Why Am I Believing This? - Dominique | Street Epistemology

- Dominique believes in the Christian God. The belief allows him to be optimistic as well as a way to have a good sense of morals. Although diving down into the reasons for his belief, he questions what is really true and wonders what evidence he really has for it.

Huge props to Dominique for his honesty. This is definitely one of my favorite conversations. If you ever read this Dominique, I'd love to have a follow-up interview anytime.
Cordial Curiosity Dominique said it best. 'You may be onto something. That's powerful stuff.'
Enlightening SE for sure.
I would also love to see a follow up. Dominique, keep searching with that open mind.
He seems to be an amazing guy. Kudos for your method, this is extremely interesting (and made me a more optimistic atheist) in so many levels.
Big shout out to The Thinking Atheist on Facebook, which led me here.
What a cool fella that Dominique ... such a huge change in one's mind... and he took it in so beatifully, so open heartedly ... good job ... real good job man.
Yes! He gets it!! People are getting it. Awesome job to BOTH of you!
Anthony, this interview really shows how SE is a great way to get people to start thinking about why they hold their beliefs without confrontation. This is so valuable. Thank you for starting a revolution of sorts and suggesting this channel. You all are inspiring. Reid is doing a great job.
Sorry Anthony, but Reid is the new "leader in the clubhouse" (golf metaphor, I know...) with Dominique!
This is the example of how a believer should think about how they came to their beliefs.
Alan Ashton And that makes me happy :-)
Well, all I know is I'm learning a lot from all, and maybe I'll get up the courage to try SE one of these days.
stevos999 Cool. I think everyone will benefit as more people come in and give this method a try, particularly if they put their own unique spin on things like Reid has done here. #SE10k
Dominique for the win!!!!
Very smart guy, and huge props for his intellectual honesty.
My heart is so happy right now! Thank you Dominique for being open-minded and honest during this conversation!
His honesty is admirable
That moment was AWESOME when he saw your line of reasoning and appreciated it!
Oh my goodness I freakin love Dominique and his energy and openness and curiosity, and your happy grin at the end :) well done everyone!
I really like Dominique. He's clearly intelligent and he's open minded. Many (if not most) people would get defensive as soon as they realized their beliefs were being challenged in a significant and meaningful way. But Dominique saw the value in that. Excellent discussion!
I agree -- probably my favorite kind of Christian. Not just tolerable but almost certainly a net positive force in the world (regardless of his admittedly tenuous core beliefs). Surely with his mind and personality he could pull that goodness off just as well without the supernatural overlay; but I'm more than happy to accept him over the ugly alternative forms of "Christian."
There's evidence that Dominique is a very bright guy. His interest at the end there would have tempted me go on about Popper's falsification and pseudoscience and all kinds of philosophical fun. Great stuff, Reid. Keep em comin!
Is there a specific Popper work you would point to?
@@Rorshacked He has a short paper called Science as Falsification from his book Conjectures and Refutations. I read a bit from The Logic of Scientific Discovery in my Phi. of Science class. I’d also highly recommend his politically philosophical work The Open Society and it’s Enemies.
that could not have gone any better. wow. Dominique seems like a great guy.
Amazing conversation reid and dominique.
Dominique you showed some great honesty. That's super admirable. If you are up for it I would love to see a follow up conversation.
Yes, Dominique was actually thinking. I hope for him the wonders that are the real world. And Reed , very near perfection. You timing, focus and open honesty were all brought to the table, so as to help another human. Thank you for improving humanity.
Yes me too, really enjoyed Dominique's outlook and conversational style, he is comfortable to have a two way discussion, think aloud, concede a point, ask rhetorical questions and listen. Rare skills, nice one Dominque, keep thinking, keep debating.
I think it was an Epiphany for him. First time in SE I see that exposing your point of view is more efficient than asking questions.
He gave Dom relatability. Also useful.
Knecht Catherine Giving your point of view should be used more often.
I think it gives confidence to thé IL.
jeudi 4 décembre I think the key is that it should only happen if the interviewee asks about it
Cool guy to hang around. I wish I could have a talk with him myself. Thanks to both You for this conversation!
Dominique is the kind of people we need more on this planet. So honest and open. I had tears at the end.
What a DAMN, DAMN, good talk. I get get over the chills.
He's was so honest and truthful. It was a pleasure to watch.
Man I love seeing that "penny drop" moment when someone gets it, it's like a gear just engaged and opened a neural path in their brain that had never been cleared and now the floodgates have opened.
