  • The Steely Dan Aja UHQR is making big waves in the audiophile vinyl community!
    In this video, I have a listen to five different pressings of this audiophile classic.
    The Steely Dan Aja UHQR is an all analog mastering done from a non EQ tape copy by the original mastering engineer Bernie Grundman. It is pressed at Chad Kassem's Quality Record Pressing on 200 gm Clarity Vinyl, and housed in a beautiful high gloss Stoughton gatefold jacket. All UHQR releases come in the signature dowel spine slipcase with gold embellishments and inset artwork. This edition is numbered and limited to 30,000 copies.
    I have had Oswaldo Martinez of Let There Be Sound provide hi resolution audio files for two songs from each version under review. These are best downloaded and heard over your own system or with headphones. There is allso a link to a video of Black Cow playing through seamlessly from one version to the next. I hope you enjoy this shootout. I know I loved revisiting this audiophile masterpiece, with its excellent songs, musicianship and production.
    Thank you to Oswaldo for hosting the first part of the shootout and for providing the OG AB and Canadian pressings. Youll find his system listed below.

    Scott honestly, I sat down with one of my friends today and you will see this on a video that I shot while we were listening to the UHQR! I’ve never been hoodwinked into believing all this radically expensive new equipment, can eclipse a system like mine that is a very high end Vintage system! Make no mistake. I am a musician and play multiple instruments so I am very critical of my environment and my playback equipment! So when I tell you, the AB 1006 is the reference standard it is! However, when I started listening to the UHQR, there is nothing on earth like this! I am not a completionists by any measure and this is the very first UHQR I have ever bought! But because of that and that I have skin in the game I made sure to bring someone in to keep me honest, which is a lifelong friend who we worked in a record store together 45+ years ago! His reaction to this record is exactly what mine was… Mind blowing! I’ve never been a big giant fan of Chad Kassem and his FOMO push, but believe me, there’s nothing on earth that compares to this pressing!

      Wow! Matt, I know you are historically not big on these big buck pressings but hearing this from you is saying a lot! I'm so glad your first one was Aja and you loved what you heard. I'll be sure to check out that video!
      Even though my system (and my speakers in oarticular) are modest in comparison to Ozzys system, I was very happy to hear I got excellent results from the UHQR. I think anyone could appreciate the improvement it offered with any thoughtfully put together system. Glad to hear from you and thanks so much for your comments!

      Hi Tony,
      Thanks so much for your comment! My approach in this one was the most fascinating thing to me. I learned so much and really felt that I had covered all the bases to come to an informed conclusion. I think it just goes to show excellent software is so important, yet if you are not getting everything you expected, a little tweaking and reset is in order. In this case it was back to basics, simplifying, and digging a little deeper. If there's anything to take away from this one, aside from the excellence of the UHQR, it's to experiment with your set up, and that you don't need to throw more money at the issue. Great results can be attained on modest systems with thoughtful set up and experimentation.

    What a fantastic review! I loved hearing about all the tests you did, how your system’s sound changed when you took out the sub, all of it!
    Yes, you are so right to emphasize that results of comparisons or even how much someone will like a given pressing is system dependent, room dependent, and listener dependent.
    I have an OG that sounds pretty great, and wasn’t leaning toward buying the UHQR, but your absolutely superb video essay has me strongly considering parting with another $150.

    Hi Scott, I've had my Debut 2 6.2s for a few months & I've been rediscovering my CDs. I'm finding some CDs now have harshness, that's been talked about for eons & others now sound perfect that were previously dull. Two perfect cases, Linda Ronstadt Simple Dreams (the preferred Barry Diament transfer) & A Decade Of Steely Dan (the preferred Roger Nichols & Bob Ludwig transfer) now shine. For CDs with harshness, as long as the transfer is not compressed, a little tone control treble cut works wonders. Aja (an early unknown transfer) & Hotel California (a WCI transfer, not the preferred Barry Diament) are good examples of treble cut goodness. Enjoy!

