HMHS Britannic - Sleeping Sun

- At 8:12AM on November 21, 1916, the HMHS Britannic shook with an explosion. With the damage she sustained and a few malfunctions, she reached her flooding limit (six watertight compartments); unfortunately, nurses had opened the portholes to ventilate rooms (against orders) and, as the bow sank further into the water and reached these portholes, the ship was overwhelmed. Captain Bartlett, attempting to save his ship, tried to beach the ship on the island of Kea, unsuccessfully. Within 55 minutes, at 9:07AM, the HMHS Britannic descended into the Kea Channel, following her sister in being a time capsule.
Thankfully, of the roughly 1100 people aboard her at the time, only thirty were killed. These fatalities were due to the propellors, as two lifeboats, launched without authorization and without Bartlett's knowledge, drifted into them as Captain Bartlett attempted to beach the ship.

This guy started the topic of Sleeping Sun in Sinking Ships videos. Awesome.
TRUE. This video and some others started it all.
Still can't believe this is from 2007. A remnant of old CZcams.
I remember watching this so many years ago, my god time flies
battleshipfleet same with me

Hell yeah back in 3rd and 4th grade I was so intrigued with shipwrecks I still am to this day

Same here friendo, 10 years ago I used to make and watch videos about early 20th century ocean liners. Titanic was always my favourite.
This video brings back so many memories. I had a little obsession with ships back in elementary school after we read this book about Titanic. I annoyed the shit out of my classmates but still, it was so interesting to find out that 2 of the 3 “unsinkable” sister ships sank
Tiehack , I feel you I’m 15 & I remember back then I had this weird obsession for ships that had sunken, I just thought the stories were so interesting & fearful.
Holy shit i also had that obsession
I’m glad I’m not alone lmao
Same, all the movies about them just enhanced it!
Same..
The sequence of the brave Britannic rolling over is absolutely chilling.
and because of this video , every Britannic video has the Sleeping Sun song , will done making a CZcams tradition
This was THE video that kicked off my obsession with ships like Titanic, Britannic, Lusitania, etc. I was 7 years old in 2010, and began building Lego Titanics. Videos like this, lego titanic stopmotions, watching the movie Titanic on repeat, building lego titanics and playing with my toy Titanic model were all big chunks of my childhood. Sleeping Sun is so much nostolgia.
So...your the guy that started the trend of paring Sleeping sun with tragedies..
That's the attitude I like, high five bud!
Like 99% of videos have this song!
Like if these White Star Line ships will never be forgotten!
Were lucky we still have the Nomadic the last survivor of White Star Line.
th33ninja I work there! Love seeing people mention it and spreading the word! :D
th33ninja my favorite is ss nomadic and ss United States

Nearly 6 years ago now....
Of my life, it has become a part.
To the maker of this video I applaud and bow,
For this video has yet again pierced my heart.
I love this video, and thank you tcr2006 for uploading it so long ago.
I applaud you too, for this amazing comment ;)
She was such a proud looking ship. She wore her green stripe with pride. This is a lovely video. In loving memory of the magnificent H.M.H.S. Britannic and to those lost in her sinking.
natinal anthem for sinking ship
National not natinal
Yeh
at least most of them survived
4 sank (Britannic titanic Aquatania and Lusitania ) 2 scrapped (Olympic and Mauritania )
Laura Heads I believe he meant the passengers and crew, as only 30 people died. And Britannic, Titanic and Olympic were the only White Star Line ships, The Lusitania, Mauritania and the Aquatania were Cunard. The Lusitania, and the Mauritania are Cunard ships for sure but the Aquantania I'm not sure of.
Bradley Woltz Aquitania, constructed in 1914, belonged to Cunard and her sisters were Lusitania and Mauretania.
Laura Heads i believe aquitania wasnt sunk, it survived the wars and was the last ocean liner. Its fate was being scrapped
Only 30 died
IT MAKES ME CRY SO BAD
Honor and Glory parodied this and it made me so happy.
I remember when I first ever watched this. I was in the 5th grade. So many memories
R.I.P. Britannic......
+Zane666 DevilChild you will forever be missed.......
100 years gone since Britannic sunk. 1916-2016.
oh, well to be more specific, the water tight bulkheads only went so high up the ship structure, many portholes were located above where the watertight bulkheads ended, so water rushed into the parts of the ship that werent water tight, so water was able to spread much quicker on the upper decks, thus leading to a much quicker demise, unlike titanic, where the water had to flood over the bulkheads in order to flood the rest of the ship
100 years 1916 to 2016
:/
This is the original 'Song over Tragedy' format video, and by far it's the only good one I've seen. It's not made with windows movie maker, the visuals give something of a timeline, and on occasion match up with the lyrics.
Good on you!
Even tho Britannic was a hospital ship, It looked really intimidating. So did Titanic and Olympic.
Lusitania Mauretania and Aquitania 😭😭

