The biggest tip for people to remember when installing a freeze proof faucet is to make sure they are installed with a slope. The spigot should be lower than the back connection. The slope allows any water left inside, when cut off, to easily drain out. If you fail to do this, you create a trap that allows water to stay inside the faucet when turned off and in turn freeze.
RE:Question Everything. All true, except, Murphy's Law states "A freeze-proof, idiot-proof sillcock will freeze when some idiot forgets to unhook the hose".
I want to add, you make this stuff look easy, I get told that a lot, and I appreciate the fact that you caulked the boards that you removed. Those little things are what set you and I apart from those other guys, it's also why everyone keeps calling us back.
So if that were a brick exterior (solid brick, not the brick slices), would you have to break the brick out, repair the faucet, and replace the brick with a new one (or several)? I would love to see that. It would be a lot of work, but possibly doable……? Sometimes there isn’t access behind the wall and in my case, the faucet is mounted snug up against the brick so I can’t tell if it’s a screw-on or soldered (house built in 1965 and faucet looked like it may be original).
First comment was before I made it to the end. I have to say that it is difficult to find people who actually care about their work. It's amazing that you went out of your way to paint everything back to match. Highly appreciated even though it wasn't my house.
Two Things: 1)In my time in the HVAC field, clients like to hear you whistle. It means you’re happy and confident. 2) what’s your go to song when you whistle.
Dude, checking and replacing the o-ring in the garden hose is serious attention to detail. I don't know many others that would even check it, much less change it.
thats normal practice because after repair is made. before hooking hose bib back we always check to make sure o ring is seated and good condition and if not its always replaced
I just discovered our hose pipe busted over the winter and I've been trying to decide if I'm able to do this myself. This video just gave me some confidence. Thank you for this!
Thanks for posting and sharing this! About to change mine out and I’m always checking your channel to see if you have a video on how to do it. You make me want to be a handyman, brother. Thanks !
Love the fact not only did you fix the problem but you also hooked the hose back up with a new rubber washer. That’s the attention to detail that everyone loves and why you are always busy. Going to hurt a lot of people’s heart when you do retire.
good job and good on you...I remember you fixing a drain in a wall a plumber failed on and your policy stated was no longer fool with any repairs of pipes under water pressure. good you pick & choose.
So i know this is the traditional way but after having 2 of the backs fail on me right at the valve because the solder on the brass part failed. So i just sweat a 1/2 to 3/4 male adapter on the supply then screw the bib in. If you suck at soldering they also make a sharkbite1/2 to 3/4 male adapter just make sure you screw the bib down.
Handyman! I gotta ask, I bought my super secret, OG, Gotta Buy It To Know What It Means, T-Shirt! The anticipation is killing me and it seems like forever since I have been waiting for its arrival!!! I don't really wear hats, but I am thinning up top, so I probably should start, I got sunburned last week O.o ... Can't Wait to be part of the club!!!
It might be worth mentioning why this happened, I understand kinda why you didn't(job security). This happens when you do not remove your garden/water hose. When you turn the water off with the hose on, water can not drain properly from the water hydrant, causing the water to freeze and bust the pipe.
Hey man thanks for this..! I actually have to go look at one of these tmoro, well tday it is now.. the lady said only leaking when turned on nd i was like wtf...? Now i know, awesome job nd thanks again!!
It will usually leak when turned on due to the “plunger” or seat being upstream of the copper split. You will have no complaints until the weather warms up and they use the water for the first time and they notice the leak.
Can I just replace the entire assembly? Or must I take the same steps as you have? Just discovered what appears to be a freeze break in my spigot water line
Interesting. So your replacement valve was threaded, but you soldered it. We don't have this at all in California... at least in my little world. Why the threads? Is it just set up to be installed in two different situations?
Our faucet is leaking, its in the garage that was added on and the piping to the faucet is under the house pretty close to the crawlspace. I am a new home owner and I dont know where the shut off valve is for the water. The was built in 1971 and garage added later live in Heber Springs area Arkansas
I’m not sure if you mentioned it in this or the previous video, but is the reason the faucet froze was because the homeowner did not remove the hose before winter and the faucet could not self-drain the water between the inside and outside the house?
Is that new spigot from HD? I installed the same exact one and it worked fine the first summer 2021. Winter came and went and the rubber bonnet was completely shot by spring. Pulled it out and luckily HD was kind enough to warranty it and gave me a brand new one last season 2022. I was extra careful not to over tighten open and close. Made it through the summer of 2022 without an issue. It's spring of 2023 now and I just turned on the spigot after a long winter. Turns out the whole rubber bonnet, spring and gasket has popped off and is stuck inside now. This will be my 3rd time fixing it. Very cheaply made imo.
My only advice would be to get a dehumidifier in there even if it's the homeowners. Then you can close the wet area in and the air movement with the dehumidification will pull the moisturizer out of the wood and spaces.
Have you tried using map gas(yellow bottle) to sweat pipe? It heats a lot faster than propane so you don’t get too much radiant heat throughout the pipe.
I was hoping to see a way of preventing this disaster leak in the future. Just brainstorming some kind of water catch or alarm. If the home owner did it once, he/she is likely to make the same mistake twice. At least the carpet problem has been removed. Thanks!

I love watching how you go the extra mile for folks. It helps me know what I should consider quality service from folks.