Six months down the line. This is the conversation I've shared most (at least 100 times on FB). To show why SE is a powerful, and incredibly useful conversational tool.
Thanks Reid.
When it comes to reaching 10,000. Both Anthony and yourself deserve a lot of credit.
Thank you again. Your videos genuine make it much easier to explain things to people. Or at minimum, are a hugely helpful tool. Keep up the great work man.
Has to be said too though, cool IL. Dominique seems a really decent honest man, who'd be welcome to have a beer with this Irish fool anytime!
Genuine respect and best wishes "D". Should you ever read this. You a good man :)
"What you're saying is . . . " (around 14:40) I wonder if Dominique normally restates another's position as his usual way of carrying on a conversation or was it the fact that this was a conversational behavior modeled so well by Reid. In either case, this is one of many moments in this conversation that I love, love, love -- well done to both of you for being good human beings. This, friends and neighbors, is how to really communicate.
If everyone could be as intellectually honest as Dominique the world would be a better place. Awesome guy!
I like to think that I'm able to have these types of conversations with Theists, but then I remember that the key to a conversation like this is they need to be as intellectually honest as Dominique.
I love that rowan Atkinson has got into doing this type of thing.
Were you tearing up at the end there Reid? Getting a little misty eyed. Shows you really care. Great talk. Definitely one for a follow up in a few months time.
He looked like a proud papa.
I envy you Reid. I can't imagine how fulfilling it must've been to have opened that young man's eyes. You didn't seek to destroy or disprove, just question and analyze. I absolutely adore your approach and hope to put it into action in my future conversations with 'believers'.
One of your best! As he asked you questions, you kind of stepped out of SE (that was very appropriate and respectful) and then pulled the conversation back in the SE direction. Excellent! It would be so cool if you had a chance to talk with him again. Do you hand out cards so people know how to get back in touch with you?
Couldn't wait to get this one up, huh? Don't blame you.
This is one of my favorites of the conversations you've had. It's so interesting listening to an intelligent person rationalize his belief and slowly realize that it might not be true.
He clearly relished the change of mind. Surely this is the ideal.
Dominique was genuinely excited that his beliefs were being questioned. This is a very rare quality that we should all strive for.
This may be my favorite SE video of all time. Dominique is such a charismatic guy, and his openness and curiosity is very refreshing. Great work Reid. Kudos to both of you.
I would go as far to say that this is my favourite conversation on this channel.
The question of falsifiability is one I don't think many believers understand properly.
I asked my father in law who is a Pastor,
Is there anything which if proven true would render your belief false?
I explained the question to the point where i thought he understood it, yet his answer was NO there's nothing.
So I explained to him how problematic that is for his belief but he either didn't understand or didn't care or his cognitive dissonance kicked in hard.
Basically the chat came down to, he doesn't care about his belief making sense or whether there's evidence for it or if it's logical he believes because he wants to believe for purely emotional reasons.
Basically no amount of evidence reason or logic would change his mind, he's a closed book.
That stunned me coming from a Pastor's mouth, I'm sure he wouldn't let his congregation know that.
This is the SE conversation I always come back to. It gives me hope for humanity, and our ability to see what is true once we are shown the path to it. It took fifteen minutes for Dominique to fundamentally rethink his worldview.
Wow, good one man!! He was good and Honest, big ups to him
What - A - Great - Conversation! Thx to both of you!
WOW! This is one of the most beautiful SE conversations I've ever listened to, such a great introduction of the concept of falsification, Dominique is a wonderful interlocutor as well! I hope I will one day be able to interact with people in this manner, this is what mutual understanding and learning from each other should look like. Thank you, Reid!
What an interesting strategy. Reid isn't expressing answers, just slowly asking inoffensive questions. Nothing threatening or triggering. Very cool
Two people, with nearly opposite beliefs, likely coming from different backgrounds...having an open, respectful discussion about seeking truth...this is my version of heaven.
Wow even as an already atheist i took that exactly the way Dominique took it. You gave me a huge epiphany about my atheism and I believe this video has single handedly made me want to learn epistemology and become one myself. Thank you very much!
14:03 “that’s really enlightening”
History would agree.
i am literally shaking right now. this is awesome stuff, i only learned about street epistemology today, but it's so awesome, i love to see beliefs being challenged and this being the second video i watched of yours already makes me think it's the best one.
it's incredible to see theramin trees' topics on the SPOT and dominique was just awesome in general. he was a lot open, and seeing him light up just like tia was really exciting, even more because he was more willing to seek truth, and even asked you a lot too. i let out a laugh after he asked you about optimism the same way you were asking the questions LMAOO. it was so interesting to see. thanks
"What's true? ...Truth is relative." And the rest after that was simply wonderful. What a great conversation!
