Scotty is literally the “dream come true mechanic”. How many other mechanics would NOT use a noticeable engine ticking, a little oil seepage or other such benign auto symptoms to scare customers into paying thousands of $$$? Damn near ALL other mechanics WOULD! Our Scotty truthfully says not to worry, you don’t need them fixed until possibly much later. You just don’t find that any more!!
I liked the older 1999 Cherokee with the I-6 that I gave to one granddaughter for HS with 174,000 miles. At school they called it the Beast and it was traded in after HS when it had 256,000 miles.
Only service items was oil, filters, and brakes.

@@harveyhankerson8359 I have a 2004 honda pilot with 383,000 miles and Original drive train. Never had to do anything major other than struts.
Just normal maintenance. Oil, brakes, and stuff like that. Closing in on 400,000 and I expect it to go over half a million.
I really do love Honda. It still has a lot of power. I've towed thins with it many times and drove it across the country once.

My dad used to have a 2002 WJ Grand Cherokee Limited V8 when I was a kid, and it had some of the most comfortable seats of any car I had ever sat in.
I remember when we went to pick it up back in July 2010, and from the moment 10-year-old me sat in it for the first time, I was in heaven as the seats were just oh-so-comfy, and I felt myself almost sinking into them with just how soft and comfortable they were, they were more like big comfy armchairs than actual seats! 👌
We even went on a caravan holiday in it to Great Yarmouth in August 2010, and I remember watching one of my Top Gear DVDs on the way there on the aftermarket DVD headrests we had installed in it. The V8 also had plenty of power for towing our caravan on the 127-mile journey to the campsite, even if it did make the car a TREMENDOUS gas hog…
Yes the seats are great... I don't know why the new ones have to be so hard & flat.
2004 was the last model year for the second generation Jeep Grand Cherokee. I still have the promotional video of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I can't believe I still see some of these on the road today. Those were the good old days.
Why can't you believe that? These cars will run forever. Almost. Except in the rust belt ☺My 2000 WJ diesel is just as good as new.
I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee that I drive all the time.
Used to have a ‘99 XJ, loved that thing, most reliable American car I ever owned.
My dad had one of these. A 2000 Limited with the 4.7 V8. Only thing that failed was the ignition lock cylinder. He ended up trading it in at around 130k miles for a 2009 Ford Expedition. Needed something bigger for long trips with little kids. Great vehicle.
130k with no issues isn’t exactly a miracle. I’ve got a 2001 Ford F-250 150k only thing I’ve replaced is a couple batteries 😂
I’ve owned a series of these. My 96 has 374,000 miles. My 03 has 218,000. The knock can also be the distributor shaft. The leak can be the rear main, which is serviceable by removing the pan and rear main cap. All mine are 4 wheel drive. The transfer case has to be resealed when they leak, as well as the rear pinion seal. All easy. The power steering pumps only last about 80,000 miles. Change the hose when the pump fails. The transmissions last over 300,000 miles. And usually it is the governor/modulator, pressure switch, and shift solenoids- all serviceable by removing the pan. Occasionally the output speed sensor fails making it shift hard. You can buy them cheap. Use them up. And get another one. If the head gasket starts seeping at 300,000 miles- just take the seal out of the center of the radiator cap and run with no pressure. No more leak. Just turn off the aircon if stuck in heavy crawling traffic in summer.
These are pretty much indestructible. Fixes are cheap. And yes- I have never replaced an injector.
Don’t forget to change the brushes in the alternator and fuel pump every 200,000 miles and they will never let you down.
They easily make 400,000 miles.

