Director: Sam Pollard
Starring: Martin Luther King
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered today as an American hero: a bridge-builder, a shrewd political tactician, and a moral leader. Yet throughout his history-altering political career, he was often treated by U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies like an enemy of the state. In this virtuosic documentary, award-winning editor and director Sam Pollard (Editor, 4 LITTLE GIRLS, MO’ BETTER BLUES; Director/Producer, EYEZ ON THE PRIZE, SAMMY DAVIS, JR.: I’VE GOTTA BE ME) lays out a detailed account of the FBI surveillance that dogged King’s activism throughout the ’50s and ’60s, fueled by the racist and red-baiting paranoia of J. Edgar Hoover. In crafting a rich archival tapestry, featuring some revelatory restored footage of King, Pollard urges us to remember that true American progress is always hard-won.

Can't wait to watch this! Hope they mention how his demands for economic justice were seen as dangerous, not just his civil rights work.
@zeta how and where do i watch this
The economic aspect was by far seen as the most dangerous. As long as he was occupied in the South exposing racist politicians and police that was fine, Northern politicians cheered him on. The next phase of the movement however put a spotlight directly on them as well and threatened to expose their abuses. Not that the North was much better when it came to racism anyway, it was just more hidden and subverted and came out in different ways. In that respect it was almost worse than the South in my view because at least the South was honest about being racist (and no I'm not from the South, just an honest view :D). I think it's interesting to note that the most resistance these guys ran into wasn't in the South, it was in Illinois, where they even had other black people opposing them ffs
Demands for economic rights AND the end of the Vietnam war. Eisenhower told us beware the industrial war complex. US refused to listen.
The FBI's real role isn't "law enforcement". It is containment of the population. A government of the people should be obedient to the people, not antagonistic to the point of physical harm. But that's what we have in the USA.
It's really crime cover up for the rich & powerful. They really are more like an organized criminal network of enforcers for the rich & powerful. Absolutely nothing to do with justice.
HAD. Present FBI ain’t hoover’s FBI.
@@lolodee3528 You can say that again. Hoover was just a racist and prejudiced pig and a hypocrite. 🤷♀️
@@lolodee3528 explain January 6th then
Indeed, the role of the police is to protect the state, not the citizens. But it expends beyond the USA unfortunately, I can't think of any country where it isn't the case. And it's getting even worse.
This is why protests are considered violence but not the discriminations that precede them nor the repressions that quell them.
They knew he was the black messiah, so he had to go.. This man MLK shaped my life and inspired me to be a better black man everyday..
"A "black messiah
He inspired most of us just to be better human beings
@@juliusrandle2733 no he wasn’t lol
They assumed he was a black Messiah, just because he was a powerful and inspiring leader and orator.
I'm a white guy and I looked up to martin luther king when i was a kid he was my hero. Because we have the same character and prisonliy. When I was 9 years old I was saying the same things he was saying before I even knew who he was and I come from a mixed-race family.
The FBI also targeted the Puerto Rican independence movement. It violently suppressed the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico from the 1930s till the 1950s. The pro-independence movement was weakened, but we are still here fighting the good fight.

