Babylon 5: Signs and Portents Battle (new custom CGI)

- Recreating the battle Babylon 5's first season episode "Signs and Portents"
The initial idea was a 1:1 recreation but there were a couple of issues that bothered me, such as the station and planet moving around all over the place between shots.
In this take, I kept the station and Epsilon 3 in the same position relative to each other and extended the widescreen to give it a film look.
This was created using iClone 7.3. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
When I first watched this battle, I felt the Babylon 5 defense grid was severely underpowered; like it could take down fighter wings, but against capital ships it was hopelessly outmatched. It wasn't until the upgrades in Season 2 where it could handle a cap ship
Point is: starfuries could easily take care of capital ships, a single squadron with a small amount of shots caused a meltdown on a centauri warship
@@michelecastellotti9172 When B5 went up against the centauri warship they already had the upgrades to the defense grid in place. That happened earlier in season 2.
@@thegman1985 the station, but what i meant is that even if they didn't receive it, they still had higly mobile anti capital ship artillery in the form of the starfuries. Keep in mind that it was hose fighters who gave them an edge with that poweeful race they defeated before attempting to contact the minbari
I think the general idea was that the station was meant to be a diplomatic hub so it'd be considered off limits in war time. The situation with the Centuri and Narn got so bad that Earth decided it was prudent to upgrade the station's defenses, over Sheridan's own objections.
Which came back to bite Earth in the ass in Severed Dreams.
@@kyrozudesoya1829Well, to quote Sinclair - Never hand someone a weapon unless you know where they'll point it.
Glad to see B5 fans are still bringing it on! Great job on the cgi,, finally a decent jump point
That jump point was the hardest part of the video :D
@@DarthAngelus Indeed! I think it was too solid, though; you may be better off generating a smoke effect of some kind, instead of a physical object.
Otherwise, other than the framerate jitters, too much sharpness, lack of debris, and what I felt was a lack of firepower (B5 likely lacked it due to budgeting reasons), it was otherwise a remarkable effort!
I know it sounds like a lot of criticism, but trust me, I am really liking what you have. I felt that if you worked out those issues, you could make a channel out of this.
Who knows? Maybe the rights holders might ask you to remaster their series for them!
Great job with your work. Very enjoyable. On the strategy wise why didn’t they destroy the mothership that will trap the fighters then they can destroy at their leisure?
@@maven21 fighters were immidiate threat to the station. Besides there was a vip hostage on ship so they couldnt just blow it up
Shut the fuck up. You dingus.
And the questions still remains: If ONE person can produce a result this decent, why in the hell can't the rights holders do a proper remaster, with new CGI?
They’re cheap. Hollywood always is.
Because they're petty and they don't want to.
When Paramount remastered Star Trek TNG it cost millions of dollars because visual effects done on video had to be remade. The Star Trek TNG blu-rays were a bomb and that killed potential for more standard definition science fiction shows to get an HD remaster. There needs to be a chance for profit in order to put truck loads of money at risk for an expensive remaster.
@@jarjared3522 Well, CBS is why the TNG remastered set bombed so hard... the set was released right around the same time that CBS started suing fans, and then announced their idiotic fan film policies. This soured many fans, and they expressed their displeasure with their wallets. The TNG remaster LOOKS fantastic, and had CBS not been actively attacking the fanbase, i'm sure it would have sold VERY well.
@@numberyellow That doesn't change the fact that other studios with their 90s syndicated genre show looked at the numbers and figured an HD remaster is not worth it. They care about the numbers and bottom line. So there is no point in rationalising it.
At points the lighting felt off, but this is still a very good effort! Good job!
I was trying to copy the lighting of the original show and in season 1 the lighting was off in places too. I think I should have gone for what looks good now, rather than try to match the original.
i'm a huge fan of B5, and this episode and the battle is my all time fav. at times alittle dark, and sometimes alittle slow/sluggish, but a very good job (love the starfury models, with the art designs). i like you kept the original parts of the show mixed in with the cgi. i enjoyed watching that :)
Thankyou! The original battle was quite dark too so it was tricky to keep it lit well in some shots. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D
@@DarthAngelus any plans to do more ?
