Incredible exploding Chinese insect (and human) killer. (with smoke)

- It was just a matter of time before something exploded unintentionally, and here it is. A rather bizarre Chinese "Mosquito killer" that uses blue LEDs to attract the very rare species of mosquito that might actually be attracted to blue light (none) and zaps it with a 1.3kV electrified grid powered by the most shonky voltage multiplier I've ever seen. I mean, completely random capacitors like some bizarre high voltage pic 'n' mix of misfortune.
So apart from giving me quite a zap when I innocently poked the grid on the unplugged unit with my test-finger (no trickle discharge at all) the unit went one better, and while I was randomly shorting the live (and directly referenced to the mains) grid with a screwdriver, it made a loud pop and smoke started coming out of it.
I then decided to film it smouldering seductively and it blew up completely. The iPad seems to have missed the magnitude of the actual flash and explosion to a degree. It was awesome.
I might actually buy another of these to see it blow up again.
I love your method of testing if a board is discharged "jabbing it repeatedly with a sacrificial finger"
The best CZcams presenters always hurt themselves occasionally. Admit it, that's why you watch!
+Stephen Furr very true indeed.
At least he didn't lick it. Thank goodness for small miracles
All hail the finger of electrical knowledge.
A loose wad of foil is nice if you don't care too much about how the parts feel about random voltages being applied.
Look how safe it is, as soon as there was a fault the mains wires disconnect themselves! High tech!
That is what we electronics men call "fuses." Work plenty lucky!
I first read just "Incredible exploding Chinese insect"
+nrdesign1991 Insects that exploded randomly would be awesome.
+bigclivedotcom We in the states wouldn't even need fireworks for the Fourth of July anymore!
+nrdesign1991 I read "inedible exploding chinese insect"
+Jimmy Puppo No. I tried eating that one and it exploded.
+nrdesign1991 The termites Neocapritermes taracua from French Guiana grows sacks of toxic copper-containing blue crystals that they explode onto their enemies. Older workers, the least able to forage and tend for the colony carry the largest and most toxic packs.
"Electron go out mosquito small a night lamp"
Story checks out.
That's fucking poetry on the back of the box lol
You didnt read the little caution at the bottom “If this lamp work and have mosquito please do not use hand touch.”
"I think that diode's sad..."
Dangit_Bobby I killed it
Dangit_Bobby Give it some Prozac...
Weeping..
Love his accent... :)
Have you ever considered doing audio books for Chinese instructions? Would be a huge hit with the ladies... Great video Clive!
indeed but how the hell do they keep translating things so badly with google translate being so good now a days
Its blocked there.
I think the most disturbing thing is the CE marking on the packaging
Stands for chinese export?
China Equipment
CE marking is an administrative marking that indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within the European Economic Area.
@@Julmaa87 And the China Export marking looks almost the same.
The capacitors are probably recycled from e-waste.
Hi DiodeGoneWild :D
Never really thought about this until now but you could be right... even so it could also be that they just picked some random capacitors from a bucket or drawer and used those! Like a mystery roulette game...
Having said that, I could have easily bought one of these from my local garage sale a few days ago. I really should have got it, shouldn't I? :p
I pulled apart some CFLs recently to get at the little ferrite cores within and liberated the other components at the same time. Having seen this video now I think there's everything you need in said CFL to make one of these shoddy things including the diodes and random capacitors.
@@FordPrefect23 Maybe that's what this thing is made from - old light bulbs.
R. Perkins Reduce and reuse for the environment!
there is recycle then there is retrashing
I love those instructions on imported stuff, as well as the promises of life changing properties. I bought some breadboard that promised "much joy and happy life" .... now you don't get that with Western breadboard! :-)
Interesting Garden variety of coloured Caps in there. Your commentary is usually awesome. keep up the great work. The magic smoke release was epic ! The Caps and diodes should all be the same voltage and capacitance ratings. I know that the Chinese 1N4007 diodes from ebay are a lot smaller then the genuine 1N4007 diodes made in USA.
I find this guy so fucking entertaining :D
i'm sitting here laughing my ass off while watching an educational video, this is so awesome, love this channel! :D
me too!!
+muh1h1 He'd make an awesome electronics teacher. Why is it so rare to find people like this in the teaching professions?
+Element of Kindness Because they get bored, or they reject restrictions placed on them by people who don't know the subject.
same
+muh1h1 me too funny AF but educational in the same regrads
10 dislikes from the Chinese that built this thing
all 10 that make these in the factory.
NOT FUNNY, you guys.
The KIDS/PRISONERS that made those aren’t allowed to SEE the internet.
Merry krampus
Stoopd buhg keelr go boom den smokked fahr !
The capacitors are different because it has to convert to metric voltage first before it raises the voltage. :p
No
😂
Yeah, metric voltage and metric time are difficult to convert accurately😵
@@bruceanderson7762
If you think converting metric voltage and time is difficult, try converting metric condom sizes.
@@kaisersose5549 Aahaha,ok, yeah.
