I believe it’s appropriate for parents to receive punishment for this case given these very unique circumstances. What concerns me is the case precedence that will be set going forward and the lack of discretion that may be used in future cases that won’t necessarily warrant parental liability or criminality . I am a parent and some things I am not in control of when it comes to my daughter’s decisions once she steps outside. She is 17 years old. The law should be extremely specific when treating parents as “co-conspirators” to decisions made solely by their capable children especially when we live in a society that has my daughter sign consent forms giving me permission to sit in on her doctor appointments in states like California. Can’t have it both ways.