    I'm pretty sure that I have said this before but I think this may be your best review ever. I love the fact that you were able to put to words all the steps you took to come to your own conclusion on this record and your system. It really hit home how ones own system can effect the audiophile experience. In addition, hopefully your review will remind me and other audiophiles a clearer picture of what we should be looking for (or considering) when buying new equipment. Historically, I have seen friends of mine chase down (or maybe 'prefer' may be more accurate?) really analytical revealing systems thinking that that is what makes a great system. Other audiophile friends I have seen, use metrics, reading graphs and charts to determine (and maybe convince themselves) why that is the best way to achieve the ultimate system. Personally, I have learned in my travels that I tend to like tube ("coloured") warm systems. I tend to like all types of music, including non-audiophile records. Anyways, enough of my ranting... thanks again for taking the time to do these video Scott

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thank you Jason. This was a great experience for me going through this process. Imagine learning through trial and error, a component you already own could sound better than you imagined - by changing wire, eliminating sub and wires, and repositioning the speakers. This is what's exciting about our hobby is the tweaking to get everything just a little bit better. It's not about spending crazy amounts on the next great component. Sensible choices put together with care and maximized by placement, and attention to the room all play big into the sound and generally cost very little. I never imagined these unassuming Elacs, highly reviewed as the were, could provide just as satisfying experience as something much more costly. I now see why the reviews at the time were so ecstatic. This kind of sound for the cost is really something. Andrew Jones is an amazing designer!

    • @mcgjohn22
      @mcgjohn22 Před 7 měsíci +2

      @jasonhoffer9017, would agree with your comments on super, super analytical systems. That used to be me in a nutshell. While my system at that point in time was very revealing I found my listening time grew smaller and smaller each time I sat down. It was not very fun to listen to. Now I lean more towards a musical sounding system, completely all tube, and tubes do not have to be that syrupy warm sound. Much of the more modern tube gear is very balanced. I know many will argue one way or the other but a simple test a person can do is measure how long your sound system holds you in the listening seat before you get bored and get up and leave.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I've discovered this too. I have been striving to have sound that is on the warm side of neutral. Going with tubes really helped this. I want the experience of playing record after record and never being disinterested. When things were tipped the other way , I wasn't enjoying music on that level. I still am not 100% there but I'm developing an awareness of things I don't want, and can easily say no something that doesn't rock my boat, even if reviews are positive for it.

    Interesting comparisons. I downloaded the files and did a modest comparison with Black Cow. Benchmark DAC and Sennheiser HD600 headphones.
    1. Cisco has an oddly boxy and muffled quality, particularly in snare drum and Fagen's vocals
    2. MFSL is by far the brightest and tizziest of the lot. The gated (?) reverbs sound quite pronounced compared to all the others. Because of the treble emphasis there is a lot of characteristic vinyl distortion.
    3. OG version has the loudest background rumble
    4. Of all the vinyl versions the UHQR sounds most neutral and balanced despite the typical vinyl bloom in the midbass an low mids. Quite enjoyable.
    5. And finally the rather obvious winner of this test is my own cd copy (ripped to flac) from the Citizen Steely Dan Box set. The sound is airy, balanced, layered and stable from start to finish.

    Scott:
    As always great content!! That was an interesting comparison and I’ll admit it was a bit surprising too. I only have the UHQR today. Back in the day, I had the MoFi version but I sold it to a college buddy after owning it for about 2 weeks. I have a half dozen MoFi’s purchased in the 70’s and early 80’s. 4 of them had the smiley face EQ, which I hated even back then. You see I had an above average system for a college student and I hated the smiley face EQ. Several of my friends had the OG version of the LPs rereleased by MoFi. They all were floored hearing the MoFI’s on my system. Between the quiet vinyl and the deep (boomy) bass and the higher, highs that they ever heard o records before, they loved the MoFi version. To me the MoFi’s were like a carnival funhouse mirror. The OGs sounded more pleasing and natural to my ears.
    Listening to your AIFF files on my system, in my room, level matched with a Radio Shack SPL meter from the 70’s: I had similar results to you. The MoFi and the Canadian yellow pressing I quickly gave up on. Nothing to be seen here. I disliked the MoFi as much as I remembered. The OG didn’t offend me, but was at least a level below the Cisco and UHQR. I would enjoy the OG as a record, but I would never trot it out as a demo record to show off my system. Overall I did like the UHQR the best, but not always to my surprise. I thought the UHQR was a bit more detailed and had higher highs and lower lows. What the Cisco had going for it was at times it had slightly greater warmth. In fact until I level matched things I would have awarded the Cisco first place. I was definitely cut hotter. I will also say none of the streamed AIFF files even came close to sound of the UHQR played on my turntable.
    As for my own results, I have similar “problems” to the ones you faced with new equipment to factor in. I have made significant upgrades to the power supply for my system only 2 weeks ago. I had a 20A dedicated circuit installed for just my gear, wired with heavy 10 GA wire. To that I added some Audiophile power cords, a Power Conditioner and Audiophile outlet. Bottom line: Too many changes to know how much of the great sound was due to the record & how much was the electrical system related changes.
    What I heard on my UHQR on my system: A great amount of detail with lots of space around the instruments. The musicians were in the room and the instruments were usually quite realistic sounding. There was quite a bit of impact heard on the drums and the keyboards, not to mention the sax. The sound stage for some of the backing vocals was wide and at times extended beyond the walls of my listening room. I heard fine details I have never heard on this LP before. In some cases what I thought was a sound made by one instrument was actually a blend of several instruments playing in unison. Who knew? The one negative I heard was the lead in groove had some groove rumble which disappeared just a few seconds before the music started. The runout groove was silent. The pressing was otherwise dead quiet, dead flat and dead centered. The supplied materials were all in perfect shape.
    I have always tried to get the best sounding pressing I can relatively easily get of an LP. I enjoy the listening experience and endless crate digging looking for the best of the best of the best was never in my playbook. This was even true in High School and College. It is even more true particularly now that I am retired and with COVID to worry about. I used to look for used records at some selected stores and I had some LPs I be on the lookout for and will pickup if I happen to see them. So for me the UHQR certainly qualifies as the best copy I can easily get of Aja and I don't mind paying the price. Sadly, I thought this was going to be true of Pretzel Logic, which I found totally underwhelming. Based on that, I originally planned on waiting for the reviews to come in before I took the plunge on Aja. I heard a livestream with Michael Fremer where he said this pressing was the best pressing he has ever heard of Aja. Where he caught hell earlier this year for panning Pretzel Logic, Fremer had credibility with me. I found his review of the Pretzel Logic UHQR very credible because it matched my own experience. When I heard his comment bout Aja during a podcast, I immediately went online and ordered the UHQR.
    This is indeed one of the two or three best sounding ROCK albums I own. I have some Jazz, Classical & Big Band titles the sound even better on my system.

