I know it’s a _loooong_ video…but poor Minion was in terrible shape and our little outboard needed some professional help. Plus, there’s always the distraction of #BoatLife throwing a water leak in here and there 😱
If there’s something special from the vid you want to know more about, or if you have some tips for Inflatable Dinghy Cleaning and Outboard Motor Maintenance, we’re all ears. Share below and it not only helps us, but sends good vibes through the community.
As always Nikki’s prepared a post on our website if you want links, additional thoughts and stories: www.gonewiththewynns.com/boat-back-to-life
A special shout-out to our Patreon’s and the peeps that support our productions through our Tip Jar: www.gonewiththewynns.com/join-us You help keep these videos flowin, and for that we 💘 you!
Cheers Everyone, we’ll see you next Sunday-Video-Funday 🍻

      I'm cool with longer video's!
Also, holy crap, Nikki needs to be in a 2 piece more often... Maybe for the ladies, have Jason take off his shirt too, he's not big, but he's hella lean, as a dude I'm jealous. You two are just the cutest couple. I just miss Nikki's short hair from the RVing days, that was so cute!
Gear lube: Couldn't you have filled it from the upper hole? On automotive transmissions and gearboxes the upper hole is literally called the filler hole.
Water separator: Typically cars don't have water separators on the fuel because the amount of water isn't usually significant enough to make them worth the cost or effort. If some water gets into the fuel lines and goes through the injectors then it will just get turned into steam inside the combustion chamber and vented with the exhaust, so no problem. In fact in some heavy turbo systems water is intentionally injected into the cylinders to decrease cylinder temperatures. I could theoretically see it being an issue in a wetter environment like Minion, or on a much smaller motor with higher compression where there just isn't much room for water in the cylinder. All that being said though, for under $50 I'd have done it too just for a bit more peace of mind.
And your tech dude was right, I'd have just started up Minion's motor without a second thought after it sitting for a year, Yamaha does good solid stuff. You probably could've run it off year old gas with no problem. Doing the motor oil change was definitely worth the effort. Good job on everything Minion looks almost like new, that's impressive.
Tackling the dinghy: Yeah, that was :-) Y'all are so often clean and professional, it's nice to see a bit more realism.

Instead, they show bad with the good, like poor Jason getting sea sick. The channel is full of realism, and it really is about the people they are. Noticed in your blog post about the e-bike, that the seat (saddle) is uncomfortable. That is probably an easy enough fix. Most bike saddles can be swapped, and oddly, the more "bare bones" the saddle, the more comfortable it is once you've broken it in. A big padded saddle tends to put pressure on soft tissue, while a minimalist saddle will keep you on your sit bones. There may be a few days of sore tushies while you are breaking them in, but smaller saddles are they way to go.

Jason, your oil filler pump kit looks similar to the one I use to use on my Mercury. If I'm not mistaken, it should include an extender that fits on the lower end of the pump stem that allows it to reach to the bottom of your oil bottle. Also, you might want to ask the Yahama shop if he carrys the plug screw for your motor that has a little magnetic component that you put in the lower hole. It collects fine metal fillings that tells you if your lower end gearbox is needing attention before the gears wear out.

Another good trick to keep water out of the fuel system is to just keep the fuel tanks topped off as much as possible. The majority of the water contamination you'll get in a fuel system comes form humidity in the air, when it cools at night if the temp drops below the dew point it will begin to condense on any surface it can (inside of the fuel tank that's exposed to the air via a vent). Since water is heavier than gas it will run to the bottom of the fuel tank. Many fuel tanks will have the fuel pick up slightly above the bottom of the tank so that sediment, water and other contaminants can accumulate somewhere without being drawn into the fuel system and thus the engine. Check if your fuel tank has a drain at the absolute bottom of the tank, below where the fuel pickup is for the engine. In the aviation world its something you do before every flight to remove contaminants. TLDR if you have less air volume in the fuel tanks, that's less moisture in your fuel system, keep 'em topped off.

Kelton Rochelle That makes sense ,I used my boat nearly everyday ,but after a surgery the wife wouldn't let me use it for a month ,i left the vent closed on the tank and when I checked the fuel ,it had water in it ,not much but still enough to ruin a good day ,so obviously my tank must be venting somewhere else. Anyway back to using it weather and wife permitting as much as I can ,and using fuel regularly so shouldn't be a problem.Cheers from down under.

