  • Are other father and other wybie created by other mother or are they originally from somewhere else?
As we know the other world In Coraline is a very mysterious and scary world that has stirred up theories for a total of 13 years. While most people are focused on the cat, coraline never escaping, beldams transformation, and the bugs. I think people are overlooking something else.. the other father and other wybie.

I’ve just realized something too. I’ve always wondered why the other Wybie wore a mask over his head right before saving Coraline from inside that mirror. It’s probably so the other mother wouldn’t be able to “see” through his button eyes and foil his plan
PS, I think the other Miss Spink & Forcible say “thief” instead of “please”

The Belldam made other father and other Wybie. Other father is a pumpkin and other Wybie is probably a doll stuffed with sand. My theory of why these two are specifically more helpful to Coraline is because those two were modeled after people who cared for her. Obviously Coraline’s dad loves her and Wybie wants to be Coraline’s friend. The others are essentially strangers. Maybe when the other mother made other father and other Wybie they gained some affection for Coraline that the real life versions hold for her.

Maybe the real reason that other wybie was muted was BECAUSE he told the cat about the other world, and the other mother punished him by removing his voice.

I think the power that the Beldam sucked out of the kid's souls leaked into her creations. There were 3 kids, yet only 2 of Other Mother's creations displayed free will. Wybie showed the most free will, and Other Father showed a little less. No others showed free will. So I'm thinking, the longer the children's soul was trapped in that world, the less willpower they had. Kinda like being in prison, you lose sense of who you are and you lose faith in the chances of ever getting out. So Grandma's missing twin sister couldve very well have taken over Wybie (would make sense too because theyre of the same blood). The small boy couldve been within the Other Father. He'd been in the other world for a long time, but not nearly as long as the pioneer girl. Lets face it, after a few hundred years in that cold damp room, Id give up hope too.
I dont think a normal human can survive being in her world for long since we conform to certain rules of reality. That'd take a huge toll on Other Mother to keep them alive as well as herself. She would also need to continue keeping them alive for an unknown amount of time because theres no telling when the next meal will come. Grandma was clearly very elderly when Coraline arrived, so it mustve been decades of no food for Beldam. Starvation makes one rush and so she mightve been unable to keep 100% control of her puppets. I think they were made of the same sand she filled in the spying doll too which could be made from souls.

Other theories suggested that Wybie and the Other Father are more conscious and moral due to having more 'soul sand' (I'm sure you've come upon this theory before)
However, your theory makes much more sense in them actually being empathetic and forced to do the other mothers bidding. The video was made beautifully and had valid points, no 3 hour regurgitated theories. Love it!

I honestly believe the Beldam could lure in adults. I think she prefers children because they are more dense in life energy, but that she might accept an adult if it suits her needs or if she needs a quick meal that's easy to convince. It's harder to say no if you've seen more of the horrors of the world than a child has. I think she avoids late teens like the plague though, since they're so often rebellious just for the sake of it and she craves control. The other thing I think is that if she could shape a child to look like another child, then why couldn't she shape a child to look like an adult? This would explain why it was so easy for Other Father to tap into Coraline's childlike sensibilities in a way her real father tries but ultimately fails to.

I’ve seen a similar idea to this before, in reference to the book. The Beldam took three children before Coraline encountered her, two girls and a boy. The human characters are two women and one man, Wybie excluded because he’s not in the book. This theory suggested the humanoids were made from the bodies of the past kids. I think I favor this slave theory for the movie.

The last part is confirmed, Adults CAN get trapped in the other world, We know from the ghost children that the dolls are her eyes. (Coraline never really took the doll outside so it doesnt know what the world outside looks like except from the pink palace and thats why its all white and empty, Anyways.)
And coraline found dolls of her parents under their bed, Its a sign that the beldam spied on them and planned to take them too.