    Great review. Thank you! I have a pristine Cisco test pressing. I had pre-ordered the UHQR, but decided to cancel that order a couple of months ago. I figured, how much better can the UHQR be? Do I really need to spend $150+? Well, as soon as the reviews started to come out, I rethought things and, honestly, succumbed to FOMO. Well, I am glad I did succumb.
    I just got the UHQR today, having listened to side A of my Cisco last night. I did not even wait for my system to warm up before spinning the UHQR today. Even though it had been more than twelve hours since hearing the Cisco, the difference in the openness and placement of the instruments and vocals between the two was immediately apparent. After listening to the entire UHQR, I spun side B of the Cisco. In comparison, the UHQR seems more present and 3D, whereas the Cisco seems to shrink somewhat back into the speakers. That said, the Cisco is still superb, and I quickly readjusted my hearing to settle into enjoyment of the Cisco. I can't remember what you said in your review. Maybe that the Cisco is more clinical? I get that. And I still love the Cisco...won't be selling it.
    Having been able to compare the two, would I buy the UHQR again? Absolutely yes. To my ear, it's superior to the Cisco and way superior to my other pressings. However, if it was not one of my favorite records and one so full of memories, I could easily be content with only the Cisco. But, obviously, I love this record; and for one who does, I think this is a must purchase.
    For those who care, I received copy 4,700 of the UHQR. It was played on a Rega Planar 3 with an Apheta II MC cart and Groovetracer reference subplatter and Delrin platter with Rega external PSU. Phono pre is a HEED Quasar III. The rest is Schiit Vidar monoblocks, Schiit Freya (solid state) and JBL Studio 580 speakers.

      Thank you for your comments! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Actually I did not use the word clinical in the review. To me the Cisco has a sweeter tonal balance but is recessed a bit in comparison to the UHQR. I can absolutely enjoy either. It's was on deeper listening that the UHQR really was superior in presence, image placement etc. It's spectacular. The Cisco is a great choice in a brighter system. I think on a well balanced system in a well damped room, either with furnishings or treatments, the UHQRs strengths will make for the most engaging listening experience

    In regards to the original MoFi, like everything in audio (including speakers, electronics, microphones, A/D & D/A converters, etc) they can sound very good on their own. It is when we compare one item against another that we realize it's strengths and deficiencies. I remember in the studio we compared 6 different microphones on a piano. We placed them close together so they all had the same performance. It was shocking to learn a well respected microphone was deficient in the bass. Sometimes ignorance can be bliss.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 7 měsíci +2

      That's sometimes the case even with current day MOFI. Often good sounding without any reference, in isolation. You've got to conduct tests just like your example with the microphones.

