Worse scenario is a flock of dock birds all yelling different direction as you try to work the problem.
Thanks for this! Wish I had watched this before last weekend! hahah Just got a bigger boat and the big difference is how much more the wind effects it, even at anchor. I was out just practicing handling the boat in the wind on only my 2nd time piloting this "new" boat and I was so nervous coming back into dock that I totally screwed up my approach and parked in the slip next to mine and had to redo the whole damn thing.
I had my brother and a couple of friends out on a 30ft twin screw recently. I was docking stern to with a slight cross wind and against the tide. Got blown off which is fine I was just going to have another approach but last minute they all panicked and started moving about blocking my view and moving the boat quite a bit in the water. Asked them calmly to stay still and got it on the next attempt but should have been clearer with them from the get go.
I drive boats daily and i will say he is a pro. I work at a marina so i see alot of boats approaching our docks

Another common mistake i ve seen is not having the steering in the right position justo before applying rhe power !!! FWD or reverse .....
Bow in the wind. OK. But what if you have to dock the other way, like when I get fuel? Port side has to be docked, whatever the wind.

That’s still pretty poor….
You’d have been far better off restarting your approach from six boat lengths out. If you’ve cocked it up, then admit it to yourself and start again with the correct approach and you can hit it in a oner, not the jiggling backwards and forwards as you demonstrated…..