The way that I see it, the, 'Other' characters have ran on this sand like substance that is the thing that gives them life (such as when we see the mice turn to rats, sawdust comes out of them and even Other Wybie has sawdust as a hand at one point) What this tells me is that the more amount of sawdust is used on a figure, the more life they have, the more life they have, the more freewill they have. And because Other Father and Other Wybie are KEY people in Coraline's life, they require the most sawdust in order to maintain and have that emotional connection. I mean, with this logic then Bobinski, Spink, and Forcible should've all gotten equal amounts since Coraline knows them personally but they're not. Only Rats and Taffy.
So in short, the sawdust that the Beldam uses is the one that gives these characters life and the more life put into the character, the more freewill they have

When me and my friend were in primary school, I asked the question about how The Other Father and Other Wybie had a lot more free will than the other copies. My friend suggested that when the Beldam created them, she gave them too much power of free will to think and do things on their own. And if I’m correct in the novel, there’s a mention of how the other copies were made from soul sand something like that. Which is weird cuz I’ve only read the graphic novel and there was no mention of that

It could also be the stronger her pawns' minds are, the stronger the toll is to keep them alive as her power drains because, for example, maybe that is why YB’s was the first to disintegrate. The other father was seemingly already deteriorating mentally as well. The stronger the consciousness probably makes it easier for them to rebel, and maybe since the beldam knew Coraline would interact with them more, it made it so they were naturally good.

and it also makes sense the beldam uses a praying mantis as a robot/vehicle because mantises in real life are known to really hold on to their meal when eating it and she did the same when she built the robot one when she was having the other father control it because he was forced to catch coraline with the mantis arms and probably serve it as the beldams lunch or whatever

Great theory but I’m pretty certain Wybie is a child...? He is never shown as an adult. So I’m not sure how/why Other Mother would be using him like she’s using Other Father instead of just eating his soul like the other children’s. Wybie is most definitely supposed to be a child. He talks like one, is the about same height as Coraline, and still has to be home at a certain time because he lives with his grandmother.

wybie from the real world is a child yes, but in the other world every person there aren’t the real people. They are all being transformed to look as if they are people from coralines life. So what i’m saying is other wybie is an adult who is being transformed to look exactly like wybie. The other mother can make anything and everything look different to portray the world and vision she wants. Thank you for ur input and kind words i appreciate you, hopefully what I said made sense:D

The witch seemed rather maticulous in her work. Especially after having practice with the other three children. I always interpreted other wybie & father as being made to care so much, due to how well she can copy life. They'd go against her will to fulfill their purpose they still have hearts but she molded them. She uses their souls to maintain her creations since before the kids she likely started with the house only. Eventually getting to the neighbors, garden if she had two more souls im sure she would have reached past the well. She's not lazy but simply cant sustain her youth creations and living beings all at once stretches her too thin.
Neat theory though i did enjoy it just my perspective is all 🎉

Wybie dont exist in the book but I think the other father, other spink and other forcible is the earlier kids corpses who for a long time have been used as puppets of the Beldam and have been more and more destroyed buy it with time. In the books it seems based on the ghosts words that the boy have been dead longer than the others and the plausible boy corpse (in the book) is way more destroyed than the girls.

@@maximoesco In the book, one of the kids who was a victim of the Beldam was a fairy, who, in the movie, was replaced by Wybie's great-aunt. This does spark some theories that Wybie himself is a fairy, or is a descendant of one. I do think that the Beldam had more victims in the movie compared to the book, since we see a photo of a boy and a girl who look nothing like the ghost children. In fact, I do think the boy painting could actually be one of the older victims.
I do think all of the creations we see were the bodies of the Beldam's previous victims, and it's easy to tell by lookin at their designs. I do think in the movie, the Other Wybie was the body of the real Wybie's great-aunt, since they're related. The Other Father is the boy who calls Coraline "Mistress", due to the similar hair style. And the screaming girl could very well be the Other Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, since it's revealed they were actually one being split into two.

Theres a theory or maybe just my understanding that Other Father and Other Wybie appear to help or have free will as a manipulation tactic... i also personally think they are all extensions of the Beldam as opposed to seperate entities. I feel like shes interwoven into everything in the other world because sometimes objects like the paino and furniture move .... almost as if the whole of the other world is a living thing. Also the portal from the door in coralines world and the other world looks alive .... lmao idk maybe im tripping

something that might be interesting to add is what if their ability to rebel has to do with age. wybie is younger then the other father which may be why wybie is able to resist more, the other father is younger than the other people there but is still older and can't resist as well. just some thoughts. they are all human it's just older people can't resist as well. it explains why the other father and wybie have the same deterioration as the other people living there and everyone has a true form.

