In my opinion, this is Stallone's best role. He actually can act! Who'd of thunk it?. Seriously, he was absolutely brilliant here and should've been recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures for his performance.
@@wangson Agreed 100%, his best role by far. He always could act, he just grew comfortable with the paychecks and forgot his passion. When many thought he lost it he found it again and woke up and had this truly great performance. And I do mean great. He just had awful timing.. 1997 was an insanely busy and full year for performances and he got ignored. Yeah. This movie shows a true story of how police become corrupt. Force them to live in areas (the city) that cost more than they can best live and work and they’ll find ways to make up for it.
The voice over at the beginning and end is Harrison Ford in Blade Runner tier. I'm guessing that was Weinstein's doing, to make it obvious for the audience.

It’s not just with NYC. Cops (especially American cops) don’t like to live amongst the people they police, and so they settle in these suburbs like 45 min to an hour and half away from where they work. Another good example that comes to mind is with LAPD cops in Simi Valley (where Ronald Reagan’s presidential library is). These areas tend to be heavily white btw. They like the seclusion, sense of security (cities are always more dangerous in any country), and being around like minded people. It’s sort of a double-edged sword for the communities and officers.
@@jimmyjones9775 Like minded, more like law abiding respectful people. Also you are a racist since you brought up skin color where they tend to live, why should that matter unless you believe there is a difference between races?
chuck woolry You’re right. It shouldn’t matter. But historically, for many “whites” it has mattered, hence why they settle in places like Simi Valley so they can “be amongst their own”(they don’t consider the rest of Americans their own).
Mate, simple answer. WHITE AMERICAN police officers like to congregate amongst their own. This tribalism mentality breeds the kind of vitriolic disconnect you've seen over the years extending into today. They feel they're superior to the non whites they police. In their minds they view non whites as inferior, in par with an animal, this in spite of the fact that EVERY ethnic group has bad apples and the majority are solid, decent, hardworking citizens who obey the law. But for them they NEED to have some sense of superior presumptive status hence their attitudes in how they approach non whites which has been statistically proven recently by the DOJ. Even in this MASTERPIECE of cinema 🎥 ( I have not seen one single movie in all my years of movie going that boasts such an all star cast of legitimate acting heavyweights) you see the bigotry in one scene directed towards the Puerto Rican girlfriend of Liotta.
Terrible voice over -- unnecessary. We will be able to figure all that out without it. A movie like "Goodfellas" needs the voice over... this was a lame attempt using it.
saw the movie in cinema, still very underrated....great acting performances, almost half of sopranos crew involved 👍

Underrated. The score is on par as well. 👍
Still one of my favourite movie openings of all time. Sets the scene perfectly.
2:46 Great psychoanalysis moment by the pinball machine to Freddy: "You have no authority. You have no authority."
I know! Brilliant writing...it's so underrated as movie
Somewhere between goodfellas and the sopranos this happened
Seems like a very good assumption
The casting of both is 98% intertwined and came out at the same time.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I was trying to think of a way to describe this movie to people who never heard of it. Gonna go with that!
I think this came out the same year sopranos started
Nice view of the big apple from the other side of the GWB
Fun fact.
The pinball machine Freddie is playing was released in 1992 by Data East and is leathal weapon 3 machine.
Miramax international did great by picking this movie up. The movie itself is so underrated. Top notch acting on all ends.
Freddy was drunk and playing pinball but still was able to clock Carmella slipping Figgsy the bag. Freddy was actually a good cop.