We have a 2001 with 222k and just replaced the water pump..100% with antifreeze and took about 4hrs..I'm no mechanic either so it could have taken less..
Fr man it's very easy to work on if you ever need to as well.
And the TJ Wrangles.
Had a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 Limited that reached 337,596 miles when sold. Loved that thing; great power, relatively reliable, super comfortable. Most comfortable seats I've ever sat in; been in a TON of cars as a mechanic. WJ limited seats are the hands-down best.
Thanks Scotty! I have one...1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0 2wd with 117,000 miles in great condition inside and out. I always knew it was a great vehicle but after watching your video I now feel justified in keeping it for so long. Recently I put some money into it for new brakes, rear differential, control arms and tires but I think it is money well spent. Runs and drives great. No oil leaks. It's my wife's daily driver and we also use it for road trips. Keeping it till the new car market returns to "normal" and I decide what to replace it with. Thanks again, you are a legend!
Hey Scotty, I have a 1996 Buick century wagon with 98,000 miles. Great service record. An Air Force vet bought it new off the lot and maintained it rigorously at the age of 71. Passed away at 83 and went to his daughter who put less than 10,000 miles in 9 to 10 years. Sat in a lot for 3 years before I bought it. Having some minor cosmetic stuff fixed atm that happened while at the lot. But it's a real gem. Engine runs so smooth. Would love it if youd review it some time. I live in Ohio. Would love to show it in all its glory and then track down the family to show them his hard work lives on. The information I already have on him (orginal owner) is pretty cool. I understand you probably gets thousands of these a day. But if this reaches you, I'd love to make it happen. If not, thanks for the thousands you've saved me over the years.
I owned a '99 2 door JEEP Cherokee w/ a 4 ltr. Straight 6 back in the day. That V6 had huge amounts of low end torque & plenty of power through out the power band. Lots a fun driving but man the gas gauge went down as fast as the speedo went up.😲😲😲
I’ve got an ‘01 XJ Cherokee that was massively neglected by the previous owner and that aisin Warner automatic shifts perfectly and the Jeep 4.0, an AMC design, is completely bulletproof. I call her old reliable. I can leave it for weeks, walk out, and it fires right up. Every time.
My 1993 ZJ had 260,000 miles when I obtained it, and 10,000 miles on the engine that my Dad rebuilt. I put 41,000 miles on it on my own, and it was as reliable as a Toyota. And, in winter, it was an impermeable tank, that my co-worker even envied.
I still own her, and even named her "Bonhomme Richard".

Had a 95 with the 318 Chrysler. That was a great little engine.
I had a 2004 Jeep like that back in the day. I would go in parking lots that had a lot snow and that thing ran through the snow with no problems. It was a 4x4 and they're hard to find in good shape
i currently have a 00 4.7 wj, Love mine. it is a love hate relationship but mostly it does its main job, to drive and get me from work to home and some medium duty towing done.
That 4.0 inline 6 is bullet proof,, been driving my 99 since new, no problems ,, ever

Have a 99' Jeep Cherokee Sport 5spd with the same engine. Those 4.0L could run forever. The certainly made them much better back then. The only thing that sucks about it living in the northeast is rust.😫
I have a 96 Cherokee 165000ish on it,was given to me "free" when I bought the original owners house. Had a ticking to it sounded a little quieter than this-put 10w30 smoothed out and I don't hear it anymore. But will change the injectors to- great video.
Had a 2012 Grand Cherokee. I tell people it spoiled me for any other new vehicle I could ever buy. All I did was change the oil every 5000 miles. I traded it in with 183000 miles on it, and it still had the original brakes and rotors on it, and they were still good. Outside of two sets of tires, I never had to do anything else to it in the eight and a half years I owned. Every time I took it to the dealer, they said nothing needed to be done to it. It was in great shape.

