I've been living in Kuwait as an expat for a month now (a whole month!) and I thought it was time for me to share my first impressions of Kuwait with you. It's kind of an expectations vs reality Kuwait edition. Moving to a new country is crazy and I've learned so much in the last few weeks, including these things about Kuwait and the Middle East.

    PLEASE READ ME!
This video has attracted a whole bunch of negativity, which I never would have expected. A lot of people got the impression that I was complaining about Kuwait or painting it in a negative light, which totally isn't the case. Other than the lack of at-home recycling, I don't consider any of the things I discussed to be positive or negative...they're just my neutral observations about some of the ways Kuwait is different to Wales. I said in the video that I'm really enjoying myself in Kuwait and that I definitely made the right decision when I chose to move here. That's 100% positive!
I think a lot of people watching this are people who've never watched my videos before and maybe don't get my dry sense of humour and the fact that I'm just a very loud and expressive person. They've mistaken it for ranting, which I assure you isn't the case. This is just the way I speak 😂
I apologise to those of you who got the wrong impression of me. Please note that I'm not replying to anymore negative comments on this video or trying to defend myself for talking about my experiences. Just know that I wasn't being negative and didn't mean to offend anyone.

Unfortunately, that was so negative. Clearly, you don't know Kuwait yet and your first impression is inaccurate! It's a privilege to live in Kuwait. You have the choice and freedom to do as you wish, dress as you wish, and be as environmentally mindful as you wish. Kuwait is one of the fastest developing countries ever! Healthcare and medications are for free. Education is for free. University is free! There are NO taxes to pay. You can even invest and establish businesses as a foreigner without additional expenses! People are nice and kind and respectful. Living is inexpensive. We have no poverty. Gas is cheap! Everything is within reach. Food is the best here! If you save 4 5 fils, you can buy bread that will last you days! If 5 fils doesnt mean much to you, it may mean much to others. It's equivalent to your 5 cents but more worthy.

Oh no! I'm so sorry if you got the wrong impression because I love living here. As I said, moving here was the best decision I could ha e made and I'm having a wonderful time. Apart from the lack of recycling (which bums me out about quite a few of the countries I've visited) none of the things I mentioned were criticisms. I just wanted to talk about some of the ways Kuwait is different from the UK and those were the things that instantly sprung to mind. عبدالرحمن الطيب

Its unfortunate that some people seem to be offended by your video in the comments. I think its good to be open to other people's opinions about your country because theres things that every country can improve on.

i have been an expat in kuwait for almost 4 years.. i can say its not that bad living here.. not all people here are bad.. some of them are good.. for the traffic issue.. well basically it will arise during rush hour.. you know the time they need to go to work or school and the time they need to go home. when motorist get into the traffic light.. well i saw them stop i mean they follow the traffic rules as far as my observation is concern but still there are some motorist who drives like its their own road. the dress code is fine.. its up to you which dress you will wear that you think will not catch the attention of all the people around you and if you want to be respected. for the currency i also hate numbers and fractions.. but i dont have any trouble dealing with kuwaits money at all.. above all.. though kuwait is not a perfect country.. i am still thankful they are giving me opportunity to work and live here. thats all.. thank you.

Kuwait is one of the richest countries in the world. It's definitely hot here which makes sense because if its huge oil deposits underneath responsible for its oil-based economy. The most remarkable thing in kuwait is its astoundingly expensive currency kuwaiti dinar which is the highest in the world. Kuwait has the most dense population of millionares and billionares. Kuwaiti ideology is a sort of in the middle compared to most islamic countries: Not too conservative but definitely not liberal. My dear lovely british girl, the rules and law enforcements here are pretty simple but very effective. Nobody messes up or fuck up the kuwait laws. You will surely get what you deserve. Also, do not complicate yourself with how kuwait handles waste management. Do not worry about your trash because there are people here in charged of separation of biodegradable, non biodegradable, and recyclable items.

