As a KC fan for over 45 years, to answer your question... Yes we care about the regular season. The journey is the part to enjoy, we don't focus on the destination. Going 50 years with so many heartbreak moments from Joe Delany dying, Blackledge being a bust, Elway ripping our hearts out time and time again, Joe Montana getting cuncussed in the AFC Champ game, Derrick Thomas death, Trent Green's no punt playoff loss, a decade of mediocre coaching, Belcher out front of Arrowhead, blowing a 28 point playoff lead against Colts, Titans QB catching his own TD pass to loose in the playoffs, KC going 4 almost decades without a KC drafted QB winning a game, So YES we true Chiefs fans watch and appreciate each and every game because we know from experience nothing is promised and every game of this Dynasty counts. So again the journey is to be enjoyed more than the destination thus the regular season counts for true Chiefs fans, and what true Chiefs fan wants to miss any game Mahomes plays.

I’m a Chiefs fan, and to answer the question from the opening, yes the regular season does matter to me, but not for the reason you think. When I was little I used to dream that we could just get one Super Bowl at least once in my life, and now we’re a dynasty with a no doubt first ballot HOF QB who isn’t even 30 yet. But one day Kelce will retire Reid will retire and so will Mahomes. I Watch most of the Chiefs games because this is the height of the franchise and I don’t want to miss it. And no I’m not anxious about anything because a few years ago we watched the Bills take the lead in a playoff game with only 13 seconds left I began mourning our lost season, and then we won the game anyway. I made myself a promise that day I would never doubt Patrick Mahomes again. Growing up my friends and I would make fun of Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle for being really bad every Monday after the games. So yeah I’m going to sit back and just enjoy greatness while it’s here. If you’re here you probably know about Tom Grossi our favorite Packers fan, and after either SB 55 or the AFCCG we lost to Cincy he tweeted out an Office meme from the episode where Michael films himself in the woods that I don’t exactly remember what the meme said but the point was “The Chiefs think they can rebound and win the Super Bowl next year but the Packers spent most of Rodgers career thinking the same thing but they only got one ring.” This success was never guaranteed. Mahomes doesn’t need to pass Bray for me to call him my GOAT, so I’m going to watch every week, so in the future I can tell kids what it was like watching him the way I was told about Len Dawson and Otis Taylor

    Nick Wright said this perfectly.
Since Mahomes has taken over, the Chiefs have never lost a regular season game that meant something. Their last three losses in the playoffs have been in the Super Bowl and OT of 2 AFC championship games that they were at home for.
Until they lose a game in the playoffs where have they won one more regular season game could have affected it, regular season is just practice.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W Před měsícem

For a championship caliber team like the Chiefs, they should treat the regular season like practice. Which is where the evolution of the Chiefs running 2/3TE personnel in condensed sets grew as an answer for defenses zone exclusively vs Mahomes. It has the obvious run block element to get Pacheco pushing forward for yards. But it bunches the defense up together so they don't have the space to catch the speedsters motioning in the back field. Or to effectively jam Kelce, Gray or a receiver on the line from their release.

I'm a 55 year old Chiefs fan who saw my first game at the age 5. I remember watching when TV was black and white, and the picture was fuzzy. So I consider myself a "real" Chiefs fan lol .... I care. If you want to really be an historic team, you need to have the best regular season record, and back it up with a SuperBowl. If you don't check both boxes .... just another Superbowl team. Brady said he would trade two other rings to finish out that perfect season. And Mahomes cares too, I can assure you. Winners care every time they step on the field. Watch his body language one some of those drops, from last year, when he slaps his helmet. Those losses HURT him. Even in the regular season.

Anytime the Chiefs game is available in your area, it really is must-watch TV. Fan or not. Either you get to watch them lose or come from behind to win, and you get at least three individual Mahomes highlight reel plays. It has strong Jordan/90's Bulls vibes.
Most people see the plays he makes in pressure situations, usually in the playoffs. But that dude makes head-shaking plays on 2nd & 3 in the second quarter of Week 7. Eventually, those legs won't work like they do now, and he may not have competent coaching later - so, appreciate the planets aligning while it lasts. Even if you're hate-watching.