My 04 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 is still running great. Have yet to get that Jeep stuck, I've tried.
I had a 79 AMC sprit straight 6.. loved it. I figured if it was good for the post office it was great for me

When I lived in Iowa the majority of the vehicals broken down along the interstate system were Jeeps, mostly the Grand Cherokees.
I see ford's or crystlers
There are probably more 2004 or older Jeep Cherokees out on the road still than any other car. The I6 engines last forever and trannies are good too. Also parts are cheap and easy car to work on. Doubt that'll be the case with newer models. 2005+ WKs were build way worse and not as mechanic friendly. Even worse with newer models.
Last reliable car for me? 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88, 307 V8. 267,000 miles of trouble free operation. Flat tires were the worst thing that ever happened. The only reason it was given away was the severe rusting and water leaks all over. And it wasn’t the greatest mpg for the longer commutes that started happening with work.
WJ grand cherokees are excellent vehicles. If you get an overland with the 4.7 v8 high output they are excellent and high end for their time. Chrysler bodies and electronics never were the best but their drivetrains are pretty damn good
The best ride I ever owned. That 4.0 is WAY underpowered, but it is BULLETPROOF. I've owned many Jeeps over the years. A labor of love is the best descriptor I can come up with for all BUT that one. I ordered a 2004 while stationed in Iceland from Military Auto Sales and had it waiting for me in S Dakota when I PCS'd in. The 4.0 is alright in the TJ until you put meatier tires on them.
I got one, it's one of most reliable vehicles we got, over 240k miles and it's still running strong.
Way better than the modern ones!

I bought one of these 2003 Grand cherokees new in 2003 when I graduated college. My family drove it til about 140,000 miles. At 50,000 miles the cruise control switch broke. I think a oxygen sensor went bad around 70,000. And something with the air conditioning broke around 80,000. We never beat on it. Took it light off roading. Was a good car otherwise. Sold it when gas shot up in price around 2009 and got a honda civic. It was the last American brand car I've had.
Owned one very similar to this one in the past. I sold it with 260,000. I remember going for joy rides in the country side and I got alittle to confident and got stuck in a ditch in about 2 feet of snow. With one wheel in the air and bald tires my jeep got me out of the ditch. Idk how I did it but that is one of the best memories I have of it. I definitely miss the joy rides I had in it and I definitely want another jeep in the future.
My father has a '93 Cherokee with the same 4.0 straight six. It's had an "unhealthy engine noise", as he says, for the last ten years, and it still runs almost perfectly- just has trouble starting because there's a problem with the computer.
I was worried the laces hanging from his upper jacket were going to get grabbed by the fan pully and create a serious situation

2007 ford edge 225k miles never an engine code, problem. Replaced a battery and alternator. Plus very comfortable and over 20mpg going fast down the highway

I got 325,000 miles on my 2001 Grand Cherokee. I'm the only owner and I've always run synthetic oil in it. I want to take it to 500,000. I change all fluids at the recommended intervals and do most of the maintenance and save a lot of money over going in for service. Service departments rip you off.
Those 4.0L I-6 engines are nice. My neck of the woods of Az people like them, but usually seem to prefer the HO 4.0L.

They had the same great Chrysler transmissions also during the Daimler period. New hood struts are almost for free ☺But those headlight lenses are horrible.

I have been DYING for the day that Mr. Scotty Kilmer posts about the beautiful WJ Grand Cherokee :") too bad mine is sitting in the driveway covered in snow, waiting for new spark plugs this weekend. I wouldn't say very reliable... I've had 10 breakdowns in my 5 years of driving and 8 of them were on my WJ in the past year. Don't buy em from the rust belt. That was my first mistake.
The 4-liter AMC this is derived from is quite possibly the best in line 6 ever made.
The fj40 and some of the BMWs and jaguar straight 6s are pretty spiffy.(not including RB and 2\1jz or the z car L series)
But these things are absolute torque monsters and run for 300,000 no problem with total neglect!

I had a 2001 with a 4.7L V8. Mechanically it was great, but all the comfort features in it like power windows, heat and heated seats failed. The window regulators would break often. The blend doors for the heat were famous for failing.
Electrical problems are pretty common in older Jeeps for sure. Think lot of people still like driving older Jeeps because engines and trannies last. Also easy to work on and parts are cheap.
Always wanted a Grand Cherokee but definitely not any of the newer ones.

