I had the privilege of attending this great concert that paid homage to Lady Day in 1979 at the Hollywood Bowl. Esther Phillips died five years later of complications from her drug addiction, bless her heart. Maxine Weldon stole the show that evening as I recall with "When the Sun Comes Out". A rare treat to have five legends come together (Esther, Carmen, Maxine and Nina, along with Morgana King, who was left out of the title here). Splendid.
Thank you for posting this. Nina stole the show. I was so impressed that she bowed to her colleagues and they returned the acknowledgment. I truly wish I could see the rest of this performance. Thank you again. Please provide the data as to when and where this performance occured. Perhaps there is a video of the full show available. Thanks.
I was there! I had the privilege of seeing Esther Philips in concert three times, all in Los Angeles: the fist time was this concert at the Hollywood Bowl, then at the Parisian Room on La Brea Avenue, and lastly at the Vine Street Bar and Grill, several months before her death in 1984. I saw Carmen McRae in concert more times than I have seen any other artist (easily more than a dozen times). I actually spoke to her after a concert at the Blue Note in New York in 1991.
Everybody KILLED (they are ALL Killers) but Nina came out there and MURDERED! I would never try to compare these 5 unique powers, but I can't help but notice Nina somehow eclipsed them...HOW DID SHE DO THAT?!! These are 5 STANDOUTS together and all 5 exuding humility and admiration for each other...I was expecting Carmen McRae to be the MVP considering she and Lady were best friends, but DANG Nina Simone...you got it that night. ✊
Now these talented 😍 ladies are true singers. They are story tellers with their beautiful voices. Thank God someone had the foresight to record their performances and thank God You Tube allowed us to see it.
Now these were fine artists and knew how to fill your soul with good music. Their voice were so rich. We were bless to have them here on earth and if you got a chance to see them up close and personal well you were truly bless.
Summer of 78 this Hollywood Bowl event will never forget with Rodolfo love of my life lost to cancer this year we loved DVD and talked about this extraordinary event often we experience all the great Diva's in concert over the years never again...
Nina Simone what can I say...??? My oh my what a Divine being she is💕❤️No disrespect to the other Sistas for they are Divine as well. It's just that Nina Simone was not one who kneels she sang her words from her heart. Not saying the other Sistas did not I am not familiar with them yet.
it is wonderfully good; so rare, this great quality of artistry from beautiful artistes. Why has culture gonw so down and back from these old high standards? Why the decline?
I need to say, again, how wonderful this is, the high standard of tribute, artistry, touch, homage, teamwork within the show, friendly interaction, sheer love. Given the usual problems and shortcomings of offering a live concert of infallible quality, this is so very good.
Wow...Unfortunately Esther was not having a good day, though she is my personal favorite from this group. I bet the backstage crew from these concerts have lots of stories!
Now all of them were in my days with the exception of lady day but NINA SIMONE with her militant songs Mississippi Goddamm! and my don't care and I Love You Porgy now those fine art songs they made me PROUD and Carmen McRae she always had a place on my world of music and Esther Phillips sing I wish you love knocked my socks off I miss all them
3:08 - "..but GOD bless us! GOD bless us! GOD bless us! We've got our own...". Nina was letting them women know that in spite of all the shit they went through with men (record label owners , club owners, band members, husbands, boyfriends, etc.) they had persevered and made it.
What Legends; but they forgot to mention Morgana King Jazz great who played mama Corleon in the Godfather movie. A black jazz singer cast in the role of a Italian matriarch.
Classy,Sassy,Sexy,Beauty,Seduction ect,ect,..ALL IN ONE without coming on the stage almost naked, girating and thrusting their bodies with a BUNCH of backup dancers!RHIANNA BEYOUNCE BRITNEY NICKI MANAJ this is and was TRUE TALENT!!!
This is an incredible historical performance. My pops (I'm 52) loved all these women. Throw Sara Vaughn in here and that would complete his fav women singers. What year was this?
Am I to understand that this all took place one nite at the Hollywood Bowl ? Had I been there they probaly would have had to put me in restraints and remove me from the premises on a strecher. At any rate prior to seeing this video I was telling my wife that I had acually met Carmen McRae and Nina Simone and both were down to earth and friendly; then the video begin with Esther Phillps sounding so much like Billie Holiday I wondered why I had never realize the similarity in their voice and style before. Whoever was "the brain" behind this showcase deserves a standing ovation. Cleo Laine has never been more sublime.
The brain behind this was a man named Jack Sidney 3rd.. He was brilliant. I was his girlfriend at the time and it was an amazing journey to be a part of..Beautiful. strong willed, gracious, gifted women. So glad there is video of this evening in history

What Legends; but they forgot to mention Morgana King Jazz great who played mama Corleon in the Godfather movie. A black jazz singer cast in the role of a Italian matriarch.
That's incorrect. Her stage name was King. Morgana was Italian and her birth name was Maria Grazia Morgana Messina.
Morgana is Italian
Morgana King real name was Messina , she was Italian

Ninas two-fingers up at convention is a delight as always; the others are great too but, in hindsight perhaps, lovely Esther looks lost.