the video that started it all for these sleeping sun videos.
The Olymic,Titanic and Britannic only needed 3 funnels for the boilers but the 4'th was added to make the ships look more visually appealing. The 4'th funnel was used for ventilation of the rear of the ships. It had a function.
1:24 is not Britannic, it is *Olympic.*
no is britannic in black
No the Britannic 1
Rip britannic sister of titanic
This video got me into this ship. I will always love this ship and video. This is a good song also. NightWish is the best!
We're in the best era so far because we can appreciate how great the previous eras were! youtube wasn't around in 1912 remember :)
briannic is 99 almost 100 titanic 104 Lusitania 101
stop at 1:25 and look at the funnel, the is black so which means it's titanic not Britannic because Titanic's funnels where black and yellow and Britannic was all yellow
Alright
look at the poop decks
Kevin 1485 though yes it is titanic the colour is not a valid point considering the ship was repainted
Ughhhh, the funnels were not completely yellow, did you see black? Yes you saw black in the color version so shut cha' mouth
@@kathyquinn605 that was made by the smoke/steam
Thank you again.
Honestly this is the only good Britannic Sleeping Sun video.
30 died in britannic because the britannic has many boats than titanic and lusitania
No they been chop up
The Lusitania had enough lifeboats just not the time to launch then.
+The Titanic 18 m :(
I know why it had more lifeboats maybe they know what happened to Titanic with the lifeboats so I think that's why they put more
The boats killed 28 death by big spinning propeller
all the white star line ships had a violent death most worst death ship rms titanic
+venturiantale fan mot the nomidic i was on it last week, it was a wsl ship that carried passengers to larger ships like titanic
Violet no deat
Thank you for the comment. I've been dealing with a few things as of late and this comment has made my day.
i feel sorry for those 30 people who got sucked into the still moving propellers and that 1 guy who died because of the explosion. may they rest in peace :(
WAIT did olimpic sink
***** Olympic did *not* sink.
Nope. She was scraped.
Yes it did. The titanic was scrapped. They changed the names
Lewis Marshall The Olympic did not sink it lasted till 1934 then it was scrapped into metal.
No it didn't, Titanic and Olympic had never switched.
my aunty was on the brittanic (gigantic lie)
She was traveling of the island of Kea when she struck a sea mine on her starboard side between her second and third holds and sank in just under an hour. Roughly thirty some odd people died on this ship. The good news is that she was not transporting patients at the time and if she had, the casualty rate is believed to have been much worse.
Thank you.
Realy nice work mate
yes i read somewhere that the damage only caused 1 squaremeter of open wound, but unfortunate spread on 5 compartments
Once again, thank you for your comment. It's good to see that, though film companies don't seem to like the movies, the 'ordinary' people do.
Thanks!!
Tarja's fantastic voice just fits perfectly! The mood of this song too!