The "Chinglish'" text, read with your rather mellow Scottish accent, sounds SURREAL :)
Engrish.
It was easier to decipher the Chinglish than the Scottish accent.
Every time I start one of your videos I realize how soothing and relaxing your voice is. =)
Learn read "chinglish" you for direction betters so make happiness.LOL
Thank
Chinglish fukn gud
@@m14wdotcom Many happy smile time family
good stuff as always clive. I have also seen more of these random caps in cheap kit these days, someone told me that the manufacturers are actually using recycling components to lower costs !
Oh shit, I can't believe I read the Engrish instructions of this "Electron go out mosquito small a night lamp".
"I gonna reverse engineer this" ... seconds later ... *BANG*
:D
When you say nanofarad, if I'm not paying particularly close attention, it sounds as if you are saying nanofart. I get a giggle every time.
Thank Clive. I found this old video that I hadn't seen. Excellent as ever and interesting. It also interesting how the style of your videos have changed. Please keep up the good work.
"The instructions are pretty spectacular..."
I was not disappointed lol
A lot of things you play with goes bang & emits a lot of smoke, LOL, thanks for some great videos, Clive.
Looked so colourful though, those caps with the colours of the rainbow
Love the Humour and simplistic logical explanations, Had a few cry's ;)
Love this guy!!I'm a techie too ,so I find this stuff fascination! Not to mention that awesome accent!
I once took apart a disposable camera,& Yes the flash Capacitor got me.Very VERY painful!
I just love that Chinese-English translation.
Kzzzzzzzzzt-POP! ... That's more like it.
Hahaha!!!
Here I am, on a quiet tuesday night, when I should be studying... I'm watching a guy trying to figure out which of the components in a cheap mosquito killer has gone bad
right enjoy your videos as I like pulling things to bits keep up the good work gareth
Thanks for the irfanview tip, my mirror track tracing skills will now fade slowly away
I bet those caps are salvaged from scrapped gear hence why they are all different!
4:17 - No more mosquito utensil... :c
man i love rewatching your electrosplotions.
I like how you always start saying "alright so this is ......." 0 time wasted
The closed captions are awesomely bizarre. Full of farts, Montparnasse and jewish people O_o.
Andy B Excellent! I must watch them sometime.
bigclivedotcom "Lunar Cider, mmm" :D
EDIT: No, "Three walks across the alley disables causality" is my new favourite. I had no idea it was a flux capacitor that went pinging off!
Andy B Yes, at around 10.31, "The convicts putting one's and four diodes for two gashes" sounds like something from a 1970's tv police drama (maybe the Sweeny). Gotta love those closed captions.
Andy B Wow, the closed captions are just another level of awesome funnyness...
Bahaha, *noise of removing a screw* = "being a bitch"
Those film capacitors look so much like Chicklets, I just want to eat one.
Those instructions are the best I’ve heard in a long time.
the reason for the different capacitors is because the closer you get to the output terminals the higher the voltage rating of capacitor is needed.
When those multicolor caps were revealed I thought one of your candy videos had gotten spliced in accidentally.
Haha, that's the best video in a while. I love stuff that goes with a bang :)
Definitely wins the colorful capacitor award. Makes me wish I could find such colorful parts for my next circuit board design. That would be good fun.
This started off as an Ashens video.
0-3 sad onions.
A well deserved thumbs up for the bang alone.
Just think if you had one of those going bang, a cheap Chinese smoke detector and a cheap Chinese fire extinguisher. It'd be the most stop start fire ever. :D
"All your insect killer are belong to us!,
Someone set us up the Electron Go Out,
You have no chance to survive, Shi Ba Mie ."

Age of Empires cheat suddenly springs to mind!
Magicians finger gestures for "reverse engineering"
I creased up laughing at those gobbledegook user instructions. Kind of on par with an old comedian Stanley Unwin. Thanks again for another very interesting video.
I ain't 'avin it! Wheres me 'ammer.
Oh man, you let the smoke out of it. I hate it when that happens because now you need to figure how to get the smoke back in....
I just love it when he says "nanofarts"...
That's a great Stanley Unwin impression you did at the start!
I found it quite interesting that at 4:18 when the cap went pop the pulse affected the camera!
Would that have been caused via the back feed through the power supply (mains I presume) or via some sort of mini emp ?
+Wolfy Wolf It may have oversaturated the camera's light sensor causing a line to appear.
+bigclivedotcom Oh.... And there I was getting all excited about emp's and weaponising fly zappers, Thank you for the quick reply.
+Wolfy Wolf In fact, it's more likely to be how the flash of light from the pop looks when captured on a camera with a rolling shutter. The flash happens when the sensor is scanning the top of the frame, but is gone by the time the sensor's scan has reached 1/5 through, and so only a small portion of the image is lit up.
I think its because the camera has a rolling shutter. That means the flash was so quick, that the camera only caught it on the top part of a single frame. But i might be completely wrong.
a fine exemple of engrish instructions. never gets old.
LOL at the method of testing whether the caps are still charged
I like the way you tap the capacitors with your fingers.
