  • Highlights of the Littlewoods (League) Cup 3rd round match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield in November 1988. Two great goals, from John Barnes and David Rocastle (RIP) respectively, meant a 1-1 draw. Liverpool eventually won in a second replay at Villa Park.
There are already highlights of this game on youtube, but these are longer and better picture quality.

John Barnes never gets the credit he deserves top three players in the world between 87 and 91

It was watching Barnes that showed me how football should be played. The fast quick passes even into the box. What an art!

The European ban came at the worst time for a lot of players of that era. That Liverpool side with him, Beardsley etc would've smashed it in Europe.

Great goal by Barnes but the way Rocky puts his laces through the ball for the equaliser has me purring every time I see it

A very underrated Arsenal team. This game illustrates that they would be worthy champions that season against a fantastic Liverpool side.

It just strikes me now that this result must have given the arsenal confidence to go and win at Anfield 6 months later in May of 1989.

This Liverpool side between 1985 - 1991 could have easily won another European Cup such a shame. When you look at some of these players playing for Liverpool.

Worth pointing out that it was The Arsenal that “knocked them right of their f***ing perch”...and not Yanited.

@@zansportsnewstv473 Yeah they traded the title for the next couple of years. Both were great teams. My point still stands though.

@@mr.realist2395 leave brian marwood alone, he was a very good striker, and he spent two year's at Arsenal, and back then in that era, you had a lot of good striker's in the Arsenal squad such as charlie nicolas, niall quinn, kevin campbell, paul merson and alan smith, so it was very difficult to get matches consistently.
