We’ll learn the basics of how Master Pages work, and then we’ll learn a few practical uses for Master Pages (like adding page numbers and design elements). We’ll also learn how to adjust a Master Page on an individual page in your document, without affecting your other pages. Thank you John! 😊
wow, as simple as that. you have this affinity to present things in clear and intuitive way. Bravo.
Thank you so much! 😊
Very interesting and very well explained. Thank you!
Thank you! 😊
I love your tutorials! Decades ago, when "desktop publishing" was a new thing, I worked as a desktop layout artist and mastered Ventura Publiahser and Quark Xpress, but now that I'm retired and getting back into book design I find that comparable software today is so complicated that I can no longer do some of the simplest things that used to come as second nature to me. I *love* the way you explain basic techniques, without rushing or assuming that viewers already know simple things. I've been enjoying your Photo and Designer tutorials and I'm definitely going to be signing up for the Publisher course.
Thank you so much Lisa! I'm really glad you're enjoying the tutorials. 😊
Incredible. Seriously. Thank you. One question after another answered for me.
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video. 😊
Excellent tips and extremely useful, thank you!
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for a great, easy to understand tutorial. I used to love using the old version of Publisher back in the day and it's great to finally see a modern version.
You're welcome! Have fun with Publisher. 🙂
Bryce, their old Serif version before the rebrand and launch. It was a great program.
Such wonderful delivery - thank you Ally - best wishes to Ezra
Thank you Mark! 😊
As others have said, this was EXACTLY the information i needed. Thank you SO much for it, and covering the info so concisely.

Glad it was helpful! 😊
Ms Anderson, you are one of the best teachers I have. Your knowledge in the subject and your abilities are a real asset. I will take the course you mentioned ASAP.

Glad you like them! 😊
This is an awesome tutorial. I just bought Affinity Publisher recently and started using it. I've created a sample that I like very well, but have a long way to go before I'm ready to start publishing my newsletter with it. I'll definitely check out more of your videos and your publisher guide. I hear there's a Publisher book coming out alsoo sometime. I'm definitely interested in that, plus the Affinity Photo book. Thanks for making this video. Master pages feature is very cool.
Thank you! Glad you liked the video. 😊