@@nymeriasand7572 ¡Un millón de gracias por el corazón!
They did the same with Malcolm X but were surprised and disappointed that they could find nothing inappropriate or undisciplined about him. In the end they begrudgingly conceded amongst themselves that he was a saint compared to others out there when it came down to his religious and marital fidelity. Nevertheless they still continued to ferment deadly unrest between MX and the NOI leadership including sending counterfeit threatening letters, appearing to be from MX and his new movement to the NOI leadership. That false flag, cointel method was again successful for Hoover to achieve their illegal objective. By this time, the mob had already acquired compromising photos and details about Hoover's secret lifestyle (he was allegedly homosexual) that they used to keep him in check.
Then why did his widow go to Court to have the FBI tapes withheld from the public until 2027?The story is not finished until that time.
@@olivercrangle7160 most likely because it’ll stirr civil unrest into civil war. The amount of f*#ked up stuff that the US has done to not only outside countries but their own citizens. Their own lands that they own to do testing on people without their knowledge all to create antibiotics for the US population and it’s okay if you dont believe me I’m the one that lived this for years in Puerto Rico and you can also look it up
@@nymeriasand7572 The United States Empire has a great deal to answer for. It has generated much negative karma. Donald John Trump is part of that negative karma.
Fbi-cia, Hoover/lbj, these compromised agencies-the 60’s murders have to come clean. A family is as sick as it’s secrets. Sunlight is the disinfectant.
@@lolodee3528 I agree. The truth will eventually see the light of day. It will shock many people.
And can we just stop and admire Mrs.King, her intelligence and how beautifully stunning she was?? 🙌
I met Coretta Scott King and her son several times when I worked for BB King in the mid 90's and she was a wonderful person. The Epitomy of elegance, kindness and had a Regal Quality about her. 🥰
Going back to the past will hopefully enlighten others on how we got to where we are today!
And enlighten the tactics some will still attempt to use today.
@@mckenleymason1212 is the permanent victim card used by black people one of those tactics you speak of?
@@robertmills4343 let me guess.....you still wish slavery was around and legal huh?
don’t encourage trolls. You can see there’s no real care in that post.
He wasnt perfect nobody is perfect..but as long as he fought for people of colour to be recognised as humans..then I got mad respect for him..he dint sell his people out he fought for them...no huma in this world can be perfect we just choose to take the positive vibe in them and live out the negative vibe..I dont support his extra-marital affairs...that to me is just a perfect NO..but I can take his words of wisdom..his courage...thats what matters in the end...
And in any case, what right did the FBI have to spy on him like that? They're not private eyes hired by a suspicious wife to prove whether or not her husband is having an affair, Coretta didn't ask them to do that. They didn't care about whether or not he was faithful unless they could get something out of it, using them to threaten Martin and Coretta. How is their marriage any of their business? He was a man who advocated for non-violence, and yet they still didn't want him to succeed in his aims.....
@@agenttheater5 Hoover was a bigot, a hypocrite, and a bully. 🤷♀️
@@ernieartgirl3927 Definitely. Heard even the people working for him were scared of him because he had files on all of them. And it's important that we remember that about J.Edgar - both through this documentary and the 'Judas and the Black Messiah' movie. Thankfully what I remember of the 'J. Edgar' movie they didn't deny his being a bully.
I wonder why after 5 months this doesn’t have over 120k views 😒😶
For years on Martin Luther King Jr. Day I have gone to the Detroit Film Theatre (within the Detroit Institute of Arts) to view a really excellent documentary titled King: A Filmed Record...Montgomery to Memphis. Not this year due to COVID. However I will be watching this new film tomorrow.
An outstanding and fascinating doc with many "new" insights about BOTH King and the FBI. Highly recommend.
It's simply crazy that this was allowed to go on!!!
I saw this movie above, the movie J. Edgar(2011) and some documentaries with J.Edgar Hoover in them. And I must say that some of us believe that J. Edgar Hoover's name shouldn't have his name on any building. Because J. Edgar Hoover broke some laws while he was in charge of the FBI. And he told some lies about Dr. Martin Luther King also. And I wouldn't be surprised that his soul is in hell for some of the sins he committed or for doing some of the bad things he did when he was alive also.
And the fact that J. Edgar Hoover hated Dr. Martin Luther King at that time also.
Hoover was a racist, white Supremacist, bigot, closet homosexual and the epitome of evil and corrupt. I hope he is burning in the deepest part of hell as we speak.
This must of been when America was great!
Make America Grunt Again... :(
Martin Luther King Junior was a Freemason just like the guy that started the FBI J Edgar Hoover
They playing you for a fool
I wonder if J Edgar Hoover would've been frightened of Trump or if Trump would've been frightened of J Edgar Hoover - from what I can tell just about everyone was frightened of J Edgar Hoover, including just about everyone in the FBI, but that the only person above him they could express their concerns to was the President and the President wouldn't have done anything because of how much he depended on him.
Let them tell it right smh
Happy Dr. MLK Day.
Happy Malcolm X.
May all peaceful people, (no matter how imperfect their lives may have been), continue to make strides in our divided communities.
Who cares if he had affairs? That didn't make him evil. The people who were coming after him were evil.
The FBI should be abolished.
Total garbage human beings! How many "agents/pedophiles" went to investigate a ROPE PULL??!! But completely silent about EPSTEIN HUNTER BIDEN!!! TRASH!!!!
Yes, it cannot be reformed. The same goes for DHS and ICE.
Just keep the guys who hunt serial killers and the mob and get rid of everything else.
And replaced by what, or who, stupid?
You replace the guilty ones, not the whole agency!
@@ronlawray1563 Then it won't change. You have institutional inertia and culture at play that will not go away. You sometimes have to start all over again. I'd depose the CIA through budget cuts first.
“Either you are with us or you’re simply against us” -
Hoover was the enemy
From what I've heard he was a bully and a control freak. For some reason I still want to see the 'J. Edgar' movie from a few years ago, from what I've heard they don't hide away from the things he did, including his spying on Dr King and trying to blackmail him or threaten him into refusing the Nobel peace prize.
Well it worked. This new generation would rather hear what Jay Z and lil boosie have to say rather than any MLK like figure.
Sounds like this documentary includes a lot of the innuendos from David Garrow's new book on Dr. King.
I need this now!
Me 2
We all know who shot him. The same people that shot the Kennedy family. They have done away with several that come up with the power to be strong.
Happy MLK day to this amazing man!
And watching the documentary I don't understand why he was being the most dangerous person in the United States?? Any and every indigenous male in the US is considered the most dangerous person in the US that's been since Columbus arrived.
2023, J Edgar Hoover would be cancelled quickly for this
Hope the teachers watch this!!!!!!!
Well this aged very well indeed.
Abolish the FBI
Can someone please identify the awesome trailer music?
@zeta I don't think so.
@zeta i looked. It wasn't there

