    5.7 Starter replacement tip:
    Loosen passenger side motor mount and jack up engine on that side. This allows starter to be removed just above frame rail. No disconnecting exhaust, coolant lines, etc.

    I changed my starter on my 2007 5.7l Tundra (200k miles)with the help of my Dad with no car lift. We had to disconnect the exhaust pipe in order to get the old one out and the new one in. Heat shields were not replaced. We could not get them back in without bending them out of shape. Oh well truck has been starting for the last 20k miles with no issues. Great video Peter. Thanks!

    Before replacing your starter, be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that your starter cable coming from the positive terminal of the battery is tight. This same exact thing happened to me, then I replaced the starter and the problem still was there. Found that the starter cable was slightly loose and had surface rust that prevented it from making full contact. After tightening, my Tundra starts like a dream again.

    • @FredTheLutinoCocatiel

      Brushes still have limited life on any starter before friction wears them down.

    • @ejesoriginal
      @ejesoriginal Před 3 lety +1

      Agreed. High resistance from loose, broken or bad connections will smoke the starter at some point. Also lucky it didn't damage the alternator or ECU. I think i would have replaced those cables while in there. Sort of looked like maybe he did, but could not tell. Someone has definitely been hard on that old girl.

    Yes, some mechanics prefer easy oil/filters changes, tire rotations and such.
    The diagnostic should have included either an oscilloscope current trace, or at least voltage drop (minimal if the electromagnet in the starter is good, but not the electric motor windings), to ensure that you were not just throwing parts at it.

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd Před rokem

      Good point, in an ideal world clear diagnosis requires a loaded drop test of B+wire, S wire, and ground. This is normally easy to do even with a test light, it takes less than a minute for the four steps. However with the very difficult location, even to get to the starter motor requires about an hour of work. A pro shop will avoid blocking the lift until the replacement starter is at hand. So many if not most pro shops 'cheat' by making an educated guess before the starter is exposed. It is incorrect, but practical. Knowing the quality of aftermarket starters, I would want proof. This is where qualified DIY effort shines, because you don't have to pay for labor or time and you don't need a shop warranty.

    I replaced the starter on my 08 Sequoia. One thing I found that makes the starter replacement easier was to loosen the front differential frame mount bolts and using a ratchet strap wrapped around the right side of the diff. housing I was able to pull it forward, that gave me more room to remove the old starter and install the replacement starter. I think I had to remove the right side bolts, they were all easy to access.

      @@TheMechanicj: there are much better and less expensive alternatives. In a shop where I managed, we used the large solder in place posts with one threaded stud. We used a MAF torch to heat up the main cable to the starter and then attached the other cables on the eyelet with a butterfly nut. They typically sell those terminals at Napa. Corrosion prevention is key to maintaining those factory cables.

As for the rust, I always laugh because you don’t know how good you have it in California. In the upper Midwest, trucks rot out fast. We call a Tacoma a taco because some split in half like a taco. The money your customer paid for that starter replacement was well worth it as that truck may last much longer. I find it funny that people in southern California buy new cars; why.

If you don't have a rebuild shop near you, seriously consider purchasing a Denso starter since they are the OE manufacturer of Toyota starters. I don't do Orielly or Autozone since the internal parts are not up to OE specifications. Best of luck.

    You can also get it out by removing the down pipe. A lot easier.

    I have 98 4runner sr5 with intermittent clic no crank but engine starts after 2 or 3 tries... usually in the cold morning. Starts first time the rest of the day. New battery and good connection. I suspect starter relay needs replacing. Can you show how to remove the starter relay with out damaging it? I displace the clip on the side of the relay but it won't pull out.
