    I would encourage anyone who lives in the country, on a dirt road to start a flower farm business. We are in this extact situation ( not a flower farm, but an ag business) and if you market your product they'll come and find you. People LOVE to come into the country. Yes, our dirt road gets full of pot holes, cars get filthy when it rains, but it doesn't hurt our business. Our customers are very loyal.

      Yes, but do your neighbors hate you for it? 😅Our road is so quiet and our neighbors love that, so I’m worried that bringing extra traffic will cause distress.

    Thank you so much! This totally transformed my flower stand mentality. I am about to start this year and was thinking of putting out maybe 4 at a time but now I see the value of making their visit a fun and memorable experience, not just what is most practical for me. I still won't have the capacity to have 15 out at a time but now I have dreams for making my flower stand a beautiful presentation and not just a few bouquets on a coffee table!

    We just got done with our first year road stand. I have big plans of going from one acre to three of zinnias. We have been doing flowers for 3 years just for the view off our back porch and the stand was just a fun idea. We did a “take what you want, leave what you can” sign and did about 2-5 bouquets per day (ran it every day) I really like the one day approach to drive a sense of urgency and streamlining the bouquet process. I was always putting out new ones each day and leaving them out overnight each day. What Facebook groups are you referencing?? Great tips!

    Great video! In terms of your payment ipad, do you lock your ipad or stand to your cart? Last year we had a fair amount of theft at our stand, so we installed a camera and that pretty much took care of it. But I’d be a bit hesitant to put an ipad and square stand out there (even with a camera) due to our issues in the past.

    • @CoramDeoFarm
      @CoramDeoFarm  Před 5 měsíci +5

      The iPad is in a holder that is locked together and that is locked to the stand so unless they saw it off its going anywhere. But also we are around a lot during our stand days and aren’t open all day so theft is very low

It’s unfortunate because I’m in one of the biggest county’s in America. My flowers are fresh, beyond organic and not imported. Most people prefer the cheaper option and the convenience of just handing $10 out the window at an intersection than stopping for me. Even with marketing people prefer the cheaper options.

    Thanks for sharing your insights here. I'm not a flower farmer but like to watch flower farming videos and listen to podcasts because it helps with the cut flower selection and production in my own home garden. (I get it--flower farmers are tired of harvesting annual scabiosa and cosmos, but I can do it as I'm not a flower farmer. :) ). I do a seedling sale every year to offset the costs of my seed-buying addiction and that has done quite well. I agree that social media (Facebook, Instagram) is the way to go. I simply post in our local area groups when I have a seedling sale coming up. I've been doing this for a few years, so now I have repeat customers who've also wanted to be on an email list. I'm a big fan of email marketing, although I probably only send people 3-4 emails per year, providing links to my blog, news of what I'm doing (hosting workshops, seedling sale), etc. I'm a PR & marketing exec, so my whole life is publicity, content strategy, SEO, etc. When I started my garden blog, I refused to even attach SEO keywords, because I didn't want to be beholden to the market on anything related to my writing, creativity and art. That said, no one would know about the seedling sale if I didn't post a bit on social media. Anyway, thanks a bunch for this. You've got me thinking.

      @@CoramDeoFarm I'm imagining you sitting there thinking, "Sure, Girl, you go have fun with your cosmos with a harvesting rate of one tiny stem per 10 minutes" lol! Also thanks for the interview with Jenny. Between the two videos I'm inspired to spruce up the area where I sell seedlings. I used to do it down by the horses, which was nice but not big enough. So I switched to part of the driveway, which works quite well. I'm just going to put the horses up near the driveway on seedling sale days (there's an empty pasture there) so people can still pet ponies and then plant some more pretty perennials there too. A lot is perennial here in San Diego/Zone 10a and I don't mind sprucing up more of the property for a sale that happens maybe three times a year (I've been training my customers too to only come on certain days.) Thanks again!