Other Ms. Spink and Forcible’s monologue quoting Hamlet, “What a piece of work is a man. How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and admirable! In action, how like an angel! In apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the world, the paragon of animals…” They didn’t finish the quote which would’ve told you, in Hamlet’s full monologue, everything after and before the quote they use, he’s describing how the world is hollow. How its wonder is an illusion. This isn’t a monologue about the beauty of the world, it’s a monologue about how that beauty is false, because all the world is only dust. The “quintessence of dust,” the most beautiful possible dust, but only dust.

Other Mother kidnapped her parents. Who is to say they aren't another kids parents who just never came back to rescue them. Like wybie's grandmother's parents.
Like she lost her sister and parents because she got away. And is now why she doesn't rent to people with kids.

i'm a firm believer that even the seemingly human empathetic characteristics of the other father, the other wybie, the ghost children, and even the cat are part of the other mother's plan. the cat is the most ambiguous (there are theories that the other mother turned wybie's father into a cat and forces the cat to work for her to protect wybie in the real world...idk abt this one) the other mother's already established that her powers expand beyond what we're led to believe because she can obviously easily interact with the "real" world. even if she loves a challenge, why would she leave such glaring loose ends except to distract coraline and make her think she has allies, despite that the other mother literally created them? why is coraline immediately so trustful of these characters when she's just learned that everything she thought she knew about this "perfect world" is far from what she thought? how can she discern what's real and what isn't at this point? tricking coraline into thinking she has allies only makes it easier to lead her further into the other world.
the other wybie pushes her to go back through the door, but we can't really trust anymore that the door leads back to the real world. how was he able to pull her out of that room so easily in the first place? if the other mother created him, how would she not know he could do something like this? i just think she's far more calculated and cunning that she wants coraline to think because she wants coraline to think she has a fighting chance even when she doesn't. also, from what we're led to believe about how the house itself works, there's no guarantee that the door even leads to the same place twice. she could literally just be going further and further into the maze and at that point, it's just a game of cat and mouse.

One thing I've always wondered since I was a child and first watched this movie, before seeing all the theories, is where did the conscious beings come from? Other dad and other wybie... And why use ones that have their own consciousness? Like the belle dame just used weird candy creatures for spink and forcible, & rats for bobinsky, so.. Why are O/dad and O/wybie different?

Im thinking maybe the Other Wybie was his grandmothers twin. Makes sense as in the first scene she empties & refills her old doll with sawdust to make a new one for Coraline. Wybie shows why he cant go with Coraline (blows his hand away).
Dad is obviously a pumpkin, his magic fades as the Beldame weakens showing his real form. Soul mightve come from the other girl that wasnt Wybie’s aunt.
The rats/mice’s magic came from the little boy (Huck Fin Jr.). He’s sheepish & quiet in tone similar to a mouse. They also had the saw dust.