This man Dominique is open to reason and logic regardless of his beliefs and that is admirable. He is literally the smartest person I’ve seen you talk to so far.
It's fun to see which ways Reid goes down as opposed to what I may have done. It's like a maze with multiple solutions at each junction. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and for sharing these videos with all of us.
Literally got goose bumps at the end. That was awesome! It's rare that you can actually see that moment when someone gets it suddenly. At the very least, he will begin to question why he holds his beliefs and be open to adjusting them, if not abandoning them. Mission accomplished when you get someone to start questioning. Great interview.

Excellent!
And there's "Hitchen's razor" which says that the burden of proof regarding the truthfulness of a claim lies with the one who makes the claim, and if this burden is not met, then the claim is unfounded and its opponents do not need to argue any further in order to dismiss the claim.
""What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence"
This was a beautiful exchange. Seriously. He clearly gets it.
You can really see here how important it is that Dominique started with an open, honest frame of mind. That and Reid's skill in keeping that openness so the conversation could get to the root (or closer to the root anyway) of the belief. Beautiful on both parts.
Cordial Curiosity. You did it. This is the best communication between "believers" and "non believers" I have seen, and you do live up to the name.
It's amazing how easily people believe things without any actual proof and then when asked to really think about it they always resort to faith and feelings.
Of all of the SE interviews that are conducted, what percentage of interlocutors are this thoughtful, sincere, and open minded? It's clear that having someone on the other side that is capable of being honest with themself goes a long way. Great job by both of you!
I have to say that I'm very impressed by how open minded Dominique is here. That he was willing to be open to questioning his beliefs and look at other ways of thinking about them is a huge credit to him. Whether or not he remains a theist is almost irrelevant, the fact that he is thinking about why he believes what he does is job done. Kudos to both of you.
What a great example of SE combined with an honest interlocutor. Positive, enthusiastic and insightful! Well done!
You realize right away what a smart fella he is. The genuine interest in other ideas is really endearing. Whether Christian or not, Dominique shows an open mind, civility and curiosity. That's a good look on anyone.
That was absolutely refreshing to watch. What an inspirational character Dominique seems to be! I loved seeing him getting to his little enlightenments. Wonder were his thoughts are now that a few years have gone by.
This was so incredible to watch! It's amazing to watch someone have deep insights in front of your eyes.
The one thing I'm wondering is did he leave with a good way of contacting you? I imagine there will be a good chance he will want to talk more later.
“Education: the path from cocky ignorance to miserable uncertainty.”
― Mark Twain
Dominique almost makes me want 'faith' instead of suffering miserable uncertainty...but here I am, miserably uncertain. Somehow Dominique is more optimistic about his uncertain 'truth'.
12:52
Reed: "Yeah, because... believes that can't be shown to be false, ...could be any belief!"
Dominque: "hmmmh... That's very deep."
Reed: "Yeah."
Dominique: "Yeah. ...Like if you just can't... right."
Red: "Yeah."
The way to both just say "yeah (yes)" back and forth and agree. And the look on Dominique's face
- amazing moment!😃
I’m so happy for this channel. Amazing job. Keep up the good work.
Great job, Reed! That was amazing composure!
And great stuff to the interviewee!
I love his on-the-spot self analyzation. That was great.
Damn man you're good. That's how every discussion should go. I used to do this with myself when I was a child, dividing my mind into two parts, one proposing the beliefs and the other challenging them. I didn't know it had a name and you could do it with other people. Good job.
Holy shit this interaction was amazing! Terrific job Reed! I got chills when it finally clicked with him.
Wow! What a great talk! Dominique is a sharp, quick, thinker. I also really respect his level of intellectual honesty. This is rare.
Wow. You just rocketed to the top ten favorite youtubers. I'm really impressed!
Just discovered your channel after watching Anthony Magnabosco for a while. This really is excellent stuff. I couldn't stop smiling! Thanks
I loved this! He was very articulate and eager to take something from the conversation. This is my favorite so far.
It pains me to hear some of these conversations, but I like this guy. I respect that he seems to hold his beliefs out of humility, and he's not defensive. I hope he gets access to a great advanced education.
What a great conversation! Recently found this channel through Anthony and I really love what you guys are doing; keep up the awesome work!