@@sllebfognir I've had requests to do the shot of the Raider ship being destroyed, which I'm thinking of doing but haven't had a chance yet. Other than that, not at the moment. It was really just practice for my own projects. Since you are a B5 fan, you might enjoy this: czcams.com/video/6Pm7tQ46g50/video.html
@@DarthAngelus ah ok, was thinking if you were doing more, as you have the starfury's and the raiders, you could do the fight in mightnight on the firing line . but also try the launch for the starfury (same episode) more unique launch in sicfi, just dropped out the doors, catapulted by the spin of the station ( czcams.com/video/jnnlnHQKk7I/video.html ) :)
Holy. Crap. This is amazing! It's like watching a new show! Hats off to you good Sir!
The station looks really good in this! Nice work
Thankyou! It's a really old model from way back when the series was still running :)
I like the idea here, but the CGI looks too much like a video game. I applaud the effort though.
If only it was possible to do this with all of the space battles for B5
This was an interesting experiment. Thanks for taking the time to do it!
Good effort. Keep it alive fella !
Thankyou! :)
This is great! Good work! The jumpoints and the station itself looked a little off to be honest but the ships were so perfectly done! Details shadows and all! Great job!
Oh B5... may you get refunded
I really liked this, thank you. I now wish I could watch the whole series in the same quality.
Me too :(
Simply amazing work!
Thankyou :)
Babylon 5 is seriously underrated came across this video by accident and to my surprise I’m very impressed on how you redesigned the CGI congratulations really liked it please keep it up welldone!💯💯💯👍👍👍🎩🎩🎩
Agreed on B5 being underrated. It's a show I grew up with and kinda feel like it had a strong influence on how I turned out. It doesn't get the love it deserves :(
Nice work!
It looks amazing, it like the fact it still retains the style of CGI from back then but it looks seriously upgraded. Hope that makes sense!
The action scenes though seem a bit stiff, as if the frame rate seems to be low when the scene pans around the ships. This could be because of CZcams though, the fans should go ahead and make a complete remaster!
Nicely done. Love the old school look 😎
If I'm reading the comments correctly and this is one person's work, it's amazing. With funding it could be spectacular. It's a bit too dark, still too slow and not quite matching the action sequence correctly, but it's close and certainly proves the principle. This was fantastic work.
i loved the new cg effects for the station and the jump point plus the jump gate and the fighters first rate :D good detail on everything
Thankyou! I can't take credit for the models, just animating the scenes, but I do appreciate the compliment :)
@@DarthAngelus could you do the scene where the raider base ship get blowen to pieces by the shadow ship with the new cg animation please ?
@@ShrekWallBee I'll have to experiment with the Shadow ship model I've got :)
Bloody great!!
I hope you have done more
I have mostly been focusing on Star Wars projects, but I'm kinda tempted to do another B5 one.
AWESOME!
This is a really good fight!
With how many of the cast we have lost over the years I would love to see the series remastered with more modern CGI. I don't think this is a series where a reboot could do it justice.
What about the idea of recreating actors' likenesses with technology like in Rogue One? Using leftover lines you could have Sinclair, Delenn, Garibaldi back sort of...
@@yonatan_max_art I don't know if I like that idea B5 meets Space Jam. I would be concerned with how it would turn out.
@@nickm9102 What? No, not like that... I mean realistic human graphics like they did in recreating Grand Admiral Tarkin. If they choose not to do this its' not the end of the world. If they did stories with the actors alive like in the Lost Tales... except better episodes.
@@yonatan_max_art i didn't mean animation type characters I'm referring to having people act opposite a green screen. I'm not sure they can find good actors to pull off the show.
B5 was a show ahead of its time. So do you use Amiga's for your graphics like B5 did back then? Now I want to go see if any network is showing old eps of B5
@@saberiandream316 No, it isn't that history repeats, it is that it likes to rhyme and people are more likely to learn the WRONG lessons...
Very nice!
Thankyou! :)
This was really nice! I so wish they was done to the whole show. I was a HD version of the show.
I wish there was an HD version of the show too :(
The title should be changed. I would add "(new custom CGI)" or something like that.
You're right, I'll change it.
With a little more adjusting, this would be just perfect if and when they decide to release this series on Blu-Ray.
I applaud you taking your time making these and respect it, but the old DVD CGI looks way better. Keep doing what you're doing thou.
I applaud the effort sir. This sort of effort needs to be recognized and appreciated. I know darkness cover up a multitude of sins, it is more difficult to see the objects. There is no point if you can't see the subject of the shot. Also, there is something off in the added CGI that I can't put my finger on it. Did the render cook long enough? While this is not a finished product, it is a fine second draft. Keep working on it and don't stop!