I enjoyed my '97 Grand Cherokee Limited WAY better than the '02 we replaced it with. 5.2 / 4.7 v8's respectively. The first gen was way better in snow (live in WNY) and I had to replace the stupid wishbone joint 3x in the '02 as they changed the suspension set up (locates the rear axle). Both were OK but I couldn't take the fuel economy with the miles I drive. An RDX replaced the last Jeep - No regrets.
I loved my 03 wj . With the good old 4.0 never left me stranded. 6.5 inch lift 35s , my beloved weekend warrior.
My 99 did. The little magnet fell off of the cam sensor. Easy fix, but it was dead until I figured it out. I had an intermittent problem with the crank sensor too, which I had to get a new one. Other than that, the 4.0 is pretty legendary-- and I'd love to have one with a manual transmission.
I hated that the DaimlerChrysler merger didn't work out too. It amazes me how many people have either forgotten about that merger or never even knew about it during that time. German companies are known to cut their losses if something isn't working out though, which explains why Germany has been such a strong country financially in recent decades. I still like to imagine what might have been had Mercedes-Benz never sold Chrysler. Chrysler vehicle quality really was on the upswing during the Daimler-Chrysler era.
Golen engines makes a turn key drop in 4.0 that has been stroked with a 4.2 crank and bored 30 over to 4.6 that makes 270hp and over 300 ft/lbs of torque. $$$ Though! , or you could build your own I6 Stroker, lots of aftermarket support for it.
Opinions on Chevy Trailblazers, GMC Envoys, Buick Rainiers, Saab 9-7Xs, etc for reliability?
Best combination with that engine is the Cherokee Sport much lighter and plenty of power one of the best vehicles I ever had

I’ve got the same vehicle. Really like it, but I have had a problem since I got it a few years ago. The main problem is if it sits running for like 10 minutes, it runs horrible until you get moving. HORRIBLE. All kinds of misfire codes. Get going, and it runs great. Kill the light, and it doesn’t come back until it sits running, or occasionally if you start it up warm.
My 98 Dakota with 4 cyl jeep engine did same thing. Changed computer, problem never came back. Was told computer needed update, was weird,sit an idle would run rough immediately rev it up smoothed out. It's been a few years now, still running smooth. Good luck. PS only use Mopar crank sensor no aftermarket

I have a 98 Cherokee Sport with the same 4L inline six. They put AW4 automatic transmision, I found was made by Toyota
I had a 1990 Cherokee Sport 4x4 with the 4.0 Liter engine. It was the best vehicle I ever owned until my daughter wrecked it. I would buy another to take on the beach at nearby South Padre Island but they are selling for $6000 with 300,000 miles. I should have kept it when the insurance company totaled it. I could have fixed it myself and driven it forever.
Had a 2004 Grand Cherokee and a 2004 Rubicon best vehicles I ever owned

My Army Jeep (1984-86) started its career in the Korean War.
Interesting.... had a old grand Cherokee that sounded just like that. I think it was a 2001 or 2002. It FELT ok driving it, so I never worried about it. Interesting.
As we experience now-days,the quality of things going down,specially as new company's take over.
1st gen. are even more reliable, believe it or not. The '93 version was basically a beefier and more upscale Cherokee which do last if properlytaken care of. I recall that one of the most well-known issues that the 2nd generation had was the rotors didn't last as long on average. I also didn't like the bulging fuel tank underneath because of the hideaway spare tire taking up the space below the cargo area. Gen. 3 looked nice at the time in '05 but felt "cheaper" in materials and ride quality. The new model looks like a vast improvement, but now it's like taking out a second mortgage to own one... especially with the Wagoneer model. Maybe wait a few years to see the longterm reliability and to possibly pick one up at half the cost than brand new.
The 3.6 Pentagrams still have head cracking problems, I'm not betting that they'd last too long.
My cousin had a 93 Grand Cherokee that lasted him 480k miles.
I do have the 1st generation 93' Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4wd with the I6 4.0 It's basically all stock. Where can a guy go to find out what exact motor I have in it (H0 or ?) and about the vehicle itself from the factory? It would be so appreciative for your time and expertise in this matter. I always loved the 2nd generation WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee. I did had one back in 2017 and it was a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ with the I6 engine. But unfortunately the engine blew up at 135k on it back in 2020, just days before the engine blew up I heard a rattling noise I couldn’t figure out what it was. Until I found out after my Jeep blew up it was Rod Knock. I’ve change the oil every 5,000 miles on it but the engine was old and the previous owners never took good care of the vehicle. I’ve basically turned my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ into an endless money pit as I used it as my daily driver. Jeep’s are not reliable anymore, I will get another Jeep WJ some day but only as a weekend off road and snow vehicle but not a daily driving vehicle.
V8s do not have more torque than I6s. There's a reason semis use I6
I use to would get into my air cleaner a guy show me so put a plactic worked fine didn't get in air cleaner