    I agree that other Wybie and other Father are real souls, and I think they’ve been there for a long time because;
1- The cat said to Coraline about the place not being a dream come true because “other Wybie told me so” Why would the cat need other Wybie to tell him anything? The cat has been there for years as the Beldam has “been trying to get me for years” as he says.
This leads me to think that other Wybie has been there for ages just not as other Wybie and as the original soul.
That leads me onto my next speculation:
2(a) Due to this we can assume that the Beldam fashioned the original two souls into other Wybie and other father just for coraline right? Wrong. While I think this is true in the case of the father since he came to the pink palace with Coraline, I think a key point in noting is that the Beldam made other Wybie silent. She muted him before he could even speak to her- yes we could attribute this to what he said to the cat but I think that would not have been enough.
2(b) I think that the soul in other Wybie was given Wybie’s form by the Beldam before Coraline’s arrival. A key theory that I agree with is that Wybie’s grandmother purposefully sold Coraline’s family the house so that she could save Wybie.
I don’t think the only entrance to the other world is in the pink palace, I think it’s highly likely that the well is one too. A well Wybie seems interested in- he told Coraline about the myths about how if you go down deep enough you can see a sky full of stars in the middle of the night.
I think that Wybie’s grandmother not only sold the house as an attempt to save Wybie but as part of a deal with the Beldam- (This will link back to other Wybie I promise I just have to explain something else first)
3: I think that in the grandmother’s worry for Wybie, hoping that he would not befall the same fate as her late sister, the grandmother made a deal with the Beldam to sell the house to the next family with a child that wanted to buy. Sure maybe it could have been just an attempt only on the Grandmother’s side with not interaction with the Beldam EXCEPT, her little sister’s doll. In the very FIRST SCENE we see in the movie the doll floats through a window to the Beldam. The little spy.
Why hadn’t the Beldam called it back already? Why had she not fashioned it into a doll for Wybie and tried to take him? Because his grandmother still had it. The only thing left of her sister. And I think that’s the means she made the deal through. I think she figured out what happened to her sister long ago somehow and sought to stop it happening to anyone else, until Wybie was born. Her grandson. And the Beldam was getting hungry. I think the deal was made so that when the Beldam was ready for a snack and Wybie’s grandmother had found a potential buyer, the grandmother would send back the doll ready to fashion into the doll of the next child the Beldam would eat.
And where was that new Coraline doll found according to his letter? IN HIS GRANDMA’S TRUNK!
    It was purposeful.
4- Now my final point is that The other mother in the time she was growing hungry, waiting for the Grandmother to secure a family with a child to sell to so that she could eat, grew bitter that she could not have Wybie. I know this is a long shot but hear me out. I think even though not a long time before but still before Coraline’s Arrival, the Beldam fashioned the original trapped soul into other Wybie out of spite or hunger or just for fun. She was playing with her food in a way. The food she couldn’t eat.
Now FINALLY I think the reason that Wybie was not allowed to talk was because the Beldam was also still spying on real Wybie even while he was with Coraline. And that’s when Wybie started to talk about what his own grandmother told him he “wasn’t supposed to talk about” - The fact that the pink palace was dangerous and that before Coraline his grandmother wouldn’t sell to anyone else with kids.
The Beldam may have been influenced by hearing this from real Wybie, she couldn’t afford the other Wybie to spill anything more especially when he had a track record for telling the cat about how the world was not a dream come true.
And since she was trying to create the perfect world to entice Coraline, she couldn’t let the one Coraline hear’s this from be other Wybie as this may have lead her to think back on what real Wybie has said (not knowing that they’re two completely different people entirely and not parallel versions of one another)
    Ok that’s it.

Intentional or not, the plot and symbolic elements (feeling oppressed and trapped after choosing to sew buttons over your eyes and live a fake life because it seemed better than the real one) work well as a painful metaphor for maladaptive daydreaming.
The grief when you finally want to inhabit your body again and be fully present for tasks and interpersonal interactions but the addiction to the fantasy world makes it feel impossible to force yourself back to your senses and important mundane thoughts entirely.
After you do fully re-engage, fantasising spontaneously happens throughout the day, you catch yourself bringing your fantasy back and mixing the two, not feeling immersed in the daydream or in reality but half in each.
If it was intentional, the end might simply represent that recovering maladaptive daydreamer experience of not being able to fully engage with reality yet, still having fantasy competing for your attention during activities that are not suitable for off-task mental activity.

Sorry for this, but the word you wanted to use is *inhuman* and not *inhumane* …
About the Beldam, though, there’s just one thing that doesn’t make sense. Since Coraline doesn’t really like any other the other residents of the house, why would the Beldam go through all the trouble of recreating them? She manipulated Wybie ostensibly because Coraline found him annoying (which, if you think about it, is really cruel) and only created a portion of the outside world for her to experience. What I’m saying is, if she needed to conserve her energy, you would think that she would just leave the other residents out but also that controlling a real human soul would take more energy than just using a puppet.
Also, if the Beldam can just force Coraline to stay with her and forcibly sew the button eyes onto her, why didn’t she just do that when Coraline went to sleep in the other world? Why bother with the whole charade at all? The less information she has, the lower her chances of escape. I may be missing something about why this isn’t the case; I haven’t seen the movie in a while 😅😅