    I have always enjoyed the Cisco - the balance, warmth in the lower mid range, lots of detail.
    The UHQR sounds more like the AB1006 but just pouring out more openness, detail, body. It is such an engaging experience. It exceeded my high expectations by a lot. There are some extra low level details the original could only hint at.

    one more comment on US pressings of Aja. As many well know Aja in the US sold tons and tons of copies. Demand was so high that Aja was pressed by many of the US record plants at the time. The AA and AB pressings were mostly pressed by one of the Columbia Record Plants (Terre Haute, IN, Pitman, NJ, Santa Maria, CA). A few were pressed by Monarch Records. None of the Columbia plants were known for their high quality pressings and sonic qualities. There was an AB pressing run by the RCA Indy plant. Have never seen a copy or heard a copy, but for those folks who like to search out pressings, the RCA Indianapolis AB pressing may be a sonic jewel. The RCA Indy plant continued to press records of great sonic quality until they finally closed with the onset of CDs.

    Nice review. Interesting find you had on your system vs. your friend's. Would agree, the Cisco is really good. The UHQR has an ease about it the Cisco version does not have; has more of the high speed half track tape sound. I have the original MOFi, the AB US pressing, and a number of Japan pressings. Would agree with your thoughts on the MOFI. I used to think this was a reference pressing until I got a few of the Japan pressings. Aja was so popular in the US and Japan that several pressing companies in Japan pressed this record. Toshiba, Victor Music and Nippon Phonogram. In the US quite a few pressing plants pressed it with some variation. Would have to say the UHQR 45 is the best sounding copy I have. For those on a budget a person may want to seek out the new digital master 180 gram. I have not heard it so cannot comment on its sonics merits. The other one worth looking for is the 1st press Nippon phonogram pressing. It is considerably cheaper than the MOFI and is sonically quite a bit better. Tons and tons of all the Japan versions were pressed and are not too difficult to find.

    My UHQR arrives today...
    I had decided to go the SACD route because of cost, and those have rolled out painfully slow.
    But Aja had to be the UHQR.
    My system is modest compared to many...
    A nice Thorens turntable, a '76 Marantz receiver, two monster Cerwin Vega and two killer Yamaha speakers.
    For me, this suits me fine.
    I do have an expensive pair of Sennheiser headphones that really help with testing pressings.
    So, that's basically it for me. I'm sure I'll like this issue.
    I do have an AB, and a mofi, and I've never heard the Cisco.

    To me, sub-woofers are for effect and not add bass to the mix. Subs for me are best used while watching movies with sound effects. While out driving around, it's really irritating to me when some car pulls up and all you can hear is the boom-boom-boom, plus you can feel it. It kind of makes me want to go over and do some physical damage. Well, enough of my gripes.
    In my home theater system, for my main front drivers, I have a pair of American Acoustics 4-way speakers. They have 12" woofers and really deliver the bass without shaking the house. That's the job of my 12", 300 watt subwoofer. With it's equalizer, I have it adjusted to the lower frequencies and the volume level set so it isn't obtrusive,except for the sound effects for videos. It is capable of rattling the house.
    With my computers, the speaker systems have active sub-woofers. The desktop speakers deliver excellent highs and mids, but are useless for the bass, hence the subs. I can rattle the house with those, which my wife can attest to. It's hard to get bass out of 4" speakers.
    I'm really not familiar with "Aja" so I don't have an opinion there. I usually go for albums with high Top 40 hit's. I have many Steely Dan singles, mostly mono/stereo promos. Looking, I don't have any from the "Aja" album. "Peg" is good, but I hardly remember it eventhough it hit #11 in the Top 40. "Deacon" & "Josie" only hit #19 & #26, respectively.
    As far as records go, the 45 rpm speed is magical for sound. This same affect even morso created magic when a record was recorded to 15 ips R2R tape and even when the singles were recorded to 7 1/2 ips carts.

    I was wondering if you had by chance read "The Master Handbook of Acoustics"? When setting up my system as with any sound reproduction components, I find that ones understanding of the rooms actual sound dynamics has to be studied so as to add gain to the deficiencies and defeat to the modal resonances. I found the chapter explaining the human ear to brain connection and the fact that evolution has geared our brains to hear frequencies that fall within the human voice range to be easier to pick out (louder). That said, an EQ is a must and Dynamic Range enhancement is a tool that used properly, can decompress most compression that comes standard with all formats. Lastly, speaker efficiency, is by far the greatest game changer of any system and can deliver the full body and nuances of the reproduction after all....... what I never heard from you or the commenters, is which if any sounded like you were in the studio at the mixing board and the sng sounded clean, crisp, subtle, attack, and live. UHQR all the way, using the updated transfer you put up (the wav file). It's like an improved, fuller bandwidth, more dynamic, more lifelike and refined, better version of the original release in comparison with the others here. I don't like the Cisco and sold mine years ago. I do not find it engaging. It does have a few advantages over the original, but it's too putty like and doesn't speak well enough. I also feel the low bass doesn't quite suit the music...possibly how it's eqd around 50hz, basically in how the kick drums sound in this comparison on "Black Cow" (I didn't play both songs). Whatever few advantages the Cisco may have vs the original, the UHQR has, but even better.

