Modal Verb | How to use WOULD

  • I'm going to show you 8 ways to use the modal verb WOULD:
    1. In reported speech: "She said she'd call after lunch."
    2. Making wishes about people's behavior:"I wish you'd listen to me!"
    3. In unreal conditionals:"If I had more time, I'd take up yoga."
    4. To mean "want": "I'd like to stay in and watch a movie tonight. You?"
    5. To mean prefer: "I think I'd rather eat out tonight."
    6. Polite offers: "Would you like some lemon with your water?"
    7. Polite requests: "Would you mind saving this seat?"
    8. To talk about past, habitual actions: "As a kid, I'd spend hours and hours at the beach, swimming and hunting for shells."
    Would, just like other modal verbs, is a super verb that wears many different hats. You can use it to make offers, to complain about things, to make unreal conditional sentences, to talk about your past and more.
