  • Bullseye Farms in Woodland kindly let us borrow one of their veteran pruners to talk through the steps of scaffold selection and training during the first dormant season of an almond tree.
The training style demonstrated here is Standard Pruning: 3-4 scaffolds, headed at 3-4 feet with all small side branches removed.
In some orchards, it may be appropriate to select up to 5-6 scaffolds. This style is becoming increasingly common.
    Recorded in January, 2017.

For general the people can copy the prune in the vid.remember it´s a farm.If u like in home a more natural shape or the tree is allready an old u can prune in different ways! Dont forget that a wound sealing ( charcoal powder or beeswaxs)is eventually important! On the farm the trees grow with prunes all the year and remembering this.if you cut your almond the first time, make sure u dont damage him. Thanks for the vid and greetings from spain

This is little bit of extreme, but I think his point is to prune for best fruiting and ease of picking, not necessary for the shape.

Shape is important as well. Keeping the center open allows better ventilation and less moisture to remain

You need to leave some leaves or it will die … this tree will likely now die. I learned this lesson the hard way … with a clematis I loved & was 10 years old … all research said you can’t kill them by chopping right back … you can & I did.