Hi thanx for your tutorials! Very clear! Can you please make a tutorial about "HYPENATION" I tried but its complicated.
Good idea!
Thanks for solving my problem. Additional Information I had to figure out: _You cannot choose "Edit Detached" etc. when clicking on grouped items. It only works for the group itself._
Thanks for pointing that out!
Oh, so the master pages technically behave as if they were "symbol" layers in Photo/Designer! Thanks for the tutorial! 👍
Yes, that's a great comparison! 😊
Thanks Ally¡¡
Thank you! 😊
Hi Ally, your tutorial is fantastic. I've been using Corel Ventura for two decades to typeset my books, but now I've switch to Serif's Affinity Publisher and have a question for you:
1) All my text for books are created in MS Word, will I be able tot open/import them to Affinity Publisher or must it first be convert to PDF format?
Affinity Publisher can import Word documents. You just need to make a text frame, and then go to File --> Import. Then place your Word doc into the text frame. 😊
Thanks for a really good tutorial. I have 2 questions. Scenario- you have an 80 page document and most of those pages have multiple masters applied. If I wanted to delete only 2 of 3 masters on only 35 pages, how would you do that without deleting all 3 masters. Question 2, how would you apply that without having to do it 35 times? Thanks in advance
Sorry, I'm not sure. You can ask here though: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
Love all your tutorials! I've recently just got into Affinity Publisher, wondering if you can help? When I export to PDF for print, all I get is a white page... do you know what I'm doing wrong?
Hmm... I don't know what that is.. it kind of sounds like a bug, but maybe something else is going wrong. I'd post a screenshot with your question on the Affinity forums, and see what the moderators think. forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
Can we apply master layers as foreground? I have bottom text in around 32 pages, I decided to draw a white rectangle. But when I apply all pages, the white rectangular appears behind the text. I want it to be in front of it, to hide the text. Master layer by default goes to last layer, I want it to be the top most layer on all pages. Thank you, any help is appreciated!
Go to the page you applied the Master Page to. Inside the Layers Panel, you will see a Group called "Master A". Drag that group to the top, and it will cover the layers underneath it. I don't know of an automatic way to do this, other than the drag the group to the top.
Does anyone know how to print multiple pages on one sheet in Affinity Publisher?
Can you assign an existing page in your document to be its own master page? For example, if I have two pages that I've imported that are dot grided and I want to make them into their own master pages, is this possible? Or must all master pages be designed from scratch?
I would select all of the layers in the page you want to use, and paste those layers into the Master Page. Then you will have turned that page into a master page. :)
@@AffinityRevolution Excellent! Thank you!
Can you transfer a PDF file to Affinity Publisher or Designer just like Adobe.
You can open PDF's in Affinity, and edit the text as well. Some fonts might not load properly though.
How do you create front matter for a book, for example, that will have roman numerals for that part of the book? Is that were "section breaks" come into play? I am going to be creating a book by importing a word document for the body, but I'd like to use affinity publisher to build the masters. I have built books using Word for all the odd/even, pagination, insertions of blank pages and such so Chapters start on odd pages, for example, and it was a nightmare. This looks so much better and cleaner. Or, is this covered in your complete guide?
Hmm.. I might not be fully understanding your question, but if you are wondering how to get some pages to have Roman numeral page numbers, this video will teach you everything you need to know. 😊 czcams.com/video/uulbozUx1Y8/video.html
I don't understand how text flow works. Do I, in Masters, link the text frames, from left to right, and that means no matter how many pages of text I have in the publication's body pages, the Master I have for those text frames will be applied?
What if I have different Masters used throughout the document. How does text flow into these, and how will text flow if I apply a different Master with different shaped or sized text frames?
No, linked text frames in master pages will not link those frames throughout your document. If you want to automatically link a lot of text frames together, you can watch this video (it's part of my Beginners Courser for Affinity Publisher). courses.affinityrevolution.com/courses/598380/lectures/11298534
At about 6:20, when you applied the master page settings to pages 2-5, they only manifested on pages 2 and 4. Why wasn't the blue box put on pages 3 and 5?
On my master page, the blue box is only on the left side of the "spread" (the left and right page put together). So the blue box was only applied to the left side of each spread I applied it to. 🙂
terbaik...
Terima kasih! 🙂
How do I add trim marks on the pages?
Eugene posted a great answer to that on this page: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/66752-pdf-export-and-crop-marks/
Can you insert your word document into Publisher? How do you get your story into publisher?
Yes, you can place Word documents into a Publisher file. I have a tutorial on that topic in my beginner's course. 😊
courses.affinityrevolution.com/courses/598380/lectures/10948386
Hi! How do you a apply master (say a black background made with a black rectangle covering the page) to ALL other pages at once? I have over 80 pages in my document and as you understand it would be crazy to have to drag the master page to each page one-by-one... I can't seem to find this info anywhere via Google search :(
In the Pages Panel, right click on your Master Page, and choose "Apply Master to Pages". Then you can choose which pages get the Master applied to them. 😊
It worked - thank you!@@AffinityRevolution
Hmm...I must have come in late to this lesson...
Missed the part where the multi-page document was created and filled with text...
Was that when the master5 page was created first? And then all the other pages?
Dunno...
Those pages were pre-made, in order to make this video faster.
If you are new to Publisher and want to learn the basic tools of the program, I recommend you watch this video: czcams.com/video/py6fqmvlaqY/video.html
@@AffinityRevolution Thanks much for the quick reply...
All I'm trying to do is format a paperback for KDP...
Nice and simple.
I'm looking for the fundamentals. Just the basics. The ABC's.
Been beating my head against the wall for a couple of days on this...
Very frustrating...
Thanks again...
Looks like two people accidentally clicked thumbs down, they should really learn how to use a mouse.
Haha 😄
I wite pamplets in 4 X 6 size, facing pages. I want to create booklets to self print on my HP ColorLaser Jet printer. I try and do this in Affinity Publisher When I try to get the booklet to create I get a print workflow error. Any ideas there. I also want to learn how to setup ebooks. Any help appreciated. This is for my congregation use not trying to make my first Million, Hi.
Sorry, I'm not sure why that's happening. I recommend you ask on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
When on iPad ?
Maybe next year! :)
Can export to .docx
No it can't.
Hello, you can export PDF and then in a program like PDF element convert to docx, this has worked perfectly for me, I hope you find it useful.
HOW CAN I SEPARATE THE PAGES???!!
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate?
Link not working?
It's working, just press the download button at the top right. :)

Really clear tutorial thank you - would love to know how to set my page number after clearing the master from my front page if anyone can help? thx
Please sort out the mess with foreign languages typed into affinity software.
Thats the no 1 pressing need at the moment.
Pls convey to the developers. Its been pending since 4 years now !!
Sorry, I do not have any control over the developers. I just make tutorials. :)
What's the problem exactly? For which languages?
@@nickgoogle4525 any foreign language typed via the google input tools (phonetic typing)
@@MayurPanghaal Ah, thanks. I'm a quick touch typer, so not affected by that, luckily. :-)
I would like to be able to see what masters are applied to pages somehow. Also, how can we remove ONE of the applied masters but not all of them?
Умница. Но повтори на Русском.
Спасибо! К сожалению, я не говорю по-русски.
@@AffinityRevolution Всеравно умница
@@AffinityRevolution Still a good girl
Great tutorial, but you neglected to show how to create a master page. You just went straight into how to use them.
There's a button to make a new Master Page in the "Master Page" section of the Pages Panel. It's a little to the left of the Trash Can button. I hope that helps. 🙂
So this is app is knock out or a poor man's version of Adobe In design.
Yes, Affinity Publisher is comparable to Adobe InDesign.
@@AffinityRevolution 😂😂😂😂😂😂Its like comparing BMW Vs KIA? good tutorial, but the App isn't as god as In Design.
So helpful and clearly explained. Thanks a ton!
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video. 😊
Super helpful, thank you!