It always bugged me they put Garibaldi in a Star Fury...he's station security, not a pilot. It's the one thing WB tried to fix and JMS fought against, I think he was wrong in this case.
Security doesn’t end well inside the station it’s the entire station and a space around it that’s important
@@Howyaduing nah, not buying that. B5 had a wing of fighters that could patrol the space around the station and that was part of Ivanova's job. She was in charge of the space around the station, mostly in the commercial and passenger sense, but also security. You can tell from Garibaldi's office that he was in charge from the hull in.
@@shaggycan maybe he was a fighter before it became in charge of security maybe a personal request to the commander he wanted to be a pilot of a star fury
Faaaa is that so good, omg the jumpgate....f___
Well done
And here we are about to get a brand new Babylon 5 in 2023.
Very nice, though I'd turn down the bloom if you're aiming to capture the show's style - I think they only ever used bloom effects in one episode (the scene where the Vorlons and Shadows fight for the first time) and they never revisited that look.
Bloom was probably an expensive effect to produce way back when the show was being made.
My goal was to recreate the footage but also see what could be done to make it look better.
Why is this video so dark? I have to turn the brightness up to full!
Something to do with the way CZcams processed it :/
Good work. But I would suggest reducing the resolution of the CGI or adding film grain to it so it matches the live action more closely. That way it wouldn't be so different.
Most realistic space fighter ever designed.
Such a beautiful ship.
Great work, and this was fun to watch. You missed an opportunity here to have the raider fighters go out in a more realistic fashion vs. like a firecracker. And what's up with the fury cockpits lit yellow in some scenes? We need people like you to do this to the whole show, and get paid for it, were this somehow possible. Bonus points to get the original Foundation crew involved, too.
I was trying to recreate the shots as close as possible, thus the firecracker explosions. Next time I'd want to make it how it would appear if they made it now.
*☼ much better. nice work.*
Thankyou! :)
But but! The Raider carrier ship got away! There's no proper resolution to the fight! We need to see what happens to that ship in the end! :D
I’m a huge fan of B5, rewatch it at least once a year…. But I’ve never understood why some ships that can make their own jump points have to turn around to fly into them… particularly when they are trying to escape from a battle. Or do we just chalk it up to a plot device?
Good job, I have only one issue with the renderings: you're missing camera shutter
love what you did. wish you did a Shadow battlecrab
I kinda regret not adding that scene onto the very end :(
I like the attempt. The model redesign is nice but it looks more cartoonish. It doesn't unfortunately look like metal.
Cartoonish is a good way to put it. There's a lack of fluidity that really ends up being jarring. The old CGI is definitely low res and bad now, but it's fluid and especially if viewed in the intended 360p, fits well together.
It reminds me of the in game cutscenes in early 2000s or late 90s games. Nice effort, but ultimately less convincing than the shows they're seeking to emulate.
Something you'd expect out of a game trying to render resources still loading while the cutscene is playing but I'm not sure why it looks like that on a prerendered video.
Still, great effort. A little more polish and a re-render with some different settings maybe would fix that and make it much better.
@@compmanio36 I agree. Fortunately the software has come along way since then, so maybe I'll get around to rendering it again sometime and it would look better :)
I'd pay for this
Me too :)
So B5 is on a channel called comet. I wish it wasn't on 2 times a day everyday it fills the dvr so fast. Once a week would be perfect to also introduce my son to the show. No way he wants to watch 10 hrs a week.
That's annoying. No way to transfer the files from your dvr to your computer so he can watch it at his own pace?
I see that on all the time on Comet. They replay the series constantly so it's not like you can't record a few, then come back and record the next few the next time it plays through. Or just download them all like I did. Then you can watch them all as fast as you like.
Cool.
Thankyou :)
@@DarthAngelus You're welcome. Can you please do anymore recreated CGI Space Battles that I might have requests for?
@@jamieolberding7731 I'm afraid that the Heir to the Empire project is taking up all my free time. However, there will be plenty of space battles in that as we get further into the story :)
@@DarthAngelus Thank you, also what is this "Heir to the Empire" project about? Just out of curiosity.
@@jamieolberding7731 I am adapting the Star Wars novel, Heir to the Empire into animated videos, one Chapter at a time. Here's the first one and I've released upto Chapter 4 so far. czcams.com/video/dgRbUd9xil0/video.html
It certainly looks 'new' but not 'better'. It is a nice attempt but the scenes looks too sharp, too clean. The original has a slight blur to it, which helps.
It looked blurry because the original was closer 480p.
