For more than 20 years I worked in the construction trades. It was often how I paid for new tools for my woodworking. So When my oldest daughter asked me to help them install a gate in their existing fence, I though I could take that opportunity to make a how to video.
They have an older home with a six foot cedar privacy fence in the backyard. There is an area that needed a gate, as the old one had broken long ago.
In this video, I cover step by step how we built a new gate and integrated it into the existing fence.

Love this helpful video! As I'm about to begin my project, though, I'm wondering if I can use the same method if I want to build a shadowbox fence and gate? Just wondering how to place the pickets correctly so that I'd be able to "cut out" the gate. Suggestions?
I noticed your socket was coming off repeatedly. Get some electrical tape and do a wrap where it meets with the socket. Squeeze the trigger and let the driver do the wrapping for you (taping the adapter and socket together). Socket won’t come off anymore. When you are done reverse the drill and pull the tape while unwinding.
I love how youre so reasonable and caring for your kids... The world needs more of you bro! GJ dad!
Love the life hacks! I never would have thought to build it all attached and then cut it loose after installing the hinges. I was stressing building a new gate, not now. AWESOME!!
Awesome having your kids involved. They’ll remember this moment forever.
I can honestly say I have never thought to hang a gate like that, makes perfect sense, great video
Hi Gary! Thank you!
I have to tell you: your video is refreshingly clear, easy to follow, and motivating. I don't know that I planned to build a fence/gate...but I expect to do so NOW! Thanks!
Thank you. You’re very kind.
Thank you so much. I'm a novice; never did learn carpentry but after I price a fence, I decided to do it myself. These videos sure are a life saver so you get a thumbs up and subscribed.
James I've said it before but it's worth saying again. Your Family values are outstanding as are your woodworking skills.
Thank you. You are very kind!
Your many years of experience doing real carpentry really show in your techniques. Keep up the great work.
Thank you.
Damn you got 3 people putting 1 post!!! I had just myself lol
THANK YOU!!!! Have been meaning to rebuild my gate for (far longer than I care to admit on here) and finally did it! I did it using your method, and it is level, no hanging, no binding, just smooth! Thank you!
Thanks so much for this how to vid. Helped greatly for me. One note: the latch you used can be taken apart and reversed so that the locking side is on the inside of the gate. Also, you can flip the mechanism upside down so it rests on the latch most of the time preventing sag (for sloped gates). Great vid and thanks again for your effort.
Thanks for the excellent videos. I think it is great how you are passing this skill down to your family! Something I'm trying to do as well! Thanks again!
Thank you very much.

By far the best video that I’ve seen for making a gate. Thank you so much. This was sooooo helpful!!!
James does it again! Nice work. I ended up putting the spring loaded hinges to close the gate automatically. Well worth the money in my opinion- especially if you have dogs.
BTW, if you have sagging issues down the line, using a turnbuckle with some 1/8" wire rope from top hinge to lower corner will repair and prevent future issues.
Hi. Thank you, and thanks for the great tip.
You saved my life with this video thank you. Well done my friend! My gate started sagging right away though and it rubs a bit but I'm not going to redo the end. I should have left a bigger gap where it closes.
Thank you very much!
I found this video at exactly the right time. Have to replace 2 gates and 8 foot fence panels next week! Good vid, kept it simple.
Thank you for making this video!! This was so good and helped me and my son with our fence project. You made it so that anyone could follow alone and build a fence!! The gate came out great!
Well done vid! I am building an identical gate and fence. For those watching and reading this; if you want to dress this style of fence and gate up just a bit you can run a 1 x 4 across the top on both sides and cap it with a 2x4 or 2 x 6. That will add weight to your gate so plan accordingly. I would also recommend always using metal poles. Anyone who’s ever dug holes for posts will tell you you only want to do that job once! Great vid.
Thank you!