  • @harrymills2770

As somewhat of a geek (not a scholar), I've been following the KC team builds for decades, and I liked their 2023 build as much or better than any other build, back to 1969. It was a little lopsided in favor of the defense, but it was also improved on the offensive side, in spite of the loss of Juju Smith-Schuster. Yeah, he was their #1 WR in terms of yards, but he wasn't really scaring anybody.
With this team, it's less about what you see in regulation as it is about what you see them building toward. The drops were bad, but they were getting the looks they wanted, and they had a lot of different ways to beat opposing defenses. As in 2022, when this or that corner got hung out to dry, I could see where they were going with it, and it was just a matter of when it was going to gel, or at least what their ceiling would eventually be, and whether they looked like they were on a trajectory to peak, later.
Even in the devastating loss to the Raiders, the only TDs given up were to the defense, once on a mix-up in the backfield for the scoop and score. Once on an ill-advised throw by Mahomes for the pick-6. But for two massive and uncharacteristic blunders, they would've won that game, 14-6, and possibly by a wider margin if they would otherwise have scored on one of the drives that ended in turnovers.
Looking ahead to 2024 season, I think the new WR talent is going to get all the attention, but to me, it will be less about their fantasy stats than their health down the stretch. Sammy Watkins was pretty injury-prone at his previous stops, but KC kind of babied him, and held him out of games if he wasn't 100%, and didn't go to him as much as previous teams tried to. They didn't care about his regular-season stats, but they did a great job ushering him through the entire season in one piece, and playing at his peak down the stretch.
The Chiefs are all about the long game. They keep a LOT of things close to the chest deep into the playoffs. They're not like a lot of other teams that have an obvious template for winning that suits their personnel. The Chiefs, on the other hand, have a different blueprint for every team, and that blueprint changes on the fly during games, themselves, and they have the kind of smart and versatile players that they can change things up without missing a beat.

At the halfway point he will talk about the players “taking care of their bodies and supporting their team mates”. Then in the last few games of the season he will focus on winning the AFC west and getting home field playoff games. LRZ should be a wild fantasy pick imo. Louis is internationally proven. He seems like an all round athlete to me and probably played cricket, field hockey and soccer as well as Rugby Union ( Mailata is Rugby League which is a different type of rugby) when younger. He is young and has chosen to leave a lucrative career to play in the NFL. That's ballsy. The Chiefs signing him is about as good an opportunity for him as it gets. Honestly worth a late round pick as ball in hand he is a weapon. He is versatile and could be deebo esque.

My guy football skill and Rugby are completely different it’s like comparing baseball to golf both require hitting balls with a stick but they are not the same. LRZ still runs with his pads super high, doesn’t look fluid catching the ball, looks awkward holding the ball, needs to work on his pass protection in the backfield and he missed out on about 15 years of fundamentals so let’s not overlook that. He’s very fast but speed doesn’t make you a good football player. He’s tough but toughness doesn’t make you a good football player. I hope the kid makes it I really do but let’s pump the brakes on the hype train till we at least see him in a preseason game. My prediction he spends the year on the practice squad and then we see where he’s at next season.
Also lucrative rugby career? The highest paid rugby union players make about the equivalent of a practice squad or league minimum NFL player. The highest paid Rugby player in the entire world makes $1.2 million a year. LRZ made 225k a year playing rugby. So if anything he is getting a pay upgrade not a pay cut even if he doesn’t make it in the league.

Mahomes is going to be chucking it this year. Even in OTA's, Andy Reid is digging into him every time he checks it down he says. Big Red has a TON of new plays like every year, and Mahomes says a LOT of them are deep passes. And weapons are much better....last year they tried to make Toney the WR1....The fact that Mahomes fell in BB from the 1-2 turn to the 5th round this year is maybe the biggest value in BB this year. So in over 20 years those ~900 yards, ~80 catches and 7 TDs are the ceiling, and I genuinely doubt Worthy is getting as many targets as Rice got as a rookie simply because the pass catching group around him is expected to be better.
So when he isn't Puka Nacua and is statistically around 8th or 9th amongst rookie WR by the mid way of the season and the "bust" label is being thrown around, again, remember that.

As a KC native and lifelong chiefs fan, i can assure you as much as we enjoy the success of the team we are panicking over just about every game. As much as the mahomes era is great, and we are 100% the team to beat right now, there is too much failure in our past before mahomes to not have some sort of anxiety about every season. People are gonna scoff at that but you gotta understand before the 2019 season we hadn't won a super bowl in 50 years and had some absolutely embarrassing playoff defeats. So yeah, I definitely care about every game on this run because eventually it will end and I wanna enjoy every second of it. Also embracing villainy helps, its way easier to rub it in other teams faces now lmao.