Usually, the caps leak power steering fluid. The rubber gasket dries out and cracks. Replace the cap. 👍

My mother-in-law has a 2007 Jeep with 6 cult and Mercedes transmission. With only 37k on it n 2016, speed sensors in tranny failed. You didn’t know if Car would do 60mph or 10mph on any given day. $850 wholesale to fix. No problems now at 48k original.
I wonder how much a new set of injectors would cost? If they’re cheap, why not replace them all?

Having lots of experience with those i6 engines, i will say, the simple re-torqueing of the rockers will take a majority of the ticking you might hear from these and the carbureted engines...they tend to redline after 3500rpms and youngsters love revving them up and kicking dirt or leaving tire marks...tends to stretch things out a little
Uh, this is definitely not a carbureted engine lol. There hasn't been an American vehicle with a carburetor since the 80's.
Can you turbo charge those 4.0’s ?

We all know the 4.0 is great however that 4 speed automatic transmission does not have a very good reputation. Most start slipping around 120k. Maybe this Jeep got lucky, but I'm guessing that transmission has been replaced.
What year's did Mercedes make the grand Cherokee jeep

My 2001 4.0 132,000 miles so reliable.They screwed the pooch dropping the 4.0 and the solid front axel.
Sadly that generation Jeep didn't have any input from Chrysler. It was designed and released before the acquisition. It's the 3rd gen (2004) that Mercedes designed. Same with the E - Class and Chrysler 300

I have replaced just as many Toyota and Lexus pneumatic struts as I have Jeep or any other brand of vehicle struts. Now, I don’t have your 50+ years of experience, as I retired after 33 years as a professional mechanic. People watch your videos because they BELIEVE you are objective - but you are not. The vast majority of the information you share is valid and correct - Thank you sincerely for that. But to be honest for all of us, most Toyota’s are great cars but they are not the holy grail of the interstate as you preach, and every other brand of car is not “junk” as you also preach. EVERY established vehicle manufacturer has made some truly great vehicles, and EVERY vehicle manufacturer had made some clinkers (yes, even Toyota).
These are genuine Jeep made hood struts. They are not made any longer, but NOS parts are available for as low as $800 a pair 😂
Lmao I would be real surprised if that trans was original.. those things had an o ring in them that didn't have the proper depth to it's groove and leaks by and causes a no shift to 3rd and slipping out of gear.. cold no work and hot works better. The jeep I was familiar with died along with the ignition when it disintegrated lol keyed chips. Gotta love when antitheft turns into owner frustration.

Mines a 2000 Grand Cherokee with 149k on it. Don't think it's really very under-powered. They are built like a tank. If you keep the rust away they'll run forever.

I have 229k on my 01 JGC Laredo 4.0L IN6 that I’ve been restoring for the last 6 years. I just replaced the tranny gasket, filter, and the four solenoids last year. Just recently, the OD light and the Trans Over Temp light comes on and off when the engine is cold but goes away once the engine warms up but still runs just fine. Need to replace the suspension coils and insulators next, about $1,400 job. It’s gotta be done. ❤
