Speaking from recent experience, don’t hit a wall full blast without having built up to it. Even if you’ve built up to it and/or the wall’s padded, just don’t. Solid objects have no give; Newton’s Third Law of Motion is undefeated.

Okinawa Isshin Ryu karateka fold the thumb atop of the fist.

Thanks for the look into your arts hand positions!
In Chinese martial arts we also have that one knuckle fist, but we call it the phoenix eye fist. I find that I am able to throw it with significantly more power on a bag by making that proximal phalanx of the index finger completely straight and in line with its metacarpal. The thumb offers compressive support to the index distal phalanx while also pushing down on the middle finger knuckle effectively connecting the two.
I also find the same concept true for the tiger paw shown after. At least for me, straight proximal phalanges pressing into each other is the way to go. If I have the knuckles at an angle find I am dividing the force - half going up the fingers toward the metacarpals and the other half going to the supporting thumb. The problem is that just like the mistake mentioned at the start of the video, the thumb is not suited to taking an impact like that. Less dangerously, the muscles of the hand are not being used optimally because I would be essentially asking them to hold the force of a punch at a 45deg angle. If your fingers are strong enough to do that, first off I don't believe you unless you're Jeff Dabe (an arm wrestler with a finger circumference of 5inches) and second, they are strong enough for you to punch in any bizarre position you can make up.
Force travels in straight lines, so if you make a straight line for it to travel in, it will. With both punches you can do that by straightening out the relevant area - just as you would a wrist throwing a normal punch. The force travels through the finger, hand, wrist, and then safely into the arm. Try them on the palm of your other hand, they may also work well for your hands. For me the difference of how much force I can safely express is immense - easily noticeable.

This is super detailed. Could you actually send a video of it possibly. I'd like to make sure I am understanding you correctly. DM me on Instagram if you can. Appreciate the comment.

I have no problem throwing full force shoken punch on heavy bag or bob dummy.
I can throw full force boshiken strikes into makiwara, bob dummy and have used it to effectively strike a man in his neck which dropped him.
I've used shoken punch full contact into men's torso , aiming for solar plexus, liver and ribs. . .They can't endure that punch.
Perhaps everyone's hands being constructed differently causes some strikes to seem impractical to some karateka.
Every human is different and we're all built differently.
Not everyone can perform shoken knuckle pushups but some men can.
Some men claim it's fake when we break coconuts with a shuto strike simply because they can't reproduce what they see us do.
But many strikes require years of devoted, religious, proper conditioning to effectively apply them.
Wolff's Law is a real thing and it's at the heart of Okinawan kara-te.
Also, some strikes generate more power by snapping the strike with quick retraction upon impact whereas others have more effect with time on target.
My shoken punch is exponentially more stable and stronger than haraken.
I can not strike a bob dummy full force with haraken but I can go full force with shoken.
      Everyone is built differently.

Jack Dempsey talked about hitting the 3 because it aligns with our arm which he demonstrated putting his knuckle against a wall. I wonder if that applies to bare knuckle or only when wearing gloves 🤔I just started Uechi earlier this year but did some kickboxing training over the years.the thought just occurred to me as I watch this

That's an interesting point. I do think it probably applies both ways

Okinawan Isshin Ryu also uses a vertical fist punch just like Jack Dempsey espoused and old English pugilists used.

Давно говорил что в каратэ кимоно не нужно, его японцы придумали, чтобы в состязаниях у дзюдоиста было преимущество. Да и пояса черные таскают кто попало.