Final safety test, touch connectors with fingers. N!⚡️
I have tried purchase this thing maybe a 2 years ago.
We had inside only PCB for LEDs and metal plates was just directly connected to the 230Volt mains.
I destructed it immidiately and put to the e-waste container.
Love the 'CE' mark on the package.
Oh no! You released the Magic Blue Smoke!!!
Voltage until it pops .... I love that troubleshooting method.
I was too terrified to watch this - for fear you got seriously zapped at some point.
You let the magic blue smoke.out before you started recording?
Those instructions on the back are probably more lethal than the product itself, I gave myself a stroke trying to read them.
A huge bug was trapped in my old Sears bug zapper last night, I think it arced for about 30 minutes.
“I’m going to reverse engineer this circuit board”
Sometimes, out of frustration, I do just that. Device keeps blowing fuses? Replace the fuse with aluminum and find out what blows out in smoke. There’s your fault.
I love the simple Design. With good components, this would be a nice device...
can you please type out all that engrish that you were reading, that sounded hysterical. I wanted to share this with my friends
When you read the instructions I had to zoom in to the video to make sure neither you nor I was having a stroke...
They probably bought capacitors from several factories that had failed quality control. Factories usually sell off failed electrical products so that they can be recycled, since they often have valuable metals inside. However, the ones that work somewhat are resold and only one that are completely dead are recycled.
This reminded me of those Chinese ultrasonic emitters for pest control. Would one of those things be worth a take down video?
If you want to discharge small capacitors like this then a stainless steel pan scrubber with plastic handle can work wonders.
What frightens me is I have no problem understanding instructions.
wow they must've used bing to translate those instructions lol
I bought one of these about 2 years ago, and it is still new in the package hanging on a pegboard with my "collection", just gave it a wary glance... (I'll have to move if from the antenna dept to weapons).
You'll notice that costs were cut when safety came under consideration. It's their way. I'm surprised the wire grid wasn't connected directly across the mains.
the instructions are brilliant!
wow that description on the back was hilarious, that's the type of thing you get when trying to translate something through a dozen intermediary languages in google translate.
For shorting capacitors out i do always use a sponge which is only wet on the downside. Easy and fast contact to all solder points. Doesn't even need saltwater, just tap water is sufficient.
Tap water is salt water, eg. it has lots of ions in it. Purest water can be found at powerplants in the steamy part that goes trough the turbine to turn the generators. But even that is not true pure water. There's two physical/chemical effects working there: 1st any impurities in the water will form glass deposits on the turbine blades deforming them and causing all kind of havoc. 2nd pure water is acidic, because autocatalyst in water produces OH- and H+ ions and H+ ions being light are more active than the OH- ions. This corrodes the turbine blades and causes all kind of havoc. So it's a lose-lose situation.
BigClive. we got a Chinese, egg incubator the instructions were pretty much understandable. it looked cheap too, though worked perfectly. could you get one and pull it apart? would like to know if it's safe.
I could send you mine. but don't blow it up.
In the USA in the Pacific NorthWest, we have the rare mosquito. I have a US version that uses a tube instead of LED's. Started years ago using one when tent camping to clear out the tent by running one with an inverter for about 10 minutes to completely clear the tent for the night. Still have the unit in the motorhome for the same use. I would like to find a US version with LED's instead of the tube.
I'm enjoying your videos. it's like ken Bruce doing electronics
steve grover hnn
Hnn sorry don't understand
4:25 is about what I had happen with an original Xbox PSU a while back. Had a nice failure at the solder joint for a capacitor.. sounded about the same too. Don't know what happened there, but at least I got it replaced.
Would that make the effective capacitance about equal to the smallest one ?
If that is the case, Whats the chances of it still working with comparable but a totally new selection of random caps?
damn did they buy the skittles pack of capacitors? wtf.
I watch this channel because it makes me feel stupid. I never know what hes about to say or do next
We only see his desk... not the fire station right behind him ready to extinguish him, his desk, the room, the rest of the building if need be.
I have had one plugged in for 3 months an no bugs or flys have been zapped by it ,so does it work ?
could a small isolating transformer be added along with better component parts
I enjoy your videos.
"Anyway, I digress...in an amusing manner"
I'll steal that line and make it mine...!
I wonder if using a piece of steel wool would be good at shorting out caps. Guaranteed to get all the connections.
have you ever played with one of those electrical bug swatters... they are crazy. they are shaped like a tennis racket and output a few kilo volts. it is actually a nifty little circuit, just a transformer and a little 500v poly cap IIRC.
0:25 - Listening to Clive read that section gave me horrible memories of sitting in English class in high school trying to understand old English passages from Chaucer. Very horrible memories indeed.
And Shakespeare, and complex poems that didn't actually rhyme. Absolutely nothing to do with speaking normal English.
The best Stanley Unwin-esque, Chinese gobbledigook, non-translation ever.
You are so funny . I love your vids
The instructions are almost worth their own video!
Have you ever thought about releasing a "Best of Chinglish" book?
Best of Engrish.