This is how DIY videos should be made with all the tips and tricks you need to know along the way. Thanks
Thank you. I was having such a hard time finishing the fence when it came to the gate
I think your best advice was the cone around the base of the post. I set fences and build gates once in blue moon as a handyman. However, I don't have any help so I defer big jobs. Since the guy who built my neighbors fence never came back to finish installing the gate, my neighbor hired me to do it. Now the span was two great to use the house to hinge it with and or hinge it using the the end 4X4 securing the fence. So with a 6 foot span, I chose to use a 4x6 anchored around 30" down with 1.5 bags of cement. But before I set it, I mark just above the base of the 4x6, pull it back out, then using some painters tape and some cheap roofing tar, I smeared the base with it before putting it back in the hole. 13 years later, my gate is as solid as ever but the fence is a mess. More than half the posts rotted at the base and the sagging between the spans was embarrassing because the builder didn't use not diagonal center supports, or turn his 2X4's vertically
Hi Robert. Thanks, and thank you for watching.
I don’t know if you still read your comments, but I’m going to write it regardless. This is top notch work! I’m “sorta” handy, but building a gate has intimated me. I have one that’s sagging and butt ugly, and I’ve wanted to replace it for years. THIS video is concise, accurate and worded excellently for novices. Thank you! Now, I guess I’ll take out a second mortgage on my house before heading to Lowe’s to get some outrageously priced pickets and 2X4’s. 😂 Great job!
I do read the comments.
Thank you! 😁👍🏻
Such a detailed description. Thank you!
Great DIY video. Thank you for posting this. It’s very helpful and clearly explained.
A billion videos later and FINALLY some tips I needed. Thanks!
Thank you very much!
I like the idea of cutting the gate out of the fence after built. Gonna do that tomorrow! Except we are dropping ours to 5'6" and putting lights on top of the posts! 😁
Great video, thanks for sharing it was exactly what I was looking for!
Seriously elegant procedure in the steps. There's always more than one way to skin a cat but you don't ever start from the tail
This is extremely helpful. Thank you
This is such a wonderful, wholesome, and educational video ❤ I watched a few other videos on repairing a gate but they were just confusing. I learned more about repairing a gate watching this video than the others.
I also gotta say, you're an amazing dad. I truly love that you are teaching your daughters(and me 😊) how to be more handy. My dad taught me what he knows and its helped me so much. As a military spouse, it really helps knowing how to make home repairs on my own since my husband often is out training and stuff. You're raising strong, independent women 💪🏼 Keep up the good work ❤
You are very kind. Thank you!
The pre drill we call a pilot in Australia 😎👍 really fine work.
Thanks that's really the best and most thorough video on making a gate I have found.
That is the smartest way to do a gate! Well done!
Man has every DeWalt tool made. I like!
Thank you for this video. While my project was not exactly the same, I used the steps to make a 2 1/2 ft gate attach to my garage. Without this video I would have struggled!
Great video, We already installed two panels and now we have to cutout for the gate door.. Sadly it's raining today in Central Florida.. Thanks showing us how to really secure that gate..!
5:01 - That is REALLY good advice! I battle a little depression on a regular basis. Mine is related to teenagers. Concrete is so much easier to deal with!
But seriously, this was an EXCELLENT video! I loved your thorough, easy-to-understand presentation. I've built gates before. They've all sagged over time. I needed your video a LONG time ago!
Very great job and very great team working especially the young girl. she seems that she is talented . . thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Abajh Alghamdi, thank you! And thanks for watching and commenting on the video.
Awesome video format. A lot of great information and very helpful tips. Thank You so much for all the great information
Thanks Thom.
I really enjoy your videos. Your presentation is excellent and explain everything at just the correct depth and speed. I also think the way you involve your family is great. The family that saws together stays together. Kudos.
Nice tutorial. I'll be building some gates pretty soon so it was good timing. Thanks.
Thank you! I hope it helps in some small way.
Thanks simple and to the point
That was a phenomenal video. I learned so much, and loved seeing your family involved. You have so much great experience in construction. However, my favorite thing about this video is your voice, so calm and informative. I’m actually sad that it’s over! I’m building my gate tomorrow, so glad I found this! Thx so much!
Thank you! That’s very kind.
Sounds like he's in love with you
I just used your technique....BRILLIANT!!!!!! Wow, I wish I had seen this several gates ago!!!! Sooooo easy!!!!
I'm replacing my entire fence this week. The old gate was always a problem. Your design will be a great improvement.