The UHQR is more dynamic and the symbols sound more like live symbols (my mom played the drums when I was growing up so I know what live drums sound like). just from first impressions I think UHQR is the way to go and significantly cheaper to boot.

    Not an absolute but that is why I prefer a vintage speaker from around the time period when analog was the standard, probably the reason nm KEF Calindas as well as the 105.1 Reference are so enjoyable and fine with a good digital recording. Also, acoustic suspension ( sealed ) were more common back then as well which invariably offers solid, accurate and controlled low frequencies. Very few speakers made today are designed without ports unfortunately. Not going to suggest there are modern speakers that do not have that sound signature but they do tend to be more analytical.
    Probably why vintage gear tends to be more satisfying when records are the preference, the Luxman L 480 and Sony STD 6800 SD I use offer filters for high and low frequencies, mono / stereo switching and very good phono sections as well, in fact I do like the two phono inputs on the Sony as I use more than one turntable with it.
    Almost endless combinations out there along with one's budget but once you have system components that work well together the music takes precedence. I just might purchase the UHQR Aja in the next month or so, it may possibly be the only example in the series as the cost is a bit high here in Canada and it has to be an exceptional release as well.

    So i have an original (I bought back in ‘77) abc Records rainbow label with the “AB” cart he’d out and AA written in. The full mark is AA (scratch out AB) 1006(RE-3)-A -T and then something that looks like a 7. Further around the vinyl it has “T1”. At almost 50 years old it sounds fantastic on my system (Fluance 85 with acrylic platter and ortofon blue). My understanding is that the scratch out versions are pretty rare and have the same sonic quality as the AB, but would welcome any insights from experts on this channel.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for your comment! Yes the pressing you have is the same mastering as the original AB. The scratch out was done to the plate to signify a price code change, and the catalog number went to AA. These cross out pressings are great. Later ones with AA no cross out or mention of AB are inferior masterings. So you have a great copy, one that my collaborater preferred to the UHQR on his system. I could live with any of them, and I love the Cisco as well. No need to spring for a UhQR if you love the sound of the original. Many do.

    I have a high-quality system that is very revealing (300B tube SET + Horns) and I find UHQR pressings too analytical and often too bright for my taste. In my opinion, they tried to go in the direction of the hyper-analytical sound of MOFI One-Steps. The effect is you get great detail, soundstage, etc but imho you are missing the natural musicality and certain cohesiveness of the sound you get from a good AAA vinyl. I don't like this evolution so decided to cut down on UHQR. Not to mention the ridiculous pricing I get in EU.

      I can see what you are saying and if you've been watching me, you probably know I dislike hyper detailed sound. I've given up on MOFI One Steps after half a dozen disappointments. I think this UHQR stays within the bounds, but just pushes the envelope enough to please everyone. It could come across to forward with a horn speaker. It's one I suggest trying before buying if you can. It's just too much money for what you might find an unplayable record.

      @@ThePressingMatters Nothing wrong with the ModWright supplied 6922's (JJ gold pins right?). I think I ran vintage Amprex 7308 PQ's in mine (1960's era Amprexes). I still have the tubes, but no longer have the Modwright. I sold it to buy a VAC Renaissance Phono amp from a friend.
      The VAC uses a half dozen 12ax7's and unlike the PH9.0, is MM or MC for each of its 3 inputs, has balanced phono in and capacitive loading options. I run 2 tables (including one with a balanced DIN to XLR cable) with a range of cartridges, so the VAC works better in my setup.
      One of my favorite overall 6922-type tubes (which are reasonably priced) are Reflector 6H23p-EB's. Those are Soviet mil-spec tubes. Both Tube Depot and Upscale Audio have stock in the $60-70/ea range.
      If you have a money burning a hole in your pocket, Kevin Deal (Upscale) has a few cases of NOS 6922 Telefunkens. The real deal. I saw them when I was there 2 weekends ago.

    Why most people mess up a damn perfect album by releasing in stupid hires formats it just spoils the vibe of the albums. Plus the fact that you only have 20hz to 20Khz that we can hear and that diminishes as we get older. So this comparison is just a waste of time.