“I pity the fool that don’t know that tune!” Nice job Handyman!
Do you charge the homeowner for the whole roll of insulation and use the remaining roll on other jobs?
Swharf13 you make a rough estimate of material used on the job so no not on the whole roll but only a portion
I just discovered our hose pipe busted over the winter and I've been trying to decide if I'm able to do this myself. This video just gave me some confidence. Thank you for this!
Same. Just bought a home, after watering my lawn I discovered a flooded basement. Narrowed it down to the burst pipe
I love it when a Handyman plan comes together.
That's my song!! Subscribed...
Another great video HM! Thank you for making these!

Wow so professional 👌 that's why they call the handyman and not a plumber.
Knipex pliers are a must have...or so I’ve heard🤷♂️
I really like my Knipex diagonal cutters. Haven't tried their adjustable pliars.
good video you make the complex look so simple my man
Thank you sir for the uploads.
Another stellar video, Handyman!! 👍

Whistlin through another informative video mr handyman 👍
Sometimes it is the little stuff you do that goes above and beyond, for example, replacing the old o-ring for the water hose. Awesome vids, thanks!
good job and good on you...I remember you fixing a drain in a wall a plumber failed on and your policy stated was no longer fool with any repairs of pipes under water pressure. good you pick & choose.
Will buy some merchandise but need more color options, gray, sky blue, black, green ect ect. Thanks for your videos Handyman 😊 👋
Thanks for sharing, Handy.

Love the bottle of almost finished liquor in the background

James 95 LOL it was a TV show long before the movie. 🤣But the movie was good too. 👍

Nice job. I would have a extinguisher around when using a torch around wood.
And, or a water spray bottle

What is the brand manufacturer and model number of the watch you wore in the broken spigot/busted pipe video. Thanks for good instructive content.
In the U.K. we use specific pipe insulation to protect pipes and rock wool or foam insulation for thermal efficiency.
It might be worth mentioning why this happened, I understand kinda why you didn't(job security). This happens when you do not remove your garden/water hose. Cant even whistle on tune talking about turning in the man card @ 12:00 ( i laughed and had to actually listen thank you for the content)
I was looking at the electrical near the end on the video is the EMT conduit outside? Should be rigid or PVC conduit
You can run EMT outside, just have to use raintight couplings and connectors.
Hey man thanks for this..! I actually have to go look at one of these tmoro, well tday it is now.. the lady said only leaking when turned on nd i was like wtf...? Now i know, awesome job nd thanks again!!
I'm glad my video helped. I see this a lot every spring.

I love your videos 🤷♂️ just saying

Wow. Is that EMT running on the outside?
Very tidy job

RE:Piping California. Yes, gives you a choice of two ways to install it. In Michigan it is sold at Lowes and Home Depot and many other stores.
1st thought when i saw thumbnail was, flex tape??😜😂😂😂😂
That liquor bottle ready to be mixed with that coke lol
Great content again handyman
Caulking and overkill in the same sentence? you havent seen many Matt Risinger videos.. 😁
That's why I said goodbye to copper MANY years ago. Almost burned the house down. LOL!
The A-Team!!
Nice, but... Why not switch to a freeze resistant piping like Uponor AquaPEX?
I just put jb weld water something on my freeze break a couple years ago haha
I like the bottle, next to the coke...
"I love it when a plan comes together"
You're freaked amazing

Breathing awfully hard there big dawg! Must have been running between shots lol
LOL it is the new mic that right up at my mouth. I have another one coming in the mail
Just ordered my hat.
I’m not sure if you mentioned it in this or the previous video, but is the reason the faucet froze was because the homeowner did not remove the hose before winter and the faucet could not self-drain the water between the inside and outside the house?
Yes this was thoroughly covered a few times in the first part. Hose was left hooked up during freezing conditions.

fun watch before go to bed now i get a good dream LOL dreaming i'm a pipe Master or something XD

Just found out I need to do the same repair.
Have you tried using map gas(yellow bottle) to sweat pipe? It heats a lot faster than propane so you don’t get too much radiant heat throughout the pipe.
Yes I use it all the time.
I like to repair a pipe like a handyman
I'll bet it froze because the hose was still attached when it got cold out.
Does the fiberglass not bother your hands ?
Good video.
Most female hose connectors have a washer instead of an O-ring in them.
Homeowners Need To Remove Garden Hose From Water Faucet During Winter. So Any Water Can Drain Out...
I perceive you are a watch guy. Is that a seiko diver in this video? And is that a real sub I see you wearing a lot?
I do the same thing on the o rings, I can’t stand water squirting when I use the hose at a customers house.
you Really getting that beard going lol
5:02 I keep a yoga mat in my truck for rock/mud hot concrete situations $10-15 at Wally-world.
Just bought a house with this problem. Luckily we caught it before there was flooding!
I already have one on the schedule for next spring. It is very common.
I was hoping to see a way of preventing this disaster leak in the future. Just brainstorming some kind of water catch or alarm. If the home owner did it once, he/she is likely to make the same mistake twice. At least the carpet problem has been removed. Thanks!
Disconnect your hose, that is all.
Why not add a valve in between the spigot and line?
I'd love to see the results of a sealcock google search.
Can you give an update on the food truck you saved? Can't recall the name of the series right now, but team leader smoked stogies.
They sold the food truck.
Are these faucets used up north? I've never seen one of these.
You’ve never seen a spigot before?
Whats your background ? A carpenter i assume?