I'm building a gate on my new fence today. This was very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you very much for this video. It is a very timely one. I am getting ready to replace a small section of fence, and put in a gate.
Awesome. Thank you for watching.
Thanks! Was curious on how to do it... this helped a lot
Thank you it was very helpful to me. I was building a wooden gate, just like yours. Without watching this video I had no idea how I was going to do it. Thanks again.
Great job, James! looks good. I'm redoing my fence soon and this really helped understand the best way to do a door.
Hi, and thank you!
Perfect, Thanks for the video
Really nice instructional video. You showed every step and took the time to explain everything very well
Thank you!
Excellent video, perfect for what I’m doing! Thank you!!
Thankyou from Australia. Fabulously presented and so informative. So nice seeing your family working together.
I only needed to learn the hinge installation, but I watched the whole video haha very well done. I already built my fence, but this will come in handy later
Excellent job!! We need to do this for the backyard fence.
Exactly the video I was looking for! Thanks for the detail and making it look easy.
Very nice. I like how you speak both to expert builders and to beginners like me. You are a humble man.
Awesome detailed explanation. I was going to pay somebody to do it but I'm plenty capable, just never messed with fences. I'm a new home owner and there's plenty to do so saving $ on the things I can handle myself is imperative. I think I'll save time and buy a fence section and 2 posts and knock this out in a day. Thanks!
Nice job James and family!! Enjoyed watching as always.
Thank you!
Thanks, easy explanation, I feel ready to fix my fence!
Another fine vid James!
And you hit the most important thing, bevel up that concrete so the post doesn't rot prematurely!!!
Here most fence is pressure treated pine. and fences don't last because nobody bothers to do that!!! Glad to see your keeping your crew busy!😀
Haha, thanks!
Amazing video. Got a code compliance from the city re. my new fence and so glad I can easily build in a gate to open it up.
Great video, learned a lot from it! Thank you for all the details.
I love this. I think the best part was teaching your kids how to do it. Keep up the great work.
Great Ideas and solutions! Best video i've seen ! Love the Daughters helping!
Great video, and very timely for me cos I have exactly this job to do. Thanks for the advice.
That is great, I am glad it could help. Thank you for watching.
James, you do outstanding work.
Fantastic job crew thank you
Wow, that was such a practical way to build your gate! I enjoyed that!
Really good tutorial. Thanks.
Thank you!
nicely done man. learned so much from watching this!
I see you use an Estwing 24oz hammer. Good man. mines about 38yrs old and still the best ever made.
Thank you for posting this!!
Thanks for sharing!
Wow. A detailed gate video. Well done. I really enjoyed it.
Really great video and really helpful thankyou. I gonna be starting up as a handyman soon. I enjoyed watching, great teamwork 😀🔨
Hi Barry! Thank you!
Nice to get tips from a pro. So many how-to vids on youtube really show how *not*-to.
Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great explanations throughout.
Thank you!
Fantastic job. Thank you
This is just what I need, thank you so much for this awesome video, now I can build my own gate, and photo boom is beautiful as always.
This video is as fire as the Texas heat bro & for that I thank you.
Thanks for your video. I've always struggled with gates and this was very very helpful.
Love your show.
Next time try self expanding post setting foam. It works great and a lot less mess.
yes very helpful, thanks for making this video!
You are very welcome. Thank you!
Thank you and great video. I watch a lot of DIY videos. Your video is peaceful. I like how you narrated later after the fact and quieted some noise while doing so. Easy to watch and learn. Thanks so much!
Thank you. That’s very kind.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Excellent video. Well presented and thorough information. I learned a lot and will execute it today! Thank you
Thank you!
Very well done, I wii give it a try Stratton tomorrow.
6:50 Have you ever tried using the speed square as a fence? The end of my saw is 1" away from the blade, so I measure 1" more or less than what I need depending on what side I'm cutting it from and put my speed square on that mark.
Thank you! Built 1 of 2 gates, worked great!
Awesome. Thank you!
Excellent step by step.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
This has been extremely helpful. Thank you!!
Great info. I’m glad I watch this. I’m building a gate based on your info. Thanks.
