Inside The Real Top Gun Training School

- Before the stars of "Top Gun: Maverick" flew onto the big screen, they spent a month and a half flying and training at the elite TOPGUN naval facility in Fallon, Nevada. Simply stepping onto the tarmac at U.S. Naval Air Station Fallon makes it easy to embellish the experience knowing it's a place unlike any other.
Great to see some focus on the real Top Gun. I was particularly impressed by the humility and dedication shown by these, the true naval aviators. Heroes all.
Those F-16's are older Block 15 models that were originally bought by Pakistan. When they failed to comply by the terms of a nuclear arms agreement the aircraft sale was denied and those brand new, at the time F-16's were stored in the Bone yard at Davis-Monthan AFB for several years. The U.S. Navy eventually got their hands on them to use as aggressors in the Top Gun training.
F-14 were designated for Iran and then Islamic revolution happened.
Oh.. thanks for explaining that.
For a moment I was scratching my head... F-16's, Navy, what?
@@TonySaju77 yes, flown by Amitabh bachan 😂..

Yes screw you guys for that set of hypocrisy cuz you posses nuclear arms yourself and Israel built them under your nose

I was born and raised in Fallon, Nevada and grew up watching jets from the Fallon Naval Station flying over. In the 1980's I worked at the Fallon Naval Station for Morrison Knutson, contractor for the physical facilities maintenance. I was responsible for the non secure telecommunications and utility accounting. It was an extremely interesting and responsible job and got to see some very interesting things. I remember when the SR71 Blackbird was being decommissioned and one sat at the base for a couple days. We could only see it from a distance but what an awesome thing that was to experience. I moved to Oregon in 1992, but still miss hearing the jets overhead and sometimes wish I could still live in Fallon for many reasons. There is nothing quite like living where you can see "forever" and to watch those jets fly across the Nevada skies.
Is dark star a real plane? Sorry for asking.
@@Bella.1310 It is a Fictional Plane
There is one that looks similiar : SR-72
I put off seeing the movie and finally saw it and it was truly great. I give it a ten and I bailed on Hollywood. Walked out of this movie feeling really good which cannot be said for the other movies I've seen in recent years.
1000% percent in agreement with you. Well said.
just finish the movie its fantastic
Yeah it was a weird experience, I forgot that at one time new movies weren't almost exclusively dripping with propaganda. I gotta be honest, I didn't enjoy it as much as everyone else because I knew which parts were totally preposterous. I did, on the whole, enjoy it anyway.
" no other plane like it"
Air Force Fighter Weapons School: "And so I took that personally"
After this movie Top Gun II, the Navy's Top Gun school will have to upgrade their classes to match Tom Cruise ... LOL
I live 5 miles away from the home of Top Gun. Born and raised, I’m so proud of that.
The original for decades was at Miramar.
@@GT-mn3bx that was its original home.
RIP Tony Scott & Don Simpson who were the director "Tony Scott" & producer "Don Simpson" of the first Top Gun movie.
Yeah it was too much for Don Simpson to handle, all that fame and cash...
@@audiolover Don had over 20 different kinds of drugs including marijuana & cocaine inside his system at the time of his death & they were all there at the same time which was unbelievable. Also he had at least $1,000 worth of prescription drugs inside his cabinet at his home. He was only 52 years old when he died. Tony committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge & was only 68 years old when he intentionally ended his own life.
F-16's, shown over and over again, never go out to the boat. They are not in the OpNav. They are in the TopGun aggressor squadron. There was little video of the F/A-18E or -F or the F-35C that would be in TopGun now.
Imagine going to watch Top Gun as a Top Gun graduate or Instructor. Surreal.
why would it be surreal? probably just more like very entertaining, but definitely not surreal..
Kinda disappointed that Fallon isn't even mentioned in the movie. Almost like the studio forgot it moved to Fallon after Miramar was turned over to the Marines. I guess Fallon isn't as sexy of a location as San Diego.
well, because the movie is fake, it's hollywood, so they're only gonna include the real life bits that are exciting to an audience, so only a few real facts.
“There’s no other place like it in the world” . USAF Fighter Weapons School- are we a joke to U?

Exercise is called RED FLAG it is held at Nellis AFB in North Las Vegas. I have been there several times.
Awesome to see, God bless these brave men and women in uniform
I wouldn't call them brave, maybe occasionally some of them might show bravery, like in combat, but not here in this context.
F-16s and F-5s are not naval aircraft, though they might be used as adversaries in training. When I did it the adversary aircraft were A-4s. It's pretty cool, but there's nothing other fleet aviators don't do. They just do it as their concentration within naval aviation.
Man they sure don't look like the tom cruise gang lol

The commander looks like he's 16!! Impressive people to be that young and so good. Keep in mind they work their @$$ off when there. 14hr+ days, almost 7 days a week. Fun lifestyle but not without sacrifice.
@@Chad_Max anyone who’s ever served in the armed forces will admit it’s a very homoerotic environment. Especially the US Navy 😂
Why is Top Gun at NAS North Island in the new movie and not at NAS Fallon 🤔
My guess would be mood, visual appeal, consistency with first movie (California, anyway), etc.
Since I was stationed at NASNI, they did it to honor me!!
Because NAS North Island isn't surrounded by legal brothels!

