    Director: Sam Pollard
    Starring: Martin Luther King
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered today as an American hero: a bridge-builder, a shrewd political tactician, and a moral leader. Yet throughout his history-altering political career, he was often treated by U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies like an enemy of the state. In this virtuosic documentary, award-winning editor and director Sam Pollard (Editor, 4 LITTLE GIRLS, MO’ BETTER BLUES; Director/Producer, EYEZ ON THE PRIZE, SAMMY DAVIS, JR.: I’VE GOTTA BE ME) lays out a detailed account of the FBI surveillance that dogged King’s activism throughout the ’50s and ’60s, fueled by the racist and red-baiting paranoia of J. Edgar Hoover. In crafting a rich archival tapestry, featuring some revelatory restored footage of King, Pollard urges us to remember that true American progress is always hard-won.

The economic aspect was by far seen as the most dangerous. As long as he was occupied in the South exposing racist politicians and police that was fine, Northern politicians cheered him on. The next phase of the movement however put a spotlight directly on them as well and threatened to expose their abuses. Not that the North was much better when it came to racism anyway, it was just more hidden and subverted and came out in different ways. In that respect it was almost worse than the South in my view because at least the South was honest about being racist (and no I'm not from the South, just an honest view :D). I think it's interesting to note that the most resistance these guys ran into wasn't in the South, it was in Illinois, where they even had other black people opposing them ffs

The FBI's real role isn't "law enforcement". It is containment of the population. A government of the people should be obedient to the people, not antagonistic to the point of physical harm. But that's what we have in the USA.

Indeed, the role of the police is to protect the state, not the citizens. But it expends beyond the USA unfortunately, I can't think of any country where it isn't the case. And it's getting even worse.
This is why protests are considered violence but not the discriminations that precede them nor the repressions that quell them.

They did the same with Malcolm X but were surprised and disappointed that they could find nothing inappropriate or undisciplined about him. In the end they begrudgingly conceded amongst themselves that he was a saint compared to others out there when it came down to his religious and marital fidelity. Nevertheless they still continued to ferment deadly unrest between MX and the NOI leadership including sending counterfeit threatening letters, appearing to be from MX and his new movement to the NOI leadership. That false flag, cointel method was again successful for Hoover to achieve their illegal objective. By this time, the mob had already acquired compromising photos and details about Hoover's secret lifestyle (he was allegedly homosexual) that they used to keep him in check.