Excellent watching his mind blown by sound reasoning, and then internalizing it and understanding why it is valuable. It takes great security to make such hard about-faces and verbalize them. Well done.
Awesome guy. Huge props. I can say without a doubt this is one of the best SE videos out right now. It's rare someone admits to changing confidence in a belief. I really like Dominique. Seems like an awesome dude. Great job.
This was so beautiful to watch, seeing him come to an understanding. And all done so friendly, calmly and willingly.
I just found this channel a couple of days ago. I’m obviously very late to the party, but I absolutely loved this video!
This quickly became one my favorite SE conversations ever!
It doesn't get any better than that! Well done. I'm glad you had the immediate perspective that it was your best.
I love Reid's "wow" at the end. That sums up SE at its best and a very good conversation!!
Reed. I keep coming back to this video as an amazing example of SE working just from a random conversation.
So ace.
This is one of the more honest conversations I’ve seen in street epistemology really awesome
Wonderful conversation. It's truly special to see what conversations can happen when two people are open and polite. Thank you to both of you.
I love this! Two reasonable, polite individuals from different backgrounds having an intellectual discussion about things that may challenge their world view w/o any attacks of character, stubbornness, etc. I'm glad to know I share a planet w/the two of you and wish more could carry on as respectfully as you did here!
Out of all the SE videos I've seen, this one makes the belief/falsification idea the clearest. I really "got it" this time too, and I've been studying SE for a year! Thanks, awesome. I think this is the core and highest value of SE.
Omg... this is my new favorite channel! I love this content! Keep it up!
This was awesome! Great job Reid! And wonderful from Dominique as well! I could see the excitement as things started to click with Dominique, he embraced the whole idea of SE and willingly began to challenge his own beliefs. What more could you ask for? I think Dominique will look back at this conversation as some kind of turning point. KUDOS!!
You've shed some genuine enlightenment on Dominique. That's awesome! This is what SE is all about., Congratulations to both of you for a fantastic conversation!
I know it's self selection bias, but almost everyone you (and Anthony and others) converse with are really sincere, nice people. And Dominique is certainly one of the good guys. I wish him the best in his journey towards embracing reality and freeing himself from bad ideas.
Wowwww... I love Dominique's open-mindedness and his energy. This was epic. Amazing!
I love this conversation. I love Dominiques openness. I love the way you conducted it. It's great! I need to study it. Keep on going!
I've watched this about four times, and I get goosebumps every single time.
The ending question cracked me up. It is as good as Tia : " Man, you're asking though questions! " ? Love your style. You are becoming a Master.
Great job dude. He was getting. It's amazing how intelligent people like Dominique begin to see the problems in their believes when the right questions are asked.
This was a very nice interview. Dominique needed that challenging to allow him to move forward. Smart guy!
This was simply a fantastic discussion in general. You asked questions when you had to but answered while still raising questions. Just one of the best discussions I've seen regarding Christianity by far.
Yes, Dominique! Good man. An intellectually honest conversation. Most excellent work, both of you!
Awesome conversation Reid and Dominique, this made my day.
My favorite SE video EVER!!!
This is one of my favorite SE videos ever
Congratulations, both of you. Wonderful stuff!
Aaargh. Can't. Get. The. Goosebumps. To. Go. Away.
Oh, your smile at the end made my day.
Could almost swear that my mouse let out a happy squeak when I hit the subscribe button.
What a well spoken and nice IL, great conversation!
I just adore this conversation which I've come back to and watched several times. I enjoy Dominique's personality greatly! My only slight worry now, is that at approx 8 minutes in to the video, he says he attributes his optimism to his belief, and that it keeps his morale high to have that trust that there is a reason behind everything that happens to him, good and bad. Whilst I actually think this character trait is in him intrinsically as it really seems to exude, I fear that because of how receptive he was to this conversation, and that there's potentially a great impact it has had on his faith itself, that he doesn't then let that impact his clearly effervescent personality, and that he may feel he's lost ANY reason whatever to continue his optimistic and joyful view on life. It would be heart-breaking to posit that some of that may reduce, but even at the end of the video, he seems to celebrate the concept of challenging that belief, and takes his wonderful character right along for the ride, so I'm hopeful. I'm just not sure to what degree to assume his personality and joy is synonymous with his faith and I think that's the last thing he should have any reason to lose, as it seems to be such a strength of his. I'm so glad Reid spent a bit of time on that - he was very attuned to what was being suggested by Dominique. Mitigating possible disappointment and asking him to suggest other ways to find inspiration for those values and attributes was a great and considerate move.