between 2:05 and 2:25 really help get the idea of seeing such a massive ship sink so fast. She was built with updates learnt from the lessons from titanic yet went down in nearly a third of the time of her sister. still shes one of the few (if any) ship wreaks where all the funnels where found and still intact.
finally, original sleeping sun sinking edition
A well put together slideshow of sorts, the music goes well with it too as well, I think.
puts a tear to my eye
In this class of liners there were the RMS Olympic (1911), RMS Titanic (1912), RMS Gigantic renamed Britannic (1914-15). As we all know the Titanic was lost on her maiden voyage. The Britannic did not see service with the White Star Line because WWI broke out. She was requested by the British Navy to be a trooper then as a hospital ship with her competition RMS Aquitania (Cunard-1914). On 21 November 1916 sailing through the Kea Channel off Greece she struck either a German or a Turkish
Such a beautiful song.
i will never forget you brittanic and your epic theme song😥
@Abricialio I'm not talking about the Aquitania.
It is the german liner SS Vaterland that was bigger
@Sabineous a mine that can top a gash in 4-5 compartments?
This made me cry
The Britannic was built with all the "improvements" that her sister's (Titanic, Olympic) didn't have like higher bulkheads, etc. Britannic sank so fast because she was in a warm climate with most of the port holes wide open so all it took was a slight list and down she went. Sad. Olympic "died in bed" as she was in service until the mid 1930s before being scrapped. Her interior wood work is in several buildings today in England.
Whiter Star liners, Olympic (1911), Titanic (1912) and Brittainic (1915) were all identicle in length, the Brittanic was slightly wider and heavier as a result of modifications made during construction following the Titanic disaster. The Lusitania and Mauritania (1907) were rival Cunard liners later joined by the Aquatania (1914). Cunard & White Star merged in the 1920's and the last Cunarder of old the Queen Elizabeth 2 was retired from service on 14/11/08.
such a shame how much work was put into these 3 sisters because they were such great ships and they all faced pretty bad endings
Great video and good choice of music.
Tcr2006 i show this video to my class at my school and they really love it they wanted me to say thanks for making this video and i think it should be on T.V.
Wow tcr2006 you have a gift this is really well done.
actually what alot of people dont know and refuse to beleive is the fact that it's the olympic that hit an iceberg and sunk, just before the ships were finished they switched the names. so it's the olympic that lies at the bottom of the ocean, white star line just switched the 2 ships for some reason.
The Britannic was slated to be constructed identical to the Titanic, but after the titanic disaster, revisions were made, such as a duble hull along the engine rooms and boiler rooms and large 'crane-like' davits, she became 'inconspicously larger' due to the modifications that were made AFTER construction had already begun on the Britannic (30th November 1911) several months before Titanic sank
its SUCH A lovely Video
im so intrested in the ships by white star line
titanic is my favorite though but i like this one to, its so upsetting that they both sunk, they are both together at the bottom of the ocean now x
Amazingly done wow I love this! :)
Thumbs wayyyy up!!!