@@eddiek8179 That's the thing, it's about depth of field, there is always a bit of blending blurriness. When things look too sharp, it looks fake. Think of Battlestar Galactica and the Expanse. They are detailed, but they are never sharp, because everything in a distance have a blurriness to it.
@@biocapsule7311 That's not I was talking about. The original resolution is blurry when compared to this hence me mentioning 480p as an indicator of comparison. Just by going that alone, it's going to look sharper in comparison whether they added DOF, Distance Haze or any other elements to create realistic ENV effects or not.
I applaud the effort as well. The light in the Star Fury cockpit threw me a bit off. And I am not sure I like what you did with the colors in places. But, great job.
Glad to see fans at work, but new and custom doesn't mean better in this case.
Maybe not, but it was still a fun little project to do :)
lots more detail on the ships; good
You did a great job, it's an evidence of mastering CGI ... But something's wrong, it feels too much (mapping more than necessary I guess).
Maybe do I've to stop watching VHS version ;)
Excellent remaster.
Totally separate from this, but the tactics of the episode didn't make sense. Sinclair told Garibaldi to focus on the escaping ship, yet they end up tangling with the Raider fighters instead of pursuing.
And then instead of surprising the command ship with Alpha Flight, Sinclair uses them as well to box the raiders when he said he bound take care of them!
And why did he recalibrate the defense grid for long range when he ended up shooting them directly above the station? I'm going to assume the raiders could see this and he was leading them into getting to close range instead, thereby tricking them.
Otherwise, it implied he was going to take out the Capital ship. Really odd chain of events, unless someone has some insight.
And Sinclair > Sheridan.
Not a bad video at all, makes me wish Warner Brothers would pony up the money to do new CGI for the show so it could get a Blu-Ray release. Alas, they're run by idiots and bean-counters, as the DCEU demonstrates.
One issue though, the sound seems odd. Sinclair in particular sounds a little high-pitched.
Not sure why Sinclair sounds off, it's the same audio as the episode.
I still prefer the original, but really good effort!
Fair enough and thankyou :)
@@DarthAngelus So, which are you? The Master or the Apprentice? :)
It's a bit dark compared to the original, but not bad
The original was pretty dark too, but thankyou :)
They should hire you to remaster the series, drastically better than whats currently available.
That would be a lot of work, but fun to do :)
Original Voice in the wilderness VHS movie, DVD version?
Entil'Zha would like "War Without End Babylon Squared Redux"
Jump gate back wash 🤔
A series where obvious cgi is preferred, and is a part of the charm.
Screw the Galactica reboot for ruining scifi tv with it's slog of copycats.
Honestly it wasn’t as obvious when it first aired. The big problem with the current releases is that, as they didn’t have any HD renders and the files are long gone, they just took the original 480i effects and cropped them to widescreen.
@@AWriterWandering I heard about that on SfDebris reviews.
*when the fan-made CG is better than the professional CG*
I appreciate that, but it is quite easy to beat CGI that's 26 years old.
Sorry im sure it was a lot.of effort but i prefer the original one, the new textures are too crisp to appear real
The actor who played Morden played a very different character in the series pilot The Gathering.
Yeah, I remember when I watched The Gathering again after the show and he was there thinking "wait a minute..." :D
10/10 а теперь весь сериал сделать так!😅😅😅
Looks like a video game ill pass this is like when they did the old star trek cgi redu ill stick with the old stuff. It doesnt look this bad on dvd its youtube crap playback that makes things look much worse.
The original looks much better.
terrible tactics. take out the carrier, then mop up the fighters. geez, there's only the entire pacific theatre of WW2 to point to about this. i loved this show, but hollywood has to stop creating plot holes for the sake of the drama. it ruins both.
This isn't looking realistic. Some NPR renders would not help the look really. Nice experiment, surely a lot of work, but if you want it to look good, go for a photorealistic look, really.
The original are better.
Lol, this was awful.
It looks like a mobile phone game.
Aztec'ing is the lazy modeler's trap. It never looked good in Star Trek, it didn't look good in B5. It's just a cheap way to add meaningless detail and screws up the sense of scale.
Look at a real ship, look at the ISS, the space shuttle, a modern fighter jet, a navy destroyer. None of them are made of panels that look remotely like aztec texturing.
It was only done in B5 because they couldn't afford the poly counts for real detail. We're a fifth of the way into the 21st century. We have the poly budgets. B5 ships should be redone with real detail based on real engineering, not cheap texturing.
