- #186 of "365 Days of Plants" is Astrophytum myriostigma var. tricostatum nudum-a variation (or form) of Astrophytum myriostigma that only has three fat lobes, as opposed to more. I actually filmed two of these videos-one with my other Astrophytum which has more lobes, but decided to go with this one because I liked the structure, how it was planted, and its substrate, all of which I kept in the original planter I picked up at Tula House.
In this video I'll cover where this is native to, how it grows, where it grows, and best conditions for lighting, watering, fertilizing and more.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

You'll have to do an update video on this soon as it looks like you've got a bloom inbound :) this looks to me like myriostigma nudum as the regular variety has white scales on it. Your plant must be close to 18-20 years old looking at all the stigma on it
no theres no way that plant is 18 years. else it would had bunch of callousing on it. probs closer to 4 - 7 years. anywhere between there
just found one at my local English Gardens! it’s my new baby, can’t wait to watch it grow over the years🤍
I have often wanted to get one of these, they just look so cool. I love how they potted it up in that neat looking pot, it really fits the personality of the plant. Thanks again Summer this is a neat plant.
These Cacti love calcium to strengthen the stem walls. Add some crushed clean eggshell to the mix. As Summer recommends, water in hot weather and let dry out between watering. No water in winter. The cactus you have is a beauty. I am going to try grow a mixed variety of these from seed.
Thank you for your educational videos...I originally had my astrophytum potted in The Next Gardner’s cactus and succulent soil mix, with pumice rock added for extra drainage and aeration. However after doing some more research and seeing what others use and suggested, I switch it to Bonsai Jacks Gritty mix #111. Just for extra precaution due to these beauty’s being susceptible to rot
That's such a beautiful specimen, and I love the rough texture pot design ~ cacti look good in a rustic looking container (and with a grit type top dressing). I've had its close cousin: A. ornatum for 10 yrs now, and it has developed a columnar habit. Mine definitely needs repotting, so I'm going to follow your advice and use a much coarser potting medium for extra drainage.
Wow beautiful Astro and I like you videos 👍👍
Love this plant the beautiful cacti.
Lovely plant I'll have to add it to my long wish list.
I’m an astrophytum freak! Loves me some!!! I’m always on the lookout. Great choice!!!! I like the 3 points.

Love this plant!
ILOVEIT and also that pot
That plant looks absolutely WILD my goodness, haven’t seen something that crazy since the noodly rhipsalis
would love to see how big these guys get after a year or more in full sun, love the plant pot. Thanks for the video Summer.
They're very slow growing so after a year it wouldn't be much bigger. This plant is probably 20 years old
@@alcurtis93 thanks good to know.
Hey just wondering do you still have this place?
Looks like it's decorated with pearls.hope to find one.
👍😍
i'm growing these from seed and graft. you could have a graft that would have grown that big in half the time and degraft it. also, i wouldn't fertilize this thing once a month. you can get some odd growth by doing that.
Hi I am growing some from the seeds but I'm just planted them a few days ago so I don't know how long it will take for them to germinate I got my seeds from a grower in a australia that grows many varieties of cactus 🌵 and I have around 30 varieties that I trying to grow lots of different types some have grown already they came up quite quickly and but other than that are a bit of a slower.
I grew astrophytum from seeds. You're probably looking at a week to germinate if I remember rightly
So how would one tell if this cactus was in need of water? Does it give any signs? Asking for a friend...
You'll see it look less 'plump' but a good rule is just when the soil is bone dry it's safe to water
Thanks!
@@waterkress4770 astrophytum are very prone to rot from overwatering so get it into a very gritty mix
Love it.. I have a cactus with fuzzy polka dots and can't find the name. Got it from the Home Depot and love love it. Growing it outside east facing, in peat perlite, charcoal, tiny crushed lava rock and it's growing fast. Happy growing.
If you upload a photo to somewhere you can share me a link to myself or Summer could help you id it I'm sure? Fuzzy polka dots sounds a bit like an opuntia microdasys but I could be wrong
@@alcurtis93 Will do and thanks...
Echinopsis Domino
Have you seen the variegated ones? They look sick. Not “cool” but literally sick lol
Let me know some good nurseries in Brooklyn? Thanks.
1:41 doesn't make any sense
Looks like the chubby cheeks of a lil baby just wanna pinch it its so cute! But no offence i prefer plants to babies 😛 xo
It looks like one of the plants that were filmed in Thailand at the market. I do know you couldn't bring anything home from there. Either way, it's gorgeous.