beautiful.
once upon a decade, i watched this
Thank you and your class for the comment.
No. Britannic entered service as an ocean liner like Olympic and Titanic before her, but she was almost immediately commissioned as a hospital ship after entering service.
very good work
what the song playing in the background? many thanks!
Britannic was converted into a hospital ship because of the war. She never sailed as a luxury liner. She had more lifeboats because the rules changed after the loss of Titanic. Olympic was fitted with more lifeboats after the fact as well. Britannic lost thirty lives compared to Titanic's 1,517. In terms of length, you're wrong. Britannic was longer than Titanic by three inches.
Its very beautiful. I love the song but the sinking is very sad. I love this vidéo.
The video is excellent. the music is perfect. good choice.
there was 3 the same ships, RMS Olimpic build in 1910, the only one that didn't sunk, was taken out of service in 1935, and scrapped between 1935 & 1937; RMS Titanic build in 1911, sank by hitting the iceberg in 1912; and HMHS Britannic build in 1914, struck a mine 1916
I always thought Olympic was the first built because they were pulling parts off the Titanic to complete the Olympic, then when the Titanic went down, they put the Olympic out of service to retrofit new improvement parts to prevent it from sinking. The Britannic was the last one built with the double hull, taller bulkheads and a new lifeboat lowering system. Olympic was the only one that completed its service and was dismantled.
larger in only mass, physical dimensions were identical for all 3 of the Olympic-Class Ocean Liners, except for, in the case of the HMHS Britannic, she was slightly wider due to the design changes, post-titanic event
it was 3 miles away from shore when it sank if you stood on the shore you can literally see britannic sinking. her captain tried to beach her as he saw the kea shores but britannic started to list or otherwise leaning to one side badly as it desperately tried to turn and go forward cause of the water coming in so he gave up and ordered evacuation.
Poor Britannic. This brings a tear to my eye. She never got a change. She didn't deserve such a life, and such an end.
yes, im saying that her internal layout was never change, she was repainted white, with a green stripe and red cross, but she wasn't internally refitted
The Olympic was scrapped down in 1935 alongside with Mauretania.
Titanic, Britannic, & Lusitania sank in 1910s.
Titanic collided with an iceberg, and Britannic & Lusitania both sank due to a torpedo.
Aquitania survived until 1950.
@CallumCraft75 - Uhm.. Yeah, your right, all the White Star Liners are cursed.. :D
Yeah, the Lusitania was sunk by a sub right? I haven't read about it for a wile so my memory is dim. Empress Of Ireland, anyone heard of that one? A ship to ship collision, same happend to the Andrea Doria. Someone refresh my memory.
Great video, RIP Britannic and ones who lost their lives on it.
Thanks for video
excelente vídeo, no pensé que se hubiera undido de costado, me gusta mucho las historias de estos tres grandes barcos de la white star
magnetic mine in that channel. Those mines were laid by a German U-boat about 1 month to two weeks prior. There was no intent to actually sink a neutral ship though it was flying the British ensign. She was supposed to be mor luxurious than both of her sisters. From the Treaty of Versailles the White Star Line gained war reparations for her in the form of the Worlds Largest Liner from Germany's Hamburg Amerika Line, the SS Bismarck renamed in 1922 to the RMS Majestic. The line also gained
what was the temp of the water when it sunk
"That's a BIG ass..." XD Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
very good!!!
another German liner from Norddeutscher Lloyd. The SS "Columbus" of 1916, became the RMS Homeric and first sailed in 1919 with White Star Line. This ship was an after thought and replaced the Titanic. However the Homeric was smaller at 656' and 22,000 tonsand with two propellers. She is sid to be the steadiest liner ever built to this day; even before stablizers.
YOU WERE ON THE BRITANNIC?!?
Wow! That's cool!
haunting...
Since the Britannic sunk 4 years after the Titanic, she's probably in a more good shape and condition than the titanic. We can raise her and rebuild parts of her that fall off. We can look at blueprints, 3D models, etc for areas that fall off if we raise her to rebuild.
LMAO looking back at this a decade later.
It is rather sad seeing her bigger little sister not getting much attention.
beautiful ship.
how do u put videos on youtube ??
Thank you. I noticed that the screencap was one of the few scenes I put in there from the movie and I was kind of worried that it would be misleading.
Do you mean the difference between the way the ship looks? I think the first image was digitally made a few years back based on the original description from the original Cousteau dives (when they first discovered the wreck). Whereas the 2nd image has been made from a more recent and more accurate survey.
the Britannic sank 10 miles off of a greece island. The Lusitania sank on day 5 of her voyage 11 miles off of ireland and sank in 18 minutes.
with the titanic, they actually handicapped themselves while trying to avoid the iceberg. the captain gave the order to reverse the engines, in a hope of stopping before the iceberg. with the engines reversed, however, the ships turning ability was greatly restricted, and as a result they hit the iceberg. had the ship continued ahead at full tilt, it might just have been able to avoid the iceberg
And which parts are you referring to?
@demian14444, The third one was the RMS Olympic, The Olympic was also the first one built of the three, second came the Titanic and third the Brittanic. The Olympic served in ww1 as a troopship, after the war she continued as a passenger ship. She was sold and demolished in 1935 after a succesfull career.