The ONLY nautical term I know...
To be “three sheets to the wind” is to be drunk. The sheet is the line that controls the sails on a ship. If the line is not secured, the sail flops in the wind, and the ship loses headway and control. If all three sails are loose, the ship is out of control.

We owned a Zodiac YL480DX RIB for about 15 years and early on I fell in love with a product called 303 UV Protectant. I bought it to protect the fabric on the air chambers and sure enough it kept them fresh and supple without a hint anywhere of hazing, cracking or drying out. When we sold it after 15 years of sitting in the hot Georgia sun it looked brand new. I noticed that after wiping it down with the product that the tubes felt super slick, almost like they had a teflon coating. As it turned out, dirt and mold just had a hard time sticking to the surface. After sitting in an open shed for 5 months every winter, it would come out looking terrible covered in a blackish mold like substance as well as baked on pollen from the normal environment here. 90% of this would simply rinse off with a garden hose and the rest could easily be removed with a light pass with a soapy sponge. I'd wipe it down with the 303 every spring after washing it and again before putting it in storage in November.
This is a video I made with the boat after about 10 years of use ... you can see what shape it's in ... czcams.com/video/Ts73mRt7DUg/video.html

    A miracle-worker as far as cleaning things go, here is a really great, enviromentally friendly recipe for a cleaning solution (I'll translate it from swedish);
    vinegar (12%) - 2 dl
    Water - 3 dl
    dishsoap - 5 drops
Mix together in a spraybottle, spray and let sit for a couple of minutes; scrub away. This is originally a window cleaner but can be used for cleaning the shower and all kinds of things - cleaning wood/an old deck is easy with this
The vinegar would be white/neutral vinegar for you outside of the realm of 'ättika' (which we call neutral vinegar in sweden and we have a higher acidity on it so the amount in the recipe might change for you - only saw 5% vinegar from heinz when I googled.) Remember - vinegar is an acid so be carefull and check the percentage so you don't damage your eyes/skin when handling it. (vinegar/ättika is available in 24% and 12% in swedish grocery stores - user discression is advised!)

@@michaelrice500 Or a complete new fuel hose assembly (it's the rubber that dries out and cracks). The water pump rebuild is a good idea also. If it were me, I'd pump a small quantity of oil down a spark plug hole and pull the engine over slowly a few times. This is normal for a four-stroke engine before long term storage. I'd also check the control cables for corrosion and binding. I don't recall seeing a video where Jason & Nikki did preventative maintenance before leaving the engine behind. I don't know if their Yamaha is fuel injected or not and if it is, they should check the vapor separator and clean it and if it is a carburetor model they may need to clean the carbs and slow speed jets. The four-strokes due to their frugal nature with fuel also then have emulsion tubes with very tiny air bleed holes that can get plugged very easily. Even if you run the engine out of fuel, there is always residual fuel left in the bowl so that should have been drained before departure. I've serviced engines that have been submerged before and can attest to their resiliency so they shouldn't have too many issues.

@@michaelrice500 Before they were direct injected, the carburetor versions would dump 30% of the raw unburned fuel directly into our waterways (hence that pretty rainbow sheen on the surface behind every two-stroke). Even now, after cleaning up the hydro-carbon emissions (unburnt fuel) they still lubricate themselves with a constant loss oiling system. Roughly 6% of the 2-stroke oil injected into the engine is burnt in combustion and the remaining 94% of the oil is discharged right into our waterways. They have always and still remain a scourge to our environment.

What about, after draining the oil, replace the bottom plug, over fill through the top, remove pump, mess at will without risking losing to much oil, and replace the top plug once it stops running out. One could also measure the correct quantity in a jar if that pump cant reach all the oil, and that would save a lot of mess, and, anxiety 😉 !

A dingy and electrical tip. Whenever you have to pull a wire or tube from point A to point B, and there is a chance that you will have to return it to the same place or add additional wires or lines in the future, add a small, strong line to leave, something like fishing line may be good. When you have to add another line, pull successively larger lines through with the fishing line until you can pull the fuel, water, or other line or electric line through. Don't forget to put the fishing line through again when you finally pull the needed line through in case there are more lines needed in the future.