It takes money from the poor people.
It's defeatist to your desire that we witness, your analysis.
And so, it is more silencing of minds.
Lol, I just realized the powers at be or the person who shot him was stupid. They made him a martyr and that just made his impact on the world even grater even tho it was cut short.

Where is the tapes on J Edgar Hoover? I'll wait
It will be lit!

Amazing how the FBI went after King and look at it today, going after another man that won't take their shit, Donald Trump. You folks are going to love the Headbangers Ball I put together for MLK weekend 2024.

Facts
Yes, MLK was not perfect. Human beings are not perfect. He had good ideas and his heart was in the right place, even if other parts of his body were in the wrong place. Do we really have to go over this again? Everybody knows this. Asi es la vida.
I think the point of this is to highlight the actions of the FBI. How because this nonviolent man was apparently a threat to them they felt justified in spying on him and trying to blackmail him and threaten him into not continuing his work. I think it's more to criticise the actions of the FBI which aren't talked about that often and which shouldn't be forgotten.
They listen in smh on people conversations

The good news is that the fbi has moved past its problematic era. Once Hoover was gone, the bureau become one of the “good guys”
I disagree, the FBI has not moved away, I think the targets have just changed
Surely you jest. 😏
@@63CommonSense Until another “Black messiah” steps up, I promise you the FBI would do everything in their power to dismantle it.
So we are going to start re-naming streets and taking down statues now that we realize he was a much worse person than advertised, right? And this documentary doesnt even touch on his collegiate plagiarism or the fact that his name isnt even "Martin", right? But he could give a great speech so all is forgiven hahahaha
He didn't own slaves like your ancestors & heroes of this so-called republic.
He was named after his father, the Rev. Michael King, who was the senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. ... When he returned to Atlanta, the senior King decided to change his name and his son's from Michael to Martin Luther, after the German Protestant leader, according to the Martin Luther King, Jr.
@@1brainmanythoughts I know these things about the lying serial cheater. So what do you tell yourself to justify his plagiarism and adulterous behavior?
@@robertmills4343 The same thing you tell yourself by supporting Qanon, Proud boys, tRump who was also adulterous, 4-time casino looser, narcissist, racist pig. And... If you know these things about King, then tell the whole story and enlighten those who may not know it, instead of putting things out there as if he had a sudden name change to give attention to himself. Kennedy was also adulterous, but does that take away from his legacy? Newt Gingrich was also having an affair during the Clinton impeachment with an intern whom he eventually married, but where is your concern about his infidelity and hypocracy. You see, King's virtue is not your real concern, but his race is... Oh and your right-hand man Hoover was spying on Kennedy as well, and used it against him.
@@1brainmanythoughts I dont support any racist entities. None. I think they should all go away. It's funny how you are basically calling me a racist for pointing out facts. Tell me anything I've said that is "racist". You cant because I haven't.