In the movie top gun Marverick you could already see that there were pilots from top gun itself to fly for the actors who were in the back, only the aircraft at the end was Tom himself I thought but what an avaring and difference with the top gun from (1986 movie) with everything thanks to the real top gun for borrowing and participating 💕💕💕

Wow. They named the air filed after Jimmy Fallon.
Haven't see Top Gun 2 yet but I am sure it will be exciting. Wish TOPGUN naval academy transitioned to F35C so we could have seen that aircraft in the movie. No disrespect to the venerable F/A-18Super Hornet which is a huge improvement over F/A-18 I just would love to see the best and highest tech aircraft go.
The reason they didn’t use F35’s is because they are single seaters and the storyline plays very heavily on pilot/RIO relationships. That’s why they chose the F/A-18.
@@Case16710 Makes perfect sense! I guess no 2 seat F35 trainers?
@@starshipcaptain4753 I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but there is a plot reason why they couldn’t use the F-35 and chose the F/A-18.

1:33 Lieutenant but has Captain insignia? Is this a normal thing or am I missing something here? I'm Air Force, so not sure if it's a Navy thing either.
dude.... as a VETERAN, you should know rank structure of other branches... a little at least. O3 in Navy and Marine Corps is Lieutenant... O3 in Airforce is Captain. Same collar devices.... you must be new to the Air Force....

Why are they flying F16's? Seems like they got their footage mixed up
They are aggressors, that's why they all have those paint schemes, to represent MiGs and Sukhois. They're in the same squadron as the rest of the F18s.
Navy uses f-16s at top gun only
Good to know, thanks
they fly what ever they need to.... you think the enemy will stop and say oh ok ok you don't know my plane.... I apologize I will go land and take off and only engage you in planes you are familiar with. give me a break man!
Top Gun movie is a fake. You guys are real and Blue angels are real.I salute you as retired USAF Sargent.
Very weak and rushed report. He didnt cover most of the detail. Those jets were the enemy aggressor squadron. F5s, Vipers...and they could also have shown the gun camera of F4 Phantoms dog fighting Viet MIG 17s and 21s. The reason for top gun school back in 1970s. Was the lost skill set of dog fighting. Not just engagements with missles. Not impressed
Gun camera..!! Navy Phantoms carried no gun...
And we are right back to where we started. These young people today and their "dogfighting is a thing of the past" drives me crazy. These pilotless wonder weapons are bullshit. Every boy and girl dreams of getting into a fighter plane and going against another pilot. Proving yourself, who's better. Flying a plane like you just stole it"with your hair on fire. Dammit. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. And we do. I get more pissed off than my nearly 60 mind should.
COOL!!!!

Thanks for the observation Captain Obvious.
@@marcheskitv lol
Yea whats up with all the F16s. I do love me some Vipers, perhaps my fav fighter but this is Navy ie F18s
Ah! They're aggressor aircrafts (sporting those camouflage schemes), they were to play bad guys in the training, so it's adds to the realism to certain degree by flying aircrafts that differs to their actual field service, though the agressors do also flies F/A-18s as well.
Pov: The thumbnail has F-16s. Which are airforce jets. Not navy jets. LMAO
Navy aggressor squadrons (the "bad guys" at Top Gun) fly F-5s, F/A-18s...and F-16s. Look closely at the video and you'll see "NAVY" stenciled on the F-16s.
a few minutes of googling shows those -16's are used as aggressor aircraft, very common practice at both USN and USAF weapons schools. hell, they even have NAVY painted on the side of them.
@@drttrus You're 100% correct but what can you expect from a Top Gun audience, inteligence? Hahaha not likely.
BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!!!
Mostly what I saw in the video, were aggressors... those F-16 are not part of the Navy.
Interesting. Those are F16 which there's no variant for navy only airforce. And the flag on the aircraft are airforce emblems. Airforce doesn't have top gun only navy. Little confused with this clip.
there is the F16N was made for the Navy and that's what you see in the video

Next time you may want to do some homework before enlightening the world with inaccuracies.
Here is a little history for individuals that are fans of the movies Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick. The first Top Gun competition was held in 1949. The white pilots competed with the latest state of art aircraft while the African-American pilots were forced to compete with older obsolete planes. After 3 days of competition The Tuskegee Airmen team of : Captain Alva Temple, 1st Lieutenant Harry Stewart, 1st Lieutenant James Harvey, and 1st Lieutenant Halbert Alexander (alternate) were announced the winners. There was dead silence in the room. Not one of their colleagues applauded this accomplishment. The victory was swept under the rug and the trophy was not seen by the public for 55 years. Introducing the real Top Guns.
The amount of money these aircrafts burn up everyday must be colossal
Not a fraction of what goes to Federal welfare, prisons and corrections, public housing, food stamps, etc.
yes you're right, every single one has to be absolutely perfect so constant top to bottom maintenance to ensure perfection. Apparently upwards of around 10k USD per flight hour and something like 200 - 300 hours per year for each plane. Therefore 2 million per year to run just one F16 (excluding purchase price of course), 1500 fighters in USAF, so 3 billion?
Then there's all the other planes of course, then the Navy, etc etc. Mind-boggling money.
Don't tell rusia, china

"Everyday from when the sun comes up til' the sun goes down and beyond we are launching..." wasting fuel dreaming of an enemy with an air force to fight...Funny the navy using F-16s. What happened with using the 300 million dollars F-22 150 million dollars F-35 per unit not including maintenance, armaments, and upgrades cost.
The excuse maybe to use F-16s as adversary. The truth is every fighter pilot loves the F-16 cockpit and bubble canopy. Nothing comes close, not the F-5, F-15, F/A-18, F-22, or even the F-35 glass touchscreens.
