- Our Second Cousin uses the documentary format to ponder the idea that a day could become special simply by recording it and declaring it so.
This thought-provoking 29-minute documentary explores the power of perception and the impact of storytelling on our view of reality.
Set against the backdrop of life in London on December 2nd, 2022, the film follows the journey of a curious interviewer as they delve into the minds of the city's residents, using their influence to see if they can convince people that the day is indeed special. The result is a captivating examination of the human psyche and the role that words and images play in shaping our beliefs and experiences.
So join us on this journey as we explore the question: "What if a day was made special simply by recording it and saying it was so?" and discover "What Looking Gave Us."
It’s crazy how one video can help me look at life differently. It just makes so much sense, yet so hard to grasp
humans are so beautiful, so complicated, so diverse. so many philosophies to reflect upon. essentially, we're all going through something, aren't we? all these people are strangers, and yet we're not so different after all. each of them said something about their lives that resonated with us all and made us feel connected. we understand each other, unconsciously
I love that in a single 20-minute video you can change the perspective of thousands, that with one video you can make people think in different ways or even change those "common ways of thinking"
the whole idea of “if today was my last day would it be enough” is something quite thought provoking. how are we truly meant to make that shift from just living to get by, to living to make the most of life?? at what point do i feel accomplished and satisfied yk. amazing video!!
I don’t know why but the man tap dancing while answering your questions, giving some kind of rhythm to his words made me feel so inspired. This is such a beautiful documentary!
My day wasn’t special until I watched this video. I’m feeling very anxious and weak lately, not confident at all, but I’m not missing a video. Every week I’m learning to accept things and to grow with them, those people helped me today to be better tomorrow. I’m seeing and feeling things differently each week.
This video is special to my heart so thank you for making those videos Jamie and a huge thank you for making my day special.
Its interesting that Jamie went around talking to people about there special days! 😊
I said some of this in the premiere chat but there's not many characters there so I thought I'd write an extended version here:) feel free to share yours! it was great hearing about everybody's experiences and perceptions
I have ADHD and as a result I experience really bad time blindness. sometimes weeks go by and suddenly it's the new year and I only had a day to see it coming. I don't always have the luxury of knowing what day it is when I wake up (without having to check and remind myself of any key dates surrounding it, for context of how much time has passed versus how much time I feel like has passed). I literally live day to day most days, I live like everyday is the most important one bc it's the only moment my brain allows me to see sometimes. I also have a severe dissociative disorder (depersonalisation-derealisation disorder), and I spend 98% of my time dissociated and have been for the majority of my 23 years of life. I learned how to live in a world that can easily feel numb, one where my senses are dulled and I lose track of time in a heartbeat. I fixate on things that give me dopamine and sometimes I make the wrong choices because of that. but mostly it means that the "smaller" joys in life have grown to mean something more to me, because at the end of the day, in this moment, they are all I have.
the snowflakes that have frozen in my ice cream, the way the sun hits the glass balcony at a certain time of day, the way the cold air bites my cheeks and makes me feel something properly. all of these moments mean the world, and the permission to feel them at any given moment makes each day feel special to me. if I look towards the sad parts of my life, all I will see is regret and choked frustration. so I choose to see the better parts, even if I have to actively remind myself of them. choose to see the better parts. to me, wealth doesn't look like possession. it exists in an abundant experience, one of saturated joy, one of hardships, one of determination and one of acceptance. an endless surrendering to this moment, not knowing when it will end but knowing that it can change and grow and that you have a power to incite that.
lots of love everyone, and thank you to our second cousin for facilitating this conversation
i want to thank you for helping me see the world through a different lens in every single one of your videos, i think the message is clear here and i so needed to see and hear that, because every day and every one of us really is special x
This documentary will stay with me for a long time. My mind was in overdrive all day today but now I feel at peace. The chaotic thoughts and voices have quieted down and now I have all this room to reflect and just… be, I suppose. And not worry too much about tomorrow. You’re doing something really special here, Jamie. Thank you for taking us along for the ride and opening our minds one video at a time. I’m very excited to see where you’ll take us next!
Okay I've rewatched this many times and it physically and mentally changed me and my whole view on the world.
so excited for this video! Jamie your talent and passion for film making is so inspiring. I enjoy your youtube videos so much!!
This is such an inspiring documentary. Whether it be good or bad days, "You" make the day special. It's a magical message. ✨
This just makes you see life in a whole different perspective like you thought you knew everything and then you watch this and suddenly you realize you didn’t…. I don’t know if that made sense but right now I’m literally at a loss for words this film is so inspiring.
This short film was so inspiring and profound. So many different people, so many different impressions and thoughts… a special day is what you make it special, what you want it to be special. Thank you for sharing!🙏🏼
my cheeks hurt from smiling, seeing so many perspectives on life and what makes a day special :) this was beautiful

The movie is awesome, it really had me talking to my wall expressing what I feel on this matter and answering the questions given in the video. Had a really great time having a monologue with myself, but it made me realise what a “special” day means for me, and the thing that I understood is that it’s either your choice to make a day special or just a matter of a chance and situation and the main thing is that to feel that “specialness” of a day you have to have empty, boring, uninteresting, monotonous and routine-filled days and it’s okay to have them because non of us can’t live out live like this day is our last and sometimes (most of the times) we need to face this boredom to really experience this amazement when something special happens in our life to really appreciate the moment
The world gives us a special day 🌳🌎

thank you for this beautiful video jamie .it made me feel that we have to appreciate every moment and every hour of our lives. hearing people say what they think a special day is made me talk to myself about it, it's very comforting to know what it means for yourself to have a special day
The differences in perception is a special thing on its own.

Good job Jamie👏🏻
Sorry English isn’t my first language so I hope I can make myself clear 😊.
I love the phrase “Beautiful things don’t ask for attention” James Thurber.
They don’t they actually don’t ask for you to look at them but once YOU decide to notice it is a whole change on your perspective to your day, yourself, the world as it is. It all depends on us, so as I’m saying this I decided today is a good day because I say so.
I see you all and I hear you all….
Thanks for making this day special!

It’s very interesting to see how much people from other countries value health and life I feel like that’s something Americans take for granted and I wonder if the healthcare system differences have anything to with it
