother's death.

The Valley is a reference to the part of Hardin Valley (west of Knoxville, Tennessee) where vocalist Phil Bozeman grew up. Set against this backdrop, he approaches his subject matter unflinchingly, building upon everything that came before, making it clear that he has survived that which he was forced to endure and is not afraid to confront it. “Phil has been upfront in his lyrics in the past about hardships he endured in his life as a child, and I believe with this record we tried to paint a better picture of that,” says guitarist Alex Wade, who alongside his bandmates, stands 100% behind everything their vocalist has to say. “I feel our music is Phil’s release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well.”

Real Metal fans who are true to form, will respect this growth from Whitechapel. This particular bands evolution perfectly portrays that of a man who has seen horror and struggled with dealing with that horror in real life. Phil Bozeman's story is real. The feelings are real. This music is real. Yes, we would all most likely prefer the old Whitechapel, but folks, this is what true musicianship is all about. Pay attention and you will see how this man, this band, and this music has grown and matured in the depths of struggle. Through hate, love and pain. Don't worry, I don't think Whitechapel will ever part with their roots but don't turn your back on them because of this change in their music. This has been a wonderful adventure following this band since day one and we couldn't ask for more.

Its that struggle grunge that arises inside of me like a swelling of a planet just before IMPLODING with THUNDROUS QUAKING, the other side of the universe would hear and feel it. even better, like when Neo swelled the walls of the hallway in the Matrix. That WOULD BE THE FORCE I WOULD FEEL, COMING DOWN UPON ME, IF I WERE TO LOSE MY MOTHER OR CHYNA. I JUST LOST MY GRANDMOTHER 2 YEARS AGO, at 105 years of age, that FIGHTER. AND I AM JUST NOW GREAVING. BECAUSE AN OLD FLAME TOOK ME DOWEN THROUGH SOME DARK PLACES AFTER USING ME TO HAVE AN AFFAIR. just as granny was dying, so I WAS GREAVING THaT SITUATION BEFORE SHE DIED AND JUST NOW GOT OVER THAT TO NOW GRRIEVE MY DEAREST GRANDMOTJHER. My dad committed suicide soon after his birthday and I couldn't be there to hug him or say goodbye. I know I was the first to find that out, and my mom is back in prison for her recurring drug addictions. This song, combined with Bring Me Home, both hit REALLY close to home. I love whitechapel and their brutality, but this song has now become one of my favorites, i can feel and hear the difficult honesty and emotion coming forth. I really feel they have matured and come a long way. I dont care if anyone hates about clean vocals, sometimes its just what a song needs. Cheers to whitechapel ! They did a wonderful job on the new album.

Never thought a Whitechapel music video would leave me crying, but this one hit me hard, especially at the end. Amazing song, thank you Phil for opening up and be brave enough to show the darkest times in your life.
I can't wait for this new album

Whitechapel is awesome and honestly I'm super glad to see so much love in the comments, you don't see that much when metal bands try something new and push themselves out of their comfort zone

The song released less than two months after I lost my mother. Hearing it for the first time, I cried my eyes out. It will always carry a huge weight for me. I will always hold it dear to my heart, as cheesy as it might sound, but it definitely helped me cope with life after everything we've been through. Heh, the song never failed to hit me emotionally, there are tears coming out as I'm writing this.

God bless you Phil. I won’t pretend to know the pain and heartache you’ve endured. Thank you for sharing your story with all of us. As someone in law enforcement, this video chokes me up. Your mother is a victim of a health crisis, and by proxy, you. I don’t want another soul to pass, or for another family to be broken in a single night. She’s resting now, and I’m sure she’s proud of you.
