    Thank you for this comparison!🙂 For those interested - what I hear - thorugh my computer (with koss portapro headphones): I actually think the, Ladder Schuman, is more blurry, less defined and less detailed in the bass, but it has more attack in the upper frequenzies compared to Gustard R26. To my ears, the R26 compared with Schumann, has more punch in the midbass, but is softer on top, and does not have that same attack. The Pontus II, for me, is the best one here. It has the attack that the R26 lacks, and while it does not have the same "hump" in the bass as the R26 has, it has for me both a satisfying bass, and the more textured and detailed bass. I am just surprised that I am able to hear differences through youtube with my laptop and headphones. I might have a different opinion if I had the chance to listen to these live. For now, for my personal preference, I would put Denafrips in first place, and then for me, Gustard in second, and then Ladder Schumann in third. But that is me🙂 Thank you again for a fantastic review and comparison!🙂

    Hi Tharbamar,
    Thank you for the great review!
    I have had my HAP-Z1ES for 3+ years, and like you, I really think it sounds great! That being said, I've always wondered if adding a high quality external USB DAC would be an appreciable sonic upgrade. The three dacs you tested all are highly regarded, and all cost as much or more than what I paid for my HAP-Z1ES a few years ago.
    Could you give me your opinion on how the sound quality of the HAP-Z1ES, on its own (no external dac), compares with the three dacs tested? Notably, are there significant differences in sound stage, warmness, details or richness/texture of the sound?
    Thank a lot in advance.
    All the best,
    David

    This comparison comes out earlier than other reviewers so I believe it’s going to be a hit. Another great video! These 3 R2R DACs have generated lots of interests. Initially, I shortlisted Ares II, Pontus II, Ladder Schumann, Musician Pegasus and Gustard R26. After reading horror stories of the high faulty rates of Musician Pegasus, their customer service going MIA when customers emailed them and several units sent back to factory went mysteriously missing, I struck it off my list. I don’t know much about the Ladder Brand so it’s an uncertainty for me.
    I went with Gustard R26. I had the R26 for 2 weeks now and it keeps getting better and better. It makes everyone of my headphones sound better. The only thing I wish they do it differently is to use the larger side of the display for the menu, have to reach for my reading glasses when I access the menu LOL. This is my end game DAC. If I ever buy another DAC, its probably just for variety because I doubt my old ears can hear better.
    I may be getting a pair of speakers in the near future so the streaming functions which several R26 owners shared that streaming it produces better sound, is kind of ‘near-future proofing” for me. Would appreciate anyone who streams with the R26 to share your experiences please?

      I bought speakers at the end of last year. I have a Moon cd-1 with Burr Brown and upsampling in. What I lack is the streaming from out, and I want to bring on board the TV if possible for film streaming, We also have a huge NAS library. The speakers I purchased are the KLH model 5.

    • @BillyKueekSG
      @BillyKueekSG Před rokem +1

      @@clarice1001nights, thank you for sharing. I like the Burr Brown sounds and iFi”s implementation of it so much so that I bought the iFi Zen DAC V2, the Gryphon (which I use as a desktop DAC mostly) and the iFi Pro iCAN amp. Also, in June this year my old Sony 40” TV “retired” but I still have the Blu-ray player with old wired surround speakers. Kept the player because it can play SACD although it’s only 1080 for Blu-ray. I bought a 75” Hisense TV and the LG S95QR 9.1.5 sound bar system so I connected the Sony player for CDs. I like the classic looks of your speakers. I intend to get a pair of active speakers (size either bookshelf-type or slightly bigger but no space for floor standing) to put in my study room where my DACs, amps, headphones and my work desk are. What do you like about the KLH Model 5? The original version was introduced in the year I was born 😂. I am just reading up about the KEFs.

    • @clarice1001nights
      @clarice1001nights Před rokem +2

      The Moon CD-1 plays very well, I am not sure if the lack of detail & sound stage would be bettered by an R26. Our LG soundbar in 5.1 is adequate for streaming films.
      I have a dilemma. A NAS with music, and new streaming services can not be processed by the DAC in the CD-1. I could build a streamer based on a Rasberry P4 that would take care of services. I am not entirely clear if it will see the info on the NAS. If we can reach files on our network and services using either a better streamer like the one you use or the R26 would make it easier to make the decision.
      What can you tell me about these things?

    With the Ifi hip dac 2 and Iem, the Ladder Schumann sounded a little brighter and more precise to me, and the impact was very good.
    I liked it very much and best of the 3 R2R dacs.
    The R26 sounded darker, less precise and less involving compared to the Schumann, but the Schumann had the edge for me.
    With the Pontus it was similar to the R26, somewhat better, also in the bass texture.

