0:05 I found a new sunflower cut-out substrate! I don't like how cut-out shapes have a "crafty" element to them, so I am going to elevate this one by placing it on a Pebeo Liquid Art Panel substrate.
    Sunflower cut-out www.hobbylobby...
    Pebeo panel www.dickblick....
1:40 I prime the panel edges and sunflower with Kilz primer to seal it. Later I went back and added a coat of white acrylic paint to the frame.
2:10 While that is drying, I take one of the prepped substrates out of the embroidery hoop and trim it. It is going to need a little bit of reinforcing as it is somewhat flimsy without the support of the frame.
3:28 Evaluation of embroidery hoop mosaics so far.
4:44 Using thinset as my adhesive, I pipe it onto the little substrate, then add beads one by one. Next I switch to a bead tray and dump the crushed glass onto part of the center. Then line by line I build up beads and glass. In the center I dump green crushed glass. Each time I save the extra and pour it back into the container.
6:27 I start building the leaves using the same technique as before, following the grid layout on my substrate with the tiny glass tiles and faceted cube beads. At the end I decide to add blue for the sky. Done! Sparkly! Next I coat the back with thinset.
7:33 What did I just make? Not sure. It was a good exercise and reminder not to use beads with thinset. Not sure I like the glitter effect of the crushed glass.
8:43 To recover from that thingy, I decide to make a floral pendant in an elongated heart base. I make a yellow focal flower and then just follow my instincts, adding daisies, pink flowers and blue salvia. It's beautiful!!!!
10:54 Back to the sunflower cut-out mosaic. Using Liquid Nails, I adhere the cut-out to the Pebeo base.
11:32 While the Liquid Nails is setting up, I decide to make another pendant. This time I'm using some GIANT Old Mexico filati petals that came in a mix I ordered from DiMosaico. I add some of the bigger leaf filati they sent me as well. The center is hand-pulled red filati.
12:35 FINALLY! I start on the new sunflower. Using Weldbond, I raid my feather-cut scrap bags and use them to make my sunflower.
13:19 Time for another pendant! I LOVE making these. I like to start and sometimes end my day by making a mosaic pendant. This one is a big square bezel. I decide to use one of my pendants as inspiration, just switching out some of the flowers. I also add some small white flower shapes. Another winner! Yay!!! It's so pretty.
15:30 Back to the sunflower. I finish piecing the petals and make some decisions about sky color. Choices are:
    1. Sky blue light streaky
    2. Equally pale, more purply
    3. Same as #1, only more dramatic streaks
    4. Clear opal cobalt blue streaky - striking!
    5. Darker and streaky, but too much baby blue in it. (Removed)
    6. Solid baby blue - Um....no.
    7. Youghiogheny neo purple mottled - YES! It is in between the others in tone, but a bit on the purple side of blue. Nice medium blue, will make the yellow flower be the star of the show!
    17:53 Stem and leaf discussion
18:05 Filling in the sky, I immediately realize it will be too flat unless I change up how I lay the glass. I opt for a more interesting uneven stacking.
20:01 Time to grout. Starting with the background, I am using Smoke Gray Spectralock I pre-mixed grout. The petals will have a custom mixed grout color using Rainbow Colorants from Karen Sasine. mosaicmentorin... I use my favorite finishing tool that I have modified by cutting off one side so I can fit in the tight crevices.
NOT SHOWN: The amount of detail work needed to clean up the grout around the edges of the petals.
22:05 My favorite part - adding the beads for the center of the flower. I opt for gray Apoxie Sculpt since the oolors are a bit light with yellows, gold and pale green.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 164. Thanks for watching. See you next time!

I like that you reversed the process in that you did the beads last on the sunflower. Looked like it was easier to grout. It was interesting how you picked the background color. Putting the different hues of blue right beside the flower showed which complemented the yellow the best.

I was so satisfying to put in the beads as the last step! Grouting the edges of that flower was no picnic though.

I love the center of the new micro sunflower, eventhough it was messy! You could use it as a focal point or as part of a new mosaic, have it be kind of 3d with it sitting a little above the rest of a mosaic. 🙂 I love the new pendant, the blue and white flowers look like lupine to me. I love the cobalt and white for the background of the big sunflower, great contrast! But the lavender is nice, it's a pretty color.

      @mazzonimosaics8222  Před rokem +1

Re: the background color, I loved that one too! It really boiled down to whether I wanted the background to be as bold as the flower and complement it or just fade back and support the sunflower as the focal point. I think both would work well!

@@mazzonimosaics8222 I get exactly what you mean. I love the blue and yellow together, but maybe in another project, there would have been too much going on in such a small space. The lavender did allow the yellow to stand out. I like the lighter color beads you used in the center this time, also.

I finally tried a project with apoxie clay last week. There is definitely a difference using apoxie versus glue!! I will try apoxie sculpt this week to see how that differs, as well. Your videos are so helpful and inspiring! Smart to do glass/glue/grout first!! Love everything in this video!😊

Love this. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to mosaic around my fire pit with dragonflys and flowers . Any tips? Need to figure out the grid backing and best products to use around heat. Thin set, grout, will be using tempered glass chips and regular mosaic glass. I like to paint the tempered glass pieces to get just what I want. Worked great on a mirror frame.

The big detailed florals take about 1 hour 20 minutes. The smaller ones are usually under an hour. I have been pulling filati about once a week for an hour each time to get my greens and blues. Having a space dedicated to it is great, but I will be cleaning it up soon for my next BIG project.
