I did this technique years ago in my teenagers room. I added a small amount of water to the glue and used cheap foam brushes to paint the glue on the floor in small sections. Then I laid the torn paper on top and coated the edges with more glue to seal them flat. I used shoe polish to paint the brown color on the dried paper then sealed it with polyurethane. I came out with a similar result and it was surprisingly durable. Butcher paper also works in the place of paper bags. Ah !! memories.

If you mix sand in your final coat it will make it non skid but it will dull the reflection of it somewhat

PNW Granny your paperbag flooring, - how many years has it been down now, and what does it look like now. If it has gone down hill, how many good years did you get? cathy

I did it in my teenage daughter's bedroom so it didn't get a lot of wear, but it lasted at least until she left home. I no longer live in that house so I don't know if it is still there, but it was pretty sturdy. BTW my teen is now a grandmother so it was quite a while ago.

I love the fact that you are fearless when trying new things for renovation projects. You did a great job. I've been working with paper-skin, for over 30 years and it's incredible the things you can make and sculpt with it. If you want to re-do a table to look like leather, soak your paper bags for a few minutes in hot water, wring out the paper and hang it to dry. Then tear the dried paper into different size pieces and dip each piece into a glue and water mixture, 1/2 and 1/2 or less water, (whatever is your preference) then smooth onto the table surface etc. You don't have to stain it if you don't want to, but you can. Many coats of poly varathane or your favourite sealer.

I remember an article in a decorating magazine in the 1980's where this was done. I've also seen it used on walls. They used larger pieces and wadded them up, then flattened them for added texture. It looked like leather.

Another awesome DIY project. Interested to see how it wears, please update us. If the base of the stairs wears poorly, you could always use broken tiles as a mosaic with grout. The back face of the stairs would look awesome with the mixed media of the mosaic on the horizontal portion. Cheers to another great video.

Maybe a multi purpose flooring glue and spreading it on the floor first with a trowel, then you have only to press paper into glue. multi purpose has a nice open air time to be able to work with.

  • @stevebez01

+Steve Beswick I was thinking that while I watched this. And if you used the same liquid glass type finish as she used on the kitchen counter top with a little sand on top it would wear well too. Just need to let the the liquid glass cure a little before adding sand.