It is the input with the most life like sound performance and it is not subtle. I know that you use a Sony media player with USB out but you could try using the LAN input with a UPNP app like Mconnect ( I guess you are not a Roon user).

      After all the rave reviews over the last two years it finally seems that many are saying exactly what you have about the Ares II: That it is soft on bass and not very defined. Some have even said that good sigma-delta DACs sound better. Thanks for confirming that suspicion. • @rosswarren436
      @rosswarren436 Před rokem +4

      @@vicluu8026 jitter is way overblown as an audio issue. You do know that all the incoming bits to a DAC are put into a buffer and reclocked. Jitter would have to be an inordinate amount to cause buffer underflow and that, in practice never happens with good designs. So nearly ANY streamer worth a $100 bucks or so should do the job quite nicely, while the DAC does its thing to alleviate any "jitter".
      The only thing a better streamer can offer is less inherent electrical noise, so yes, power supplies and isolation are where a small difference can be made if using wired USB, Toslink coaxial, or I2S connections.
      Besides R2R or sigma-delta architectures have nothing much to do with jitter. If it hasn't been mitigated BEFORE it gets to the DAC chip or ladder network it won't be when output analog.
      What they (my electrical engineering friends) are saying is that there is no "magic" in an R2R architecture. It is merely a different, older way, of doing things. As Tharbamar states, going forward, most DACs will likely be sigma-delta ones, hopefully with good buffers and reclocking chips in the femtosecond range of accuracy. Let's hope all this stuff gets better and cheaper as time moves on.

      @@mikeg2491 I just went to a friend's house to test Gustard R26, I used Audeze MM500 headphones. I have tested R26 with slow med and fast filters. The three filters only feel slightly different. Gustard's bass sound is good and there is no impression of losing bass, maybe if you are too careful you will find a slight decrease in bass boom. At that time, I was comparing the sound of the sigma delta dac. My impression is that the sound of the Gustard R26 is very similar to the sound of Delta Sigma in the treble and resolution and detail, there is no significant softness in the treble sound. Where the R2R dac claims to provide a much softer treble sound, but I didn't find it in the Gustard R26. I want a r2r dac with a lot of softened treble sound, can you help me choose the r2r dac?

    • @Wharariki
      @Wharariki Před rokem +5

      I have the E50 and the R26. I also had the SMSL VMV D2 for a couple of weeks before the R26 arrived but have since returned it. The SMSL was in a different class, a big jump over the E50. Greater dynamics, bass weight, soundstaging. A smoother, sweeter treble. Everything just sounded more full bodied and natural, vocals especially. E50 was comparatively light and a little thin, with an edge to the sound that was fatiguing through my revealing speakers. Using the Gustard U18 DDC with the E50 helped quite a bit, but then it also further improved the resolution and dynamics of the SMSL. The R26 was clearly audibly superior to the SMSL from first listen and has further improved in the month I’ve had it. The R26 has a more dynamic sound, with great energy and tempo (more foot tapping than the SMSL), with more air and sparkle in the treble and overall resolution. I realised the smooth top end of the SMSL though pleasant was at the cost of some of the detail and vitality. And then there’s the R26’s great timbre, vocals and instruments just sound so much more believable, almost like they’re in your room. TL;DR - the R26 is a superb DAC that is a level above the very good SMSL D2 and in a completely different league to the E50. You get what you pay for and then some with the R26.

      @Wharariki Před rokem +3

      @@justonemoregshock Hah, no worries I wondered if you'd follow up with that question. No not blind. No need nor interest in doing so. The differences were not subtle. Some other things I've changed have made marginal differences, but not these DAC changes, in my system. With the E50 and my then new Focal speakers the sound was bright, thin and harsh. A poor match probably but I had a month of serious buyers remorse with the speakers which weren't cheap. It was a relief when the SMSL arrived and even more so with the R26. Not trying to convince you, just passing on my experience, suggest you have a listen for yourself. There's no substitute for that.
      Let me add btw that I also got and still use the Topping PA5 which is amazing. Blew away more expensive amps and a Denon receiver many times the price.

In my experience every single thing I put under the devices produce a profound shift in terms of sound quality and yet you are using 3 different footers for each device and room acoustics is non existent. You are describing what you hear under those circumstances and people should be aware of them.

    Tharbamar, not all of the DACs on this planet are compared based on their OS/NOS capabilities....Such a binary comparison doesn't really help you or anyone else.
    As a matter of fact, if you watch Wave Theory's DAC reviews (you should) you'd know by now that NOS (might) come in handy with extremly high sampling rates ONLY.
    It's like you're comparing current top-notch mirrorless cameras based on the megapixels of their sensors ONLY...C'mon man, you should know better than that....
