Worked with a deaf person at Walmart. That was almost 20 years ago. He taught me some things. All I remember is frog. Mostly because I thought he said the f word. I remember walking inside to see a woman yelling at him as he was bent over trying to find something under the counter and he had his back to her. I simply said ma’am he’s deaf. She thought I was lying and asked for the manager. Some people.
when i was volunteering when i was 15, i was trying to help a man who was deaf with his phone. i actually wrote down the instructions for him and a few minutes later someone he knew who could sign came over, annoyed, and scolded me for doing that. she told me that most people who are deaf can’t read English. i was devastated lol. idk why she said that

so my brother was really confused on how the deaf community connects ASL to reading the english language. it makes sense to him on how someone who became deaf later in life knows from their prior learning of ready when they were hearing, but he was wondering how someone who may be deaf from birth would learn to read. i assumed that its similar to how parents teach english (word to picture/pronunciation association) but instead of sounding it out for the child they connect it the best they can to an ASL word (i know meanings aren’t perfectly 1 to 1 but it’s pretty close in some occasions). i guess i’m asking if associating written words with a similar ASL sign is how they teach reading to the children who are born deaf? i’m trying to learn ASL because the whole topic interests me!!
The earlier the better the results. The parent must absolutely learn to sign as soon as possible. This is critical in their ability to understand a language. Once you can communicate you can use word association and tools such as phonetic wheels (used to help those that have speech impediments) to convey how letters combine into words. Basically you are directly relating the letters and words to the visual idea instead of how the vast majority of us read which is to imagine the sound of the word which then links to what the word means.
This comment is old, so I'm not sure if you still want an answer: Yes, in the past schools have attempted to visually represent English with sign systems such as Signed Exact English among other methods. This has had mixed results. ASL remains distinctly different from English. Many of the grammatical features of English are unnecessary in ASL because it utilizes 3D space and does not have the same limitations. It is both possible and reasonable for a Deaf person to learn to read. In hearing schools, phonics is primarily used to teach this. However, phonics is not an optimal way for Deaf people to learn reading because they're deaf. So using techniques that don't rely on hearing to teach reading is a thing that should probably happen (but somehow is not understood by educators).
Bruh how are they ignorant, if your optimal way of communicating is speaking and a deaf person approaches you Is not crazy unheard of to say"oh well you can read, right?" If you first ASSUMED they could speak why would you assume they could read