If your team has the talent to be in position for consistent success like that, you have to embrace the villainy. Raiders fans for eons ago just kept repeating 'Just Win Baby' all on the ghost of three SBs they have won. They couldn't keep the Pats out of their mouths in the 2000s all while that team would run amok for competitive success in two decades.

only bad things can happen during the regular season. Andy Reid's genius is that he understands this to a degree few others do. While the Cowgirls and Blackbirds are running up the score on bottom feeders, padding the stats of their star players for after season accolades, Reid is resting his players and keeping 80% of his playbook locked up in Fort Knox.

Also...Sneed was arguably the best cb in the nfl last year. But doesn't get much credit. He shutdown every elite wr he went against. And finally IMO kc had the best defense last year. Balt had a schedule where they went against more bottom tier qbs.

Slightly disappointed neither LRZ or Matt Araiza were mentioned... Like both of them are quickly becoming Chiefs Community off-season golden boys. Also the points you made about Rehkow don't really make sense considering they had signed Araiza already in February (!) and Rhekow was actually released mid-June...
As I see it, wether or not we 3-peat will depend on 3 things:
    1) Wether or not the current LT situation will work out. Right now it's either Wanya Morris (3rd round pick last year who got a few opportunities last year but certainly didn't convince) or Kingsley (2nd round rookie). I get we have a great OL coach in Andy Heck but it's Patrick's blind side we're talking about...
    2) How well we can replace Sneed. That's the most disrespected outside corner in all of football they traded away! It will be fascinating how Spags and Dave Merritt will tackle that and I have every confidence in the world they will but it's certainly still a question mark...
    3) How good the receiving will turn out to be. It's certainly upgraded from last year, but if you miss Rice for at least a couple of weeks in the beginning of the year it's still a questionmark how everything will gel.
Combine these three things on any other team and people would frown like "let's wait and see how good they are". Apparently having Patrick Mahomes makes up for a great deal. I get that's true to an extent but the fact that they were largely ignored in this episode annoys me. Why be so nonchalant? Don't get me wrong I love this channel and especially this series. I've watched every episode so far and probably will watch all the remaining ones too but this episode kinda was a disappointment.

I do think the team as a whole has gotten better, but I have my doubts the defense can match what they did last year. I am going to enjoy every second of this team. I am hopeful. I prefer they get back to scoring 30 points a game... I said it 2 years ago and I will say it again this year... Two new receivers in an Andy Reid offense with Mahomes as QB and no real film for defenses to study until around mid-season... Hill left and Juju and MVS stepped in... Mahomes went for 5000 and 41 on the way to his 2nd League and SB MVP... Two new speedsters with little to no real film to start the season and even with the defensive changes, this is still one of the best in the Mahomes era... I can see another 5000 and 50, or maybe break Manning's record with the extra game, on the way to a 3 Pete... Just My Humble Opinion based on stats and facts...

    • @jeffmiller7817

GOAT QB is an individual thing and SB rings are a team thing... Mahomes 2nd SB proves that... He was the best player on the field according to the BUCS players (see NFL top 100 Mahomes number 1 video for 2020)... At the end they interviewed the BUCS players with additional sound bites from the game claiming how good Mahomes was playing and best player on the field type comments... But Mahomes o-line was down to 2nd and 3rd string and his receivers had the drops... So rings are a "team" thing... Brady has played in 48 playoff games and Mahomes has played in 18... Mahomes numbers crush Brady's and he is already breaking Brady playoff records, proving Brady's runs were more team dependent... Throw in all the Marino, Stabler, Brees and all the other records he's broken except rookie, and they are not Brady, Manning, Favre, Rodgers or any other gunslinger / top QB that came before Mahomes, because they didn't break them first... Mahomes is on pace to get Brady but he is chasing records also, if he wins 3 in a row he will be the GOAT, and he is also going for Manning's yards / TD's in a season... I consider Brady the Bill Russell of the NFL and Mahomes is the Michael Jordan (AKA GOAT)... Just My Humble Opinion based on stats and facts...

How many teams were there in the league each time the Packers threepeated? Did they have a salary cap to contend with? Did they have to win at least 3 playoff games each of those 3 seasons in order to come out on top? (I'm pretty sure that one of their two threepeats was prior to playoff games being played at all. I might have those years wrong though.)

@@dfp_01 They are counting a championship before the Super Bowl existed. They didn't even play the AFL teams.

I'd prefer that the Chiefs had the #1 seed so they have an extra week to heal up.
