    this Mig welding test is used mostly as a preparation for pipe welding. The settings that you get dialed in for plate will also translate just fine over to pipe welding. Downhill root and uphill fill and cap is pretty common for pipe shops.

    I also noticed at the very top of the plate that it gets almost too hot and the puddle recedes and draws the plate metal creating a divit per se at the very top. This is a problem I've had welding plate GMAW or smaw in the past. how can you prevent this while having well enough amperage to get good penetration but without causing that? Maybe sacrifice a solid bead for a tie in mid section hit it colder on the final segment? What do you say?

    an alternative to a root with more penetration using a tighter gap like that would be to crank the voltage up to 18-19 volts & turn down your wire speed! like 18.5/180-190. was tricky learning that the longer i can keep the puddle molten, the more wire i can feed into it before it sets. when i started i just tried to turn it down & throw as much wire in there as i could do long as the machine ran well & what you start to realize is the roots sets faster the colder you go & the increased wire speed only fills the gap faster so it doesn’t necessarily give you time to break down the walls & let the puddle soak up any wire.

    great video Jody. I do have 3 questions for you tho.
    on a plate test like that, is going down-hill acceptable only in open root? in school they only allowed us to go uphill on the 3G plate test, but that's with a backing plate, not open root. can up-hill be done 3G open root?
    and grinding... when you want to grind a weld for aesthetics or looks what's the rule or proper way of doing that? I have ground down some welds for looks before, but only ended up weakening the weld and having it break loose or fail.
    thanks in advance

    Jody, I'm getting ready to weld up side strips that go around the perimeter of a table top. It's aluminum, and I'm not sure how to approach this thing in terms of avoiding distortion. I want the table to be flat when I'm done, but will be welding this strip all the way around the perimeter. It may not be a problem, but it sounds like a recipe for distortion. I've got ideas as to how to keep distortion down, but I'm curious if you have any general ideas on how to approach this thing. I watched your video on distortion, but don't know how that would apply to what I'm doing.
    After all of these years I have to thank you for the zillions of excellent videos you've made.

    Hi Jody; Going back to your Stick Welding Tips Vertical 7018, you said some testers were not allowing weaving because of too much heat input causing grain growth failure, how does it or will it apply to the weave when doing a mig vert. up, like in this video. It seems to have similar heat input to the work and if it causes a problem with stick welding, why wouldn't it cause a problem in mig welding also?Thanks again for your videos, your channel is great.

    Welds look good. Some diffrences in what you are showing and what I was taught in the boilermakers apprenticeship no down hill all verts and that also includes root pass. Most of the time we are allowed a backing plate but sometimes they want it to be an open joint. Caps are done in 3 passes. One in the center and then one on each side.

    • @iw63boomer
      @iw63boomer Před 7 lety

      Not at all. A lot depends on the thickness of material, process, gas mix (if applicable), and ultimately, what does the WPS say. Up hill is a structural weld. Manufacturing uses a lot of down hand, some kind of wire feed process; usually with a spray transfer which allows the welder to use higher voltage and wire speed. Learn both, but if you have the uphill in control, the down hand should come to you without too much effort. But put some practice in on down hand, in case you run across a WPS that calls for it.

      is this even possible ?!!! I was searching for videos doing uphill mig on rootpass but it's sooooo rare ! why is that ?? I heard that downhill is avoided because the lack of fusion and inproper penetration, but since it's an OPEN root I can't see why ??, without mentioning that you increase the risk of shooting the wire through and thus you loose the arc, I think it's more difficult.