The plastic bags they offer you at grocery stores are biodegradable if it makes you feel any better.. Some have the label saying it, such as Mishrif CoOp.. Some don't.. But by law.. All CoOps are not allowed to use plastic bags.. Normal plastic is being systematically phased out and will be illegal to use in the near future.. Yes it is not the greenest friendly place on earth.. But during the past few years there has been a steady climb towards that.. I got involved with many organisations there that are pushing for environmental awareness.. I felt really good about it.. Knowing I'm making a difference at a place where people seem to just need some awareness.. Beach clean ups became a trendy thing thanks in part to a show I produced and presented on Kuwait TV.. I worked with some kids while filming, they started understanding what plastic does to the oceans.. These kids will never litter I can assure you of that.. People in Kuwait don't know any better.. They've been spoon fed, and don't even know what it's like to take their garbage out.. Let alone know what happens to it in landfills.. They don't know what pollution is.. Kuwait's second largest export after crude oil.. is.. PLASTIC.. So.. Don't be too shocked.. Just try to help even if it feels like you are not doing much.. The influence you leave anywhere in this world for a greener environment will trickle back to your home..
With that said.. Please let me know if you would like me to provide you with organisations or some amazing individuals that have dedicated their lives for a greener environment in Kuwait.. They would most certainly appreciate your effort to help..
Lastly, if I was in your position, 'I' would integrate the idea of recycling within your teaching somehow, make those around you understand why recycling is a good thing.. And of course never get upset at those who don't.. That would have a counter effect, I'm sure you know that.. Get students interested in the topic.. Make them love their environment.. Even if they think there is no nature in Kuwait.. You won't see the fruit of it any time soon.. But you can be sure in future generations this will make an impact you'll be proud of..
My contacts are mainly in Kuwaiti TV channels, since you're a native English speaker, I can have you contact some people in TV, it would be a paid part time job for you, where you can do the same vlog style videos, perhaps in the studio or at an outdoor location.. It would be a good idea for you to address ideas and motivational stories towards expat and English speaking communities in Kuwait which represent more than 75% of the population.. If TV is not your thing.. Those environmental organisations would give you a million options to choose from..
I rarely reply to a videos or write a comment 'essay' in response.. But seeing that you care about something I am equally passionate about.. This could be a win-win opportunity for you and Kuwait..
    Take care

I'm so glad to hear those bags are biodegradable because it's been driving me crazy looking at how many people go through! I'm also so glad to hear about the steps Kuwait has taken to become a 'greener' country. You're so right that it all starts with education. I mean, I can remember when the UK had no at home recycling and people were given a plastic bag for every item they bought. It's far from perfect now, but it's come a long way and I'm sure in time all countries will have a big push towards eco-friendly living. It's something I've always been passionate about promoting in my classroom and hopefully it sticks with the children I teach.
I would definitely love to get in contact with some organisations or contacts you have. Thanks for reaching out.

Any soon now I’ll be moving to Kuwait, and I’m very exited about it! I did not know they are so behind in recycling matters but hopefully I’ll be in charge of a place where I definitely will implement it if they haven’t yet!
So thank you so much Aimee for this video because it helped me to know more about the place I’m going and thanks to all the responses that boost me up even more to get to know the country itself as the Kuwaiti people.! The only disadvantage I've come across so far is that it's not as eco-friendly as I'm used to in the UK, but that's true of a lot of the other countries I've visited. I don't consider any of the other things to be disadvantages. They're just ways that Kuwait is different from the UK. I think there a lot of positive things about living here!

Secondly I agree with u that gas takes one or two days to bring to ur home I prefer to u to get it by yourself but about restaurant delivery they I don't agree with u that takes 3 hours because in law in Kuwait if they takes more than one hour u can take the food and don't pay( for free ) however I advise u to order from talabat or carige u can fine those apps in AppStore or google play ( its like Deliveroo or just eat in uk)
And finally if u don't happy with 5fils and 10fils and u don't know what u should do with it!! Please help me what should I do with 2p, 5p and 10p in uk? Because I'm studying in uk so I prefer to u to keep them in box in which money is collected or saved u will saved exactly same me😜

Hey Aimee, hope you’re enjoying your stay in Kuwait. What you’ve said about drivers is sadly true like we know that ourselves as Kuwaitis. As regards restaurants you can order through Talabat & Carriage, they’re similar to JustEat & Deliveroo in the UK. And all the other small differences you talked about I guess they’re normal for anyone who just moved to a new country, it’s a matter of time to get used to the place and how things work out. As a student abroad I experienced the exact same when I first moved to Ireland, in terms of public transportations, currency and the little unnecessary coins, and the tiny things that differ to what you’re used to back home. It’a all about adaptation and getting your head around the country. Enjoy your stay & don’t hesitate to ask for more information.
